Duquesne

The Dukes knocked off Albany in their first 2013 game by a score of 35 to 24 at home. Their RS Freshman QB, Dillon Buechel, threw for 309 yards and 2 TDs. This young man was an excellant HS QB in the Pittsburgh area. I thought for sure he would go FBS, but coaches were concerned with his weight. But make no mistake about it, he is the real deal. We will have to pressure him early and often to win this game. Duquesne also boasts Dorian Bell, a senior linebacker. This guy transferred from Ohio State during the Tressel debacle and has been stellar ever since for the Dukes. He was a preseason all-american. He can really wreak havoc with your offense if you let him.

We will have to play solid in all 3 phases of the game and eliminate our mistakes from the YSU game to win this game. I do believe the Flyers defeat the Dukes in a close game in our home opener!

DU has Some Players

In addition to a very good running back and linebacker transfer from The OSU, Dusquesne has other players garnering recognition...

Two Dukes Earn NEC Player of the Week Honors
Buechel co-Rookie POW and Martello co-Defensive POW
Sam Martello sparked the defense with a pair of big plays.

Sep 2, 2013

PITTSBURGH - Freshman quarterback Dillon Buechel (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and sophomore linebacker Sam Martello (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) were both honored by the Northeast Conference for their performance in Duquesne's 35-24 win over Albany on Saturday.

Buechel threw for 309 yards and a pair of touchdowns to earn co-Rookie of the Week honors. The first DU freshman to open the season under center since 2005, Buechel completed 21-of-28 passes without an interception. He threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Sean Brady and 29-yard TD strike to Gianni Carter in the span of a minute to turn a 16-10 halftime lead into a 29-10 advantage with 10:03 to go in the third quarter.

Buechel's 309 yards passing were the most by a DU freshman since Scott Knapp threw for 365 yards in a 23-12 win over Robert Morris in the 2005 opener.

Buechel is the first Duke to earn NEC Rookie of the Week honors since all-time leading rusher Larry McCoy was named three times in 2009.

Martello was named the league's co-Defensive Player of the Week on the strength of a pair of big plays. The 6-0, 209-pounder teamed with Aaron Reed to tackle UA's Kevin Chillis for a 13-yard loss and safety on the first play from scrimmage. In the third quarter, Martello sacked Albany's Will Fiacchi, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Dorian Bell. The play was followed by Buechel's pass to Carter. The Ohio native finished with 5 tackles (4 solo).

Duquesne (1-0), which is among others receiving votes in this week's Sports Network FCS Top 25, returns to action on Saturday at Dayton (0-1).

Good Game Coming Up

From DU fanboard...They have some confidence and they are a 0.5 point favorite on the road.

Way to start the season, Dukes! Next victim: Dayton! Sagarin makes the Dukes a 1/2 point favorite over the Flyers for the game on Saturday, Sept. 7th.

Sean Brady's one-handed TD catch was getting a lot of attention on the NEC's Overtime! Blog as the play of the week in the NEC: http://necovertime.wordpress.com/

High level QB gives you a chance to win. DU got 309 passing yards on Albany. We got less than that and two interceptions at YSU. If we do not improve here, it will be another long season.

First, I think that this will be another tough tight game. However, I think it sets up better for us than did YSU. YSU's strengths were our weaknesses so that game looked tough from the start but I thought our kids gave it their all. This game sets up a little better for us and here are my thoughts on the keys to the game for what its worth:

1. We need to put some pressure on the freshman QB and confuse him with coverage's. I think we have outstanding corners and if our safeties can ball hawk like they did at YSU and get some picks that will be big. YSU gave up the 5th fewest sacks in the country last year and we got them once. Hopefully, we get even more pressure on the Dukes this week.

2. I think the Dukes defense will be good enough that we won't be able to just pound the ball on them. While not as good of a front 7 as YSU their linebackers are still very good. We may be able to pop a few runs on them but I would not expect the run game to be consistent.

3. We need good QB play on offense and someone (or some ones) need to step up and make some plays. It will not be enough just to do your job you need to do something special. In our TD against YSU Will made a play. He scrambled and found 29 when the play broke down. We need more of that whether it is a receiver making a catch on a poorly thrown ball or a receiver or back breaking a big run. If you can't just out physical a team you need to make some plays and that is what we are going to need this week and in the tough games still to come. If we get that type of playmaking our defense will keep us in the game and this could be a very special season. If not, we will continue to lose a lot of close games and wonder what could have been.

In addition to what Pioneer mentions, we need to keep the INTENSITY of YSU game. We will need to bring this EVERY week if we want to contend for a PFL ring. I believe the men felt they could play with YSU unlike ISU last year. It took a half last year to realize the field is the same size, you get 4 downs to make another 4, and the score is kept the same way.
I do believe we need to substitute much better than last week. We started to wear down in some spots and we did not give them a rest. From my understanding, the coaches realized this mistake when watching film. Now if they correct it is another thing.

This comment caught my eye, (and I agree 100%):

"Bardo is average and will make mistakes.

Nothing on Bardo – he plays better than I would. That said, he is not a gifted passer. When made to be one-dimensional, he was exposed and picked off twice. The Dukes DBs could come away with paydirt. He will not perform as well as Albany’s Fiacchi when forced to pass and the Dukes MUST exploit this."

Oh Video, video, wherefort art thou?

Had troubles yesterday getting into the newly formatted site, Dayton Flyers .com; but today is fine.

What is not fine is that no free live video streaming of the game is listed. I swear it was listed weeks ago in an pre-season article. Checked the Duquesne site & the link there takes you right to video schedule for A-10 basketball.

Are we shutout on video Saturday? All season?

Are there any special tricks involved with getting to the sight?

Thank you and go Flyers!

It's up they see me I'm down

The site has been going on line and back down for the last two days. It was there yesterday evening. Now this morning it is gone. I was hoping that it is down so they can put the media guide on before half the season is over. The new site doesn't have a link for a media guide so who knows.

I answered my own question. Here is a link to Dayton Flyers Football Official Website...

http://www.daytonflyers.com/index.aspx?path=football

Gramps...

If you go to this webpage (Flyers Schedule)...

http://www.daytonflyers.com/schedule.aspx?path=football

and click on "Details" there is an option to "Watch". This should take you to the game at 1:00 on Saturday.

I hope this works and Go Flyers!!

Gramps, Go to daytonflyers.com Home page. Then click on Calendar. Scroll down to Saturday, September 7 and the video link is there. It will take you to the A-10 All Access site, but there is a link there for the UD-DU football game.

Fixed with hours to spare!

Me thinks the site was down for change, you know, before winter sports.

Thanks FlyerBUD & mitch, it's all different now from yesterday & the listing of A10 video events is different than this morning.

Nice to see things getting straightened out...especially B4 basketball practice starts! It's really something how these things happen. Like Rodney Dangerfield said, "I don't get no..." forget it. It is what it is.

Bring on those Pittsburgh behemoths!

Hey all you Flyer Fans, come on over to the Flyers Club Tailgate before the game. All the brats, metts, hot dogs, pop and beer you need before the game, at a very reasonable price. We are located behind the U. D. arena next to the orange barrier. Just look for our flag. Hope to see you all there. GO FLYERS!

Amazing, incredible...

5:40, 3rd possession, perfect time for an offensive change...but not yet.

Change will happen today before final gun!

oops! Dukes have bad snap, UD recovers. Bardo takes team in for a score on a 3-play, 1-yard drive for TD.

ye have little faith Gramps. Luke would not have made that play. This is why he is the qb. He may not be perfect but he is the better athlete. I know a lot of people won't agree with me but that's ok. i haven't heard Coach Kelley say that Will just completely missed someone yet.

Bardo has in fact made his normal complement of bad throws. Hunter has dropped two passes and made another bonhead return play. There have been so many outright terrible plays that I can't keep count. A true team meltdown so far.....

Half time...was that our good half or bad?

Losing 14-20 at half but it was an exciting, at times unexpected play by both teams.

Flashes of brillance for both units. The visitors uniform looks more like a Dayton team than the "reds". Cleveland Indian fans still talk about those all-red unis they had years ago. Same will happen to UD fans & the 2013 "reds".

Amazing that several times already I was reminded when our offense came from behind at Duquesne with a long scoring drive to go ahead with 1:26 to play in the game. We got the ball back with only :26 left & lost. Be on the watch & careful defense this second half!

Lets illiminate the fumbling, bumbling, no gain sneaks & defensive back goofs!

My dad often asked about the olde Cleveland Browns; "was that our good half or bad half"?

After weak KO, Dukes start moving via pass but Zach Elias forces fumble. UD ball.

We MUST be able to pass a little to win this game. Cannot run out the clock on the ground!

Let me be the first to say that the Flyers beat the Dukes, 23-20

The UD streaming video is still buffering, since 10:13 of the 2nd qtr.

Actually this was very encouraging. Mistakes on our part? Sure. But we did what we had trouble doing last year. That is finish off the game no matter what it takes. This win should be a confidence builder.

Since I live in the 'Burgh and was not able to attend today, I listened to the Dukes local radio feed. Their take was it was a sloppy game with strong defensive play on both sides. They thought the Dayton defensive front was in control the entire game. Were really lamenting the lack of a rushing attack by their Dukes. No matter which way you slice it, I think we were clearly the best team today and it was indicated in the final score! Bring on the Colonials!

Missed the second half, but a few observations, Great defense and special teams play, judging by the length of the last three FG, the offense has to finish with TD's when they get close, not a fan of the all red unies. Flyers look to be improved over last season. Video screwed up again this year. We could be a handful in league play.

UAC, Duquesne does offer scholarships but are not the full 63 like YSU. They are somewhere in the neighborhood of 30. I am certain they give out both full and partial scholarships. Since they are FCS, they are allowed to combine partial athletic with partial academic. That is not permissable at the FBS football level. Fulls only for FBS.

Coach Kelly commented on air that the Dukes award "35 full" scholarships for football.

Great experience at the game today. Where else can you get a $3 tailgate, free parkin AND great football?

New unies....

The Flyers have new uniforms....featuring red pants for what, I believe, may be the first time.

Lots and lots of red....very little blue.

How'd they look to those that had the pleasure of seeing them first hand at Welcome?

(I will never forget, or understand, how Bud Kerr got away with having the Flyers wear Notre Dame's blue and gold uniforms during his tenure at Dayton.)

I saw them on the A-10 feed until 10:13 of the 2nd Qtr when A-10 server quit! The red unis sure reminded me of those infamous Cleveland Indian all-red home uniforms back a few years. To be honest, the first few plays of the game my eyes wanted to follow Duquesne because they looked more like Flyers than the red team! Some future trivia has been created in 2013!

Take a look at the photos posted today with the stats on the homepage...especially the Dukes' pants!

Can't go back to the traditional look fast enough for me. Dukes looked good in their travel whites, but anything would look good compared to our "new' look. Sometimes I think the U would screw up a one car funeral procession. I will admit that my opinion is personal and others may well like the new look.

Can't say I've ever heard that funeral possession analogy, so Thanx! Can you give me another one about UD football live video feed on the internet?

You see that red curved wing on the Duquesne pants; wonder if a white one on red pants works out?

My first reaction was that baseball uniform remembrance; the second thought was that Coach stick to just coaching.

From my notes:

At halftime I wrote that Gianni Carter had 6 catches for 131 yds; almost equal to our entire offense.

After the FG score by Wm. Will to make it 17-20 in the 3rd qtr I wrote, "Defense greatly improved & Punting, KO & FG doing well". Later I wrote that Bardo was moving the team with running & completing about half the passes (except in red zone).

It was after reading the game writeup on the football site that the big change was told (without live stream we depended on the radio for this insight) that Sebetic was told to cover Gianni - wherever he lined up. That's why he had 1 catch for 4 yds in the 2nd half! Way to go Kyle!

Then it was a nice halftime adjustment. That big receiver was killing us in the first half.

Just a few post game thoughts. It seems, (I was told), that I was in a grumpy mood Saturday and so I was completely immersed in the negative aspects of our play. We won the game, but I’m not certain I am a great person to capture the positives, (I’ll try but feel free to chime in).
The first half was a struggle on both sides of the ball. We are fortunate that Duquesne was making about as many bad plays as we were. The botched punt by the Dukes was a huge gift. Still, we tried to run it in to the center of their line twice, getting stuffed, (again), both times before calling a play where Will had a chance to make a play, (and he did for 6)! On balance, our offensive play calling needs to improve. As has already been mentioned, pass coverage in the first half was not great. Our passing game you ask? One word and one word only, average…. If we are going to win the PFL we are simply going to have to overcome average passing if Will remains at QB. He simply does not throw good passes more than half the time. Of course sometimes when he throws a decent pass, we still drop them…. A real stroke inducer was watching Will notice that the Dukes jumped off sides, (free play which he had missed earlier), and airing one out to Ross Smith. Ross made the kind of circus catch that was common in previous years for a huge gain, (Dukes 16 or so….). Next play we try some kind of reverse, fumble and turn the ball over to the Dukes at our 36 or so. We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. Will’s long TD run was just a routine kind of QB keeper that we blocked well allowing Will to get to the open field. He is fast and no one was going to catch him. Gotta give credit where credit is due, Will made a sweet play there!
Speaking of strokes, it was really hot on Saturday. At game’s end my car thermometer was pushing 89 to 90 degrees. Our superior conditioning seemed to help in the second half.
One thing that we seem to be doing better defensively through both games this year is making the right adjustment at half time. We basically shut the Dukes down in the second half. Part of that was our big win in the time of possession battle. Credit an efficient offense or lock down defense, but we kept the Dukes offense on the sideline a good bit. Our running game was efficient, (minus Will’s big run). If we are going to be average in passing, I would like to see some continued improvement in the running game. Perhaps as our offensive line gels as a unit, we continue to improve. Pass protection was pretty good overall.
I found it interesting that we did not hear Pat Dowd’s name until late in the 4th quarter. The Dukes did a good job containing him.
As for William Will…. Wow. It just does not feel natural as a UD fan to now have confidence that when we set up for a field goal we are going to make it! No blocks, not mishandled snaps and good kicks. Talk about a powerful weapon that has been missing from our arsenal for what seems like years. Glad to see he earned PFL special teams player of the week.
Overall, a bit of a sloppy game for both teams, but it was important that we win at home and we did! Hopefully we continue to eliminate the mistakes and make the plays when we have the opportunities. I think we will need to play better in Moon Township on Saturday to defeat Robert Morris. Here is to hoping it all comes together in week three and we get on a roll going into PFL play!

I think DF summed it up pretty well. My over all impression was that we were the better team but our mistakes kept them in the game. I thought that the play calling was a little sporadic. I thought it was pretty good most of the first half until the reverse. Not sure why we decided to try that given how we had been moving the ball by mixing the run and the pass but maybe the coaches saw something. After the fumble on the reverse I thought we were too conservative. From that point on it seemed like the coaches decided that since our defense was controlling the line we could afford to run on 1st and 2nd down and then throw on third if needed. It obviously worked since we one but I think it made the game closer than it needed to be and it certainly could have gone a different way if #27 didn't strip them of the ball after that long play in the 4th quarter. I am not saying that we should have been throwing it all over the field trying trick plays but I do think we need to be a little more creative at times in keeping the defenses off balance.
