What kind of reception does BG get on Tuesday?

Pretty sure I know the answer, but how do you think the Flyer Faithful will respond to BG's homecoming on Tuesday evening?

I'll be coming down to Dayton for that game and plan to stand and applaud for him. Also want to shake his hand and thank him for everything he did for The U.

I will give him a standing ovation before the game. I will consider him my mortal enemy when the game starts. When the final horn goes off, he will be a good guy again. I always liked BG, and I wish he had a little more success when he was here.

In the spirit of the conversations ongoing in other threads, should we ask BG why he recruited Norman Plummer or why he let the program get so bad that Stephen Thomas, Big Des, or Juwan Staten decided to transfer??

Seriously, though, I will set my alarm for 0200 hours (I now live in Germany) to watch the game and, as usual, I will root for UD! After UD wins, I'll go back to cheering for BG in every other game! I would applaud him before the tip, but I don't think he'll hear me.

These guys have to play with a chip on their shoulder for the rest of the season otherwise we are in for a painful year.

I hope the reception for BG is warm and respectful.
I hope the reception for the Flyers as they take the floor before the Boston U game
is so loud it can be heard back on main campus so Scott and Robinson
can hear it as they watch on TV - assuming they care enough to watch.
Go Flyers!

As much as I didn't like his system...he is/was a class act and represented UD in an appropriate manner...he gets the standing O from me no doubt...systems and ideas don't reflect on the man he was for UD.

I will sit down in my seat, look at the ground, hoping a UD team minus two former players will kick his teams Arse, thus put him right back on the midnight flight to Atlanta. Hoping he leaves town this time, the same way he left the last time, after losing his most recent game.

I don't clap for the opposing team or coaches prior to a game against UD...it makes zero sense. Some of you are too darn nice for your own good.

Didn't say I don't want UD to kick the snot out of them...but a little class goes a long way...it will be same if not much better than what Grant got...

The socialist will clap I know; but if you think for one minute, that I look Gregory more than Anthony Grant, forget about it. Never going to happen!

I hope Georgia Tech finishes between 7th and last place every year in the ACC. Or, at-least every year under you know who. I would stick with 7th place, but then the ACC could get seven teams in the NCAA, so I had go lower...last place would be just perfect.

College basketball players shake hands before a game and after the game. They play hard during the game. That is the way it should be.

I like how BG represented the university, the charity work he did and how he stressed education and obtaining a degree. One of the best things BG did was bring Beth Flach to the university. And he backed her.

UD still tries to graduate EVERY basketball player and athlete. That happened before BG, but he always, always, always stressed academics. He brought in a number of players who were academically challenged, yet he graduated every one! Read the Chris Johnson quote in the Cronin center.

I will also tell you that I am not as much of a fan of the BG/Michigan State systems in basketball, but that is a basketball philosophy issue, not a personal issue.

If people boo or jeer BG, I think that would be a terrible shame.

If I can be there, I will cheer loudly when he's introduced.

Truly feel the man loved it here & did his absolute best for the program. We can debate whether his results lived up to expectations, but I think his effort & passion for the Dayton job were above reproach.

There no doubt doubt in my mind that BG is going to get a reception that he will be proud of.

His coaching and what he did for the program is not what I wanted. I think his leaving and AM coming was great for the program. However, if I was there, I would be up on my feet applauding as loud as possible because he's a good man with good intentions and he certainly didn't destroy UD basketball. Also, he deserves a great ovation not only for his years here, but his willingness to schedule us for the past two seasons, pretty classy.

And more....

BG is well aware of UD's current plight...and our immediate need for at least one big man. And, considering that BG and his family spent a decade of their lives in Dayton, I'm betting that UD is a lot closer to BG's heart than any of the ACC schools....other than his current employer.

That being the case, I'll bet that if BG is aware of anything/anyone in the ACC that might be interested in playing for the Flyers, he'll make sure that TW and AM know about it. Just opinion.

Similarly, AM must have plenty of friends in the coaching community that he can tap for info. We need a guy to transfer now, at the end of the first semester, so he'll be able to play next year at this time. The critical portion of the BB season occurs in the second semester.

I predict that we'll hear news along these lines soon....it's got to be soon.

What do you think, longtimer?

I hope a standing ovation. BG is a good man. He worked his tail off to improve this program. He obviously had varying degrees of success. No one worked harder than BG.

And remember, he had a great recruiting class coming in when the disastrous Staten daddy/son combo drove him off.

When a former Yankee comes into Yankee stadium for the first time he normally receives a standing "O". Unless of course he had negative comments after leaving. Yankee fans are loyal forever (bet you thought they would throw garbage...)

BG was and is a great representative to UD, GT, College BBall, his family, etc. I wish I was there to give him the standing ovation too. Having said that, this is not Yankee Stadium so I fear that it will be clapping with the boo birds filling in.

It better be a warm response. BG was a big part of UD basketball lore and put some of the most exciting teams I've ever seen on the floor.

I always felt like he was all in for Dayton and the community I can't say the same for OP.

I will be there and I will be on my feet giving him a standing ovation. Classy man.

I will then cheer on our undersized Flyers to victory.

I think a guy who is one of only three coaches in UD history to win an NCAA game with all of his own recruits (and to do it with such class) deserves a very warm welcome.

Every interaction I, or anybody I have talked to, has ever had with BG has been positive. He is a great guy, was an overall good coach, and without a doubt deserves the ovation that I have no doubt he will get.

I used to run into BG @ the Golden Nugget at breakfast. He and I were the two youngest in the place. He was always super friendly and in a positive and upbeat mood. One day I open my jacket as he walked by so he could see my Flyers Golf shirt, and I said good luck tomorrow night. From that day forward he would stop and say hi everytime I saw him. Great guy and he was great for the city of Dayton.

I'll give coach a standing ovation, then cheer like crazy against his team afterwards.

I've liked BG since before his first season. At the red and blue game, his daughter and mine made fast friends (as two year olds are wont to do) and ran around playing for a while behind the autograph table. Both BGand his wife's reaction to that, and friendliness to my daughter, warmed me to him from the start. Good guy.

I plan on standing and applauding BG the man and former Flyer Coach.

I'd give him:
A+ as a person and a representative of UD
B as a coach

In the end, the first mark counts more.

Last year, BG said he was not thrilled with having to play UD. I am sure that Tuesday night will give him mixed feelings, but he will have a job to do.

The 1952 UD team coached by Coach Blackburn went to the NCAA tournament. They lost in the first round to Illinois, but they beat Princeton in the third place regional game.

Ok, if you want to count a consolation game. I doubt Blackburn would count it. The NCAA eventually realized how silly those games were and did away with them. The Illinois game was the one where they got homered.

I hope everyone gives him a standing ovation. An absolute class act.

Going to dangerous territory, all the UD coaches in my lifetime has represented the University well -- Donoher, O'Brien, Purnell, Gregory, and Miller. I know a lot of people don't like Jim O'Brien and he was a bad head coach at the collegiate level. However, he was a very good man as well -- he was actively involved in the lay Society of Mary and did a lot of charity work behind the scenes.

The UD administration has done well to recruit coaches with character. Whenever one of them comes back to UD, they deserve a standing ovation. Another way to demonstrate that UD is unique in college basketball.

I think for all the nay sayers on BG there were some good times on his watch.

I didn't care for his lack of offensive tactics or sets.

But the NCAA win against Huggs was memorable to say the least. The display on how we WON on the way to the NIT title (playing all those "big 5 conference teams ON THEIR HOME court) was a sight to remember. The beat down of highly ranked Pitt and performance of BRob. All great games on TV too!

The excitement of some of BG's recruits such as BRob and Chris Wright!

So here's to you Brian Gregory! Thanks for the memories!

Now Go Flyers. Beat GTech!

My son and I will give him a standing ovation. I hope the Arena staff gives a few extra seconds to recognize this before they go into the UD video/line up announcements!

Actually the NIT team only played two road games on their way to championship. Not five.
And the Pitt victory followed by anoer BG A10 meltdown equalled yet another missed NCAA followed by NIT, seperat of course from the one mentioned in previous...there is nothing like 7th and 8th place in the mighty A10.

He didn't say they won five road games. He said they beat "big 5 conference teams" on the road. It might have been clearer if he had used the term "BCS conference teams." In regard to BG, I never said he was a great coach, but I did defend him because of some of his accomplishments, most of which are ignored by the BG haters.

Beat UC on the road (twice) for the first time in over 30 years.
Beat Xavier away from UD Arena for the first time in 30 years.
Won an NCAA game for the first time in almost 20 years.
Won the NIT while beating 4 "BCS" teams, 2 of them on the road.
Won 97 games in 4 years.
Owned Louisville. Hammered Pitt. Beat numerous BCS teams.

He didn't take the program to where we wanted it to be, but he did a lot of good things and deserves a Standing O. How anyone could read the Archdeacon article and still badmouth BG the man I will never know.

In your over enthused negativity you mis-read the statement --- we played teams from the BIG 5 conferences on the road not 5 games .... Geeezz (i.e. big 5 conference teams)

I choose to list the positives, and on the Christmas season too! Yet you want to maintain the negatives it reads that way in your post that all good things were followed by all bad things. I could have done the same in my post ... yet I wanted to Be Positive on this season.

You did not ... 2 sides of the same coin.

I'd wish you a Merry Christmas but alas you'd take it negative ....

and don't forget the flu that B-Rob had and the horrible January we had as a team(injury/sickness). What is funny about that year is we lost to OSU, when we wore blue as fans, and then beat them when it really counted, this year.

UD will never have a more decent man nor a better representative of the U than Brian Gregory. Indeed, it's clear that BG still is a "UD guy".

A better break here and there and quite likely his legacy would be praised...he might even still be here, who knows.

Nonetheless, as both Kissell and Wabler have said for years, there is no reason,...none,....why over a period of ten years the Flyers should not be in the Dance "more often than not". They are correct. I think most would interpret "more often than not" to mean at least half the time.

BG was unable to do that. Whether or not Millier will be able to do it remains to be seen. He's in his fourth year and has made the Dance once in spectacular fashion. That will hold us for a while. This year is young and we've had a tough break. That doesn't mean all is lost. The next two games will reveal a great deal. Should we win one or both there is ample reason to think that UD has a chance for the Dance again this year. For Miller that would be two years out of four.....the goal. Failure to do so would be diappointing. But, considering the circumstances, if we make it next year two years out of five would be acceptable, in my opinion. One year out of five, spectacular though last year was, is not what the administration is looking for.

Just my thoughts.

There were also a few off the court issues with his guys, the program was not totally pristine on his watch, several posters(cough cough, rollo)on here keep trying to say that Archie only cares about winning, while basically ignoring the same sort of problems that happened while BG was here.

If Brian Gregory was being considered for round two as head coach, then yeah, those things shouldn't be ignored. But we're talking about him coming back to UD to coach for another program. You can actually ignore them given the situation here, and applaud him. You ever notice how when someone dies, people don't really talk about the shortcomings? Same kind of thing. The feedback you give probably should reflect the actual situation. Not that a golf clap is disrespectful or anything. No issue with that. Just saying it's okay to ignore things.

He specifically said on their way to the title (meaning in the tourney itself) and on their home court Kmeaning UD was on the road); but you might be correct concerning the five games, and yet his post was confussing.

BG got a very nice round of applause. He did move this program a foot or two forward. He won a NCAA game, won the NIT, which is impressive (yes, it's not the NCAA, but winning the NIT is a nice feat), recruited 3 players who have made the NBA and represented the community and school extraordinarily. That is moving the program farther than OP had taken it.

Archie is a better coach.

Once a Flyer Always a Flyer

As stated in another thread, I believe there is a little UD in Brian Gregory. Read the nice Archdeacon column about BG in yesterday's paper .... yep he has good memories here.

Did some good things here that we were all proud of. He is the only coach to go undefeated in the Arena (and that placed was game ready in 1969!)

Two guys - Henton who would have been close to great for us and Gibson - a bust.

BG was a good not great recuiter. Seems he only focused on athletes, and did not do enough to round out talent with a few better shooters and plain basketball players. Glad he got such a nice reception and a whipping after. A perfect night >

IMHO

BG, Billie and his entire staff were A+ people and representatives of UD.

Many interactions between BG, his staff and myself and my family while he was here! He always took plenty of time with the kids, ornery fans and even a couple A holes who approached on occasion!

I stood and cheered loud-------great guy and it's quite apparent that he and his family will always be "UD" people on many levels now matter where BG is coaching!

I would add that BG seemed to have more faith in what the program could do. He believed we could compete nationally and we could bring in very athletic players. Look at OP's last 2-3 recruiting classes and how many of those players would you have liked to see on this years team vs. players from any 2-3 classes of BG?

Each of our recent coaches has built on what the previous ones had done and continually moved the program forward and that's how it should be
OP rebuilt the program but after getting us to the NCAA couldn't win the big one, allowed the talent to significantly dry up, and the program stagnated
BG brought in better athletes and showed UD could win in the post season and against top conference talent but as our talent was increasing, fans expected more and he couldn't consistently deliver based on the talent he had and the program stagnated
AM is winning in the post season, bringing in the athletic players but they also have high basketball IQs and like under BG, fan expectations are rising; thoughit is left to be seen if he can get us regular NCAA bids but it looks promoising
