Golz was subbing late in the first half, trying to give a few starters a blow, and hoping to make it to halftime nil-nil. Strategy failed. Giving up that free kick in the defensive third with a little over two minutes left in the first half was the dagger that led to the own goal. More talented players would have been able to avoid that foul that gave the free kick.
Butler's passing was just carving us up early. We then decided to bunker - and that strategy pretty much worked.
Offensively, we have none and are a hot mess. A lot of the problem is the poor trapping and passing. We have so little quality possession. We never really put a quality shot on frame the whole match. Of course, a lot of that was because we bunkered so much and only had a single striker up top.
Still, Butler put up a 4 spot on Notre Dame and we only conceded a single own goal. Through 5 matches we have given up 5 goals - two of those being own goals. I can live with that defensively. Progress is perceptible.
A fair amount of Butler fans on the terrace - a pretty whiny bunch as they complained about nearly every call that went Dayton's way. Unnecessarily so, IMHOP. After their beat down of Notre Dame, I think they expected a romp that did not happen.
