2009 Recruits!

http://dayton.rivals.com/quicklist.a...Year=2009&qs=1

Wow, check out the search for the various positions.... There are multiple QB's listed, multiple offensive lineman listed, multiple defensive lineman listed and multiple defensive backs listed. I have never seen so many kids on Rivals that have Dayton on their radar. There are a few from up here in Michigan as well. That 11-1 record and bowl game victory must have opened up some eyes! I'll post the individual prospects when I have more time, but color me impressed early in the 2009 recruiting process!

Jordan is listed at 6' 1", 265 lbs. He is from Royal Oak, MI and attends a Catholic high school, De La Salle. His HS recently defeated Detroit Catholic Central at Ford Field here in Detroit for the Catholic League title! (My son attends DCC, so he and his classmates were not happy. Jordan's GPA is reported to be 3.2.

The only school he has listed is Dayton!

Anthony is listed at 6' 2", 235 lbs. He is from Huber Heights, OH, (Wayne). He is listed as a "two star" by Rivals. Two star kids are good catches for FCS schools!

He is also interested in Air Force, Cincinnati, Northwestern, Akron and Eastern Michigan.

DL - Josh Barnett

http://dayton.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=80468

Josh is listed at 6' 4", 293 lbs!!!!! He is from Springfield, OH, (Northeastern).

His profile says he excels on both sides of the ball. He would be a huge offensive lineman for the Flyers! If he is at all athletic, he would be scary as a DL!

He is also interested in Miami, OH and Ohio.

Impressive!

As I indicated earlier, this is a very impressive list on Rivals so early in the 2009 recruiting cycle for our Flyers. In years past, at this point, there might be two or three kids, to have nine already is a great sign for the future.

Also impressive to note once again who we are recruiting against.... No Division II, Division III or NAIA schools listed by any of this group!

Good to see the Michigan connection as strong as ever. Coach Stanley must be doing a nice job up here!

If you know of other players that are being recruited by UD, please post the information in this thread!

OL - Zach Cherocci

http://dayton.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=89944

Zach is reported to be 6' 1", 248 lbs. He carries a GPA of 3.742 and an ACT score of 25. Also reported to be considering Ivy schools Brown and Cornell. Looks like another great student.

Yet another Michigan recruit. Zach is from the arch rival of my son's high school up here in Michigan, Brother Rice. At my son's school, you will just about be run off the property if you happen to wear anything orange, (a Brother Rice color).

I'm sure glad to see the Michigan connection to UD remaining strong! It will be very interesting to see if we can land him. He is probably Catholic, (a plus for UD), and Rochester, MI is much closer to Dayton than the east coast.

Heck, maybe I can catch a ride to games with his family....

WR - Keith Crawford

http://dayton.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=76563

Reported to be 5' 10", 188 lbs. Also reported to run a 4.6 40.... Sounds like a typical UD WR. A bit undersized so the big programs miss him. He is from Lawrenceville (NJ) Notre Dame, sounds like a Catholic high school. He is also interested in UConn, Stony Brook and Georgia Tech. Glad to see interest from New Jersey!

LB / TE Austen Richards

http://dayton.scout.com/a.z?s=429&p=9&c=4&yr=2009

Austen hails from Ogden, Utah, Bonneville, HS! He is listed at 6' 0" and 170 lbs. He is a bit small for a "traditional" linebacker and not even close for a tight end. I'm thinking that we are looking at him for our "Flyer" type position on defense and maybe as a Bergfeld type "TE" on offense. He is reported to be interested in Utah and Utah State as well.

http://profiles.berecruited.com/athl...cademics/67051

This site lists Austen at 6' 2" 200 lbs. That make a bit more sense. I gather that he played TE in high school and was an excellent receiver. His GPA is listed as: Cumilitive GPA 3.910! Yet another top STUDENT/athlete being recruited by our Flyers.

Of course one has to wonder how a kid in Utah, not exactly a hot bed of football recruiting for UD, heard about the Flyers. I'm certain there is an interesting story there.... Maybe he knows Will Falk....

Anthony is reported to have accepted an offer to Air Force. Too bad we could not land him, sometimes kids do not want to go that far away to play especially for a service academy. I guess the full ride was too much to pass up.... Oh well, sometimes these kids do not like the experience. Being a local boy, maybe we will see him in the future.

Bennett Estey Brighton TE Dayton

http://www.mlive.com/sports/ann-arbo...tball_rec.html

Looks like we landed another Michigan player, Bennett Estey from Brighton, MI!

http://blog.mlive.com/lcn/2009/02/br...s_with_ci.html

Brighton tight end Bennett Estey (6-4, 225) earned a spot with the University of Dayton, a nonscholarship Division I-AA program that captured mid-major national titles in 2002 and 2007. He said he'll compete with another freshman tight end for playing time next fall.

WOW, great size for a UD tight end!!!!!

National Signing Day!

Yes, today February 4, 2009 is national letter of intent day for college football. As a non-athletic scholarship program, our Flyers do not participate in the NLI program. So, all of our committments are technically "verbal". Still, many kids announce their intention to play at PFL schools today. So far, I have found two, (RB from Cincy and TE from MI), we will surely see more over the coming weeks.

A QB from Michigan!

http://blog.mlive.com/lcn/2009/02/br...s_with_ci.html

Quarterback Chris Cagle Jr. is leaning toward attending Dayton, said his father, Chris Cagle Sr.

http://www.maxpreps.com/michigan/foo...=,local,player

Link to Chris's stats from this past season. Looks like he can throw and run! Seems like he was on Grand Valley States radar. He is reported to be "leaning" towards Dayton. Maybe he is waiting for a full ride from GVSU? Here is to hoping he makes the "right" decision and joins our Flyers!

Connor Earley, RB from St.Xavier (Cincy) was not the featured runner but did carry 63 times for 330 yards which was second on the team. Listed as 5'11' and 195#.

Bennet Estey, TE from Brighton, MI is certainly a big TE at 6'4". 225#. That's a couple inches taller than Bergfeld, our senior TE who is the only one on the roster listed as TE. Brighton football did not have a great season and no stats were available. He was quoted as saying he would be in competition with another freshman TE so stay tuned because he knows more than we do.

Zach reported to have signed with Hillsdale College, a Division II program here in Michigan.

Maybe he knows Will Falk....
http://blogs.sltrib.com/recruiting/

Austen has signed with Dixie State, a Division II program. Bummer.

28 Recruits?

http://www.livingstondaily.com/artic...WS01/902050310

"Estey committed to Dayton, a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) school which does not offer football athletic scholarships.

"The coach told me they didn't have any scholarship offers, but that they were taking 28 freshmen in, and if I wanted, there was a spot for me on the freshman list," Estey said. "I chose it right away."

Well, according to Bennett, we will be seeing 28 new freshman this fall. I have located a few, but there are obviously a bunch more we need to learn about going forward.

Stevenson safety Robert Strong signed with Dayton, also a Division I-FCS

Reported to be 6' 0", 190 lbs. Nice size for a DB. Looks like he played some at receiver as well. 8 interceptions last season!

Colin Monnier from Chicagoland

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports...7303.htmlstory

Colin Monnier, Marist: Dayton

http://www.eastsuburbancc.com/html/d...allall-con.pdf

Reported to be 6' 3" 221 lbs. Listed as a linebacker above. He would be a monster sized linebacker at Dayton. I also see references to him as a tight end. That might make more sense. Still, great size for a tight end at Dayton. The other TE recruit is listed at 6' 4" 225 lbs. Could be a great competition for playing time as true freshman.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBlgfADEhmk

Some highlights for Colin. Looks like he will be a great addition to the team!

Strong will get stronger

I checked the physical stats on Robert Strong and while they are good and typical of a UD recruit, I wish we could learn what they would be after one season and a winter workout. Then by the end of a second year, the weight lifting will be about 50% greater. Amazing what college training can do for a body.

He also has the classwork level that our coaches like. And the beat goes on!!!

I have seen Robby Sherk from Oakwood play, and actually have played basketball against him. He is quick, pretty fast, and very strong. He ripped up the Southwestern Buckeye League this year (which had 4 OHSAA playoff teams) He is a dual-threat QB who is probably a better runner than thrower, but he basically single-handedly beat my former HS (Germantown Valley View) and led his team to the playoffs. He is a good athlete and coming from Oakwood in all likelihood in excellent student as well. Not sure what position he will play but I'm sure we'll find a spot for him.

Another Comet joins the Flyers

Joe Janasek, Solon, 6'-1, 186# LB

The school website posted that he "will continue playing career at the University of Dayton".

Joe was named to North East Ohio Conference 1st Team All Star and the AP NEO District 1st Team Defense. He also was named on scholar athlete awards and carries a 3.5 or better grade average. For the Comets last season Janasek was credited with 110 tackles - 28 were tackles for a loss - in ten games.

He will join an increasing list of NE Ohio players at UD in the past three recruiting years - Sean Belanger (Rocky River), W.C.Clements (Lake Catholic), Nick Collins (Padua), Brian Culiari (St. Ignatius), Connor Mackovjak (Walsh), Jamie Mewhinney (St.Edward), Nate Miller (Medina), Dan Norton (Lakewood), Bill Petraiuolo (Mayfield), Tyler Shutz (Mentor), Matt Shurtleff (St.Ignatius), Nick Shurtleff (St.Ignatius), Patrick Sweigert (Lake Catholic), Steve Valentino (Solon), Charlie Vasey (Chagrin Falls) & Steve Wirkus (Brecksville).

Anthony Sadler UD Bound!

http://www.mlive.com/communitynewspa...ootball_p.html

"In an almost identical suit in gold, Anthony Sadler was showcasing a printed tie with gold and yellow stripes, trying to look as professional as possible as he committed to play football at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

"I just wanted to look professional for a day like this, it's such an important day," said Sadler, who said he will miss going to out eat with his Carman-Ainsworth teammates after games. "The recruiting process was hard, colleges following you. I had to pray about it and get guidance from above and he (God) basically opened the door and told me where to go."

http://profiles.berecruited.com/athletes/392481

Reported to be 6' 2" 255 lbs. Also looks like another top notch student!

Jordan Boykin

Thanks to lurkingdog:

http://www.thepaper24-7.com/main.asp...rticleID=19411

"Boykin also looked at the NCAA Division I schools Louisville and the University of Cincinnati, along with National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) power St. Francis.

It wasn't Boykin who found Dayton, though. Instead, Dayton found him.

When Boykin attended a University of Cincinnati wide receivers camp this winter, some Dayton representatives approached him after the clinic to talk.

Later on, he watched films of the Flyers and visited coaches and the campus, which impressed him.

"It's a really nice community," Boykin said. "The campus is close to a big city, yet it's not part of it. It's a nice facility. The people there are really into sports. It's an all-around good place."

Sounds like another great addition to Flyer family. Another great athlete that may end up playing different positions during his time at Dayton.

Smile An Athenian from Crawfordsville

Nice catch there lurker pooch & michigander:

Jordan Boykin has no physical stats posted anywhere but he sure does have positions posted. The article referred to him as a WR and LB as well as a 3-sport athlete. The Crawfordsville High site had him listed as a WR & FB & DE. His photo shows some height and UD training will put on some weight & muscle.

His school would probably be an Ohio Div.II or Div.III with 740 students total. Nice to read how helpfull his coach was, especially in getting him some Flyer game video. Again, I think we marvel at how different things appeal to different recruits and the football history along with the campus feel helped this kid choose UD.

Zach can Splain things on his video interview

Zach Splain, at least what happened last year, is enough to get excited about the football future at QB for UD.

This school, Sherwood, is north of Washington DC, up past Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville, etc. Lots of population. They play 4A and went undefeated. Zach was a WR until about his soph or junior season when he traded positions with the QB. He holds for kicks and is listed as a DB too but no height & weight available.

The Flyers continue getting a stable of versatile athletes highlighted by our last two recruit findings.

This link will get you to his interview: http://www.digitalsports.com/article.../id/47651.aspx

Connor O'Hara, Mt. Lebanon

I know the Detroiter is glad to see another W. PA. footballer coming to Dayton and what a school that Mt. Lebanon must be. They have a national reputation for scholastic achievement. With 1805 students in the high school, they run 96% into some kind of higher education -87% in 4-year colleges!

They play big-school football but not very well. Last year they were 2-8 and their coach didn't post much info on his team. Connor O'Hara was a tackle (O or D??), 6'3" and 264#. Hopefully he will continue the good scholastic rating of the Flyers.

Paul Fackler, Luthern West High

Another QB from a very small (Division V) school with a name not often seen at UD. They just missed the state playoffs last year and Paul Fackler got a lot of PT.

Fackler is 6'2" and 195#. He completed 100 out of 176 passes for 1630 yards, 23 TD's and only 6 int. He carried the ball 95 times for 470 yards and another 7 TD's.

This school is in Rocky River, OH so the recruiting success in Northern Ohio continues for the Flyers. Thanks Detroiter for finding these announcements.

Dayton does not usually release a list of recruits until maybe later this month. Thanks to Lurkingdog, here is the list so far....

http://www.geocities.com/lurkingd/

RB Connor Early, (Cincinnati) St. Xavier
TE Bennett Estey, Brighton (Mich.)
QB Chris Cagle, Hartland (Mich.)
ATH Robby Sherk, (Dayton) Oakwood H.S.
DB Robert Strong, Stevenson H.S. (Sterling Heights, Mich.)
LB Colin Monnier, (Chicago) Marist H.S.
LB Joe Janasek, Solon (Ohio)
DL Anthony Sadler, Carman-Ainsworth H.S. (Flint, Mich.)

QB Zach Splain, Sherwood H.S. (Sandy Spring, Md.)

There are 12 recruits on this list out of a reported 28.

Long Awaited Posting

From the DDN, May 5th, Doug Harris story:

UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON
2009 FOOTBALL RECRUITS

QUARTERBACKS: Paul Fackler, Lutheran West H.S., Westlake, Ohio; and Zachary Splain, Sherwood HS, Brookeville, Md.

RECEIVERS: Sean Clary, St. Thomas Aquinas H.S., Salem, Ohio.

TIGHT ENDS: Jordan Boykin, Crawfordsville (Ind.) H.S.; Ben Estey, Brighton (Mich.) H.S.; and Matt Remond, Walsh Jesuit H.S., Strongsville, Ohio.
RUNNING BACK: Robert Washington, Seaholm H.S., Birmingham, Mich.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Kevin Bell, Robinson Secondary H.S., Clifton, Va.; Nathan Brandewie, Fort Loramie H.S.; Zack Cevasco, Tallmadge (Ohio) H.S.; Nick Lisle, Centerville H.S.; and Tom Corcoran, Pittsburgh (Pa.) Central Catholic H.S.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN: Brannon Dunn, Brookville H.S.; Connor O’Hara, Mt. Lebanon H.S., Pittsburgh, Pa; Anthony Sadler, Carman-Ainsworth H.S., Flint, Mich.; Jordan Elmore, Groveport Madison H.S., Groveport, Ohio; Victor Kaczkowski, Olentangy H.S., Powell, Ohio; and Eric Niekamp, Anna H.S.

LINEBACKERS: Joe Janasek, Solon (Ohio) H.S.; Jordan Martin, Vandalia-Butler H.S.; and Colin Monnier, Marist H.S., Chicago, Ill.

SECONDARY: Tom Hunt, St. Ignatius H.S., Rocky River, Ohio; Robby Sherk, Oakwood H.S.; Robert Strong, Stevenson H.S., Detroit, Mich.; and Kyle Sebetic, Temper H.S., Pleasant, Wisc.

KICKERS-PUNTERS: Mike Morgan, Bishop Ready H.S., Grove City, Ohio

The list totals 26 players, apparently the most from Ohio in a while. There are two Zachs and two Jordans. Missing from earlier lists are RB Connor Early (St. X) and QB Chris Cagle (Hartland, MI). Those two would have made 28 players which was an earlier number we heard.

Always interesting how these multi-talented players are departmentalized by the UD coaching staff. Robbie Sherk the QB,WR,DB from Oakwood High is listed as a DB. Anthony Sadler, a LB from Carman-Ainsworth High in MI is now a DL (I think I expected that move after seeing a photo).

There is still a chance that WR Trey Fairchild will transfer from Syracuse but he is still making campus visits in a closer radius of Columbus.

Nice group

Only one WR.... It sure seems like we have room for Trey....

Glad to see some offensive line size. A player coming in as a freshman at 270 to 275 has a good shot at being a real force at 300+ as a junior and senior. Kind of cool that one of the offensive lineman is also a swimmer. He must be a great athlete!

A bit surprised that we "lost" Conner. I thought the QB might not come if things got a bit crowded. Still, the two we landed sound good.

As for Anthony Sadler, I think I saw him at the Spring game. If it was him, he will be a defensive line force! Maybe another Scott Vossler type guy that can even drop back in coverage once in a while. You really can be creative on defense when you have amazing athletes at every position....

Looking at 4 years of recruit classes

My continuing early view of the recruiting class:

The 2007 recruits had 16 out of 24 team captains and the OL averaged 266#. There were only 5 DB's but 6 LB's. It's two QB's were still on the squad but not the two RB's in 2008.

The 2008 freshman may be the fastest team if only because an unusual number (8) were on their hs track team not baseball. In fact RB Harris is the 100-200-400 meter champ in his school (or conference). The Shurtliff twins have qualified for states in the last 2 and 3 years. Another RB, Jacob, holds his school rushing record. Of the three QB's, two are listed as punters too! There are two former hockey players and a lacrosse player; and I predict we'll see more lacrosse players as the sport is catching on fast.

Many schools represented in the 2009 class have no football stats or rosters on internet so it is hard to compare. Notice alternating large class then small class years. The avg. OL looks heavy for the 3 with weights, but that’s only 2 lbs. more than 2007. We have another lacrosse player and amazingly a swimming lineman. Lots of track stars just like 2008. Height continues good compared to a few years ago. Hope there's a center. Not sure what to make of all the SW Ohio guys. Lots of small schools here. Is economy a factor or have we out-of-state problems? Not many AP State Honors. Several teams had lousy records, others were state champs. Another group with leadership & smarts.

Here is how the numbers look:

...…….................2009.........2008.........2007.........2006

Kickers/Punters…..1……...........0*..............1......... ..... 2

Secondary………....4…..............8................5 . ............10

Linebackers ……....4……..........4................ 6...............2

Defensive line …...7……..........4................ 3...............3

Quarterbacks …….2…..............3................1............. . 2

Running Backs .....1…............4...............2.............. . 2

Pass Receivers ….4**…...........5...............2........... .... 5

Offensive line …...5................5...............4............ ....6

Total ...............28................33............24. ........... 32

* Two QB's listed as punters **Three are TE

vvflyer40 is on a distinguished road
SW Ohio and the MAC, which I would consider west-central Ohio, plays really good football, and that has seemed to pick up lately especially. It only makes sense that UD try to keep guys at home. Ohio in general is a really good HS football state, without a doubt in my mind top 5 nationally and arguably top 4 along with Texas, California, and Florida, all of which are much larger states. If UD wants to be really good, I think the key is maintaining local talent, much like the basketball program has done.

All-Star selection

Linebacker recruit Joe Janasek from Solon High will start working out with the East Team next week getting ready for the Greater Cleveland Football Coaches All-Star Game on June 12th.

Several members on the Flyer squad have played in that game and done very well in the past.
