Well That Was Fast

PITTSBURGH (PA) -- The Dayton Flyers face the Davidson Wildcats in their first game in this year’s A-10 Tournament in Pittsburgh. It was a sunny drive down from Michigan this morning for Mrs. Swampy and me, mixed in with the occasional snow squall. Highlight of the trip was that regular gas was $2.19 a gallon on the Ohio Turnpike, which somewhat makes up for the $13 toll.

Caught up with Larry Hansgen before the tip and he thinks UD should be able to run Davidson ragged, given that the Wildcats kinda ran out of gas yesterday vs. La Salle (and vs. UD a few weeks ago). He said neither team played defense—one time he thought the Explorers were in a zone because no one was moving. They weren’t—they were in a man-to-man set and still no one was moving!

Michael LaPlaca the video guru on Doug Hauschild’s staff said that the CBS Sports Network feature on the UD Mandarin Chinese broadcast team went over well. I sat next to them at the VCU game and they are into it, altho I obviously could not understand a word that they said!

Speaking of Doug, he said that his son Mike should get 2 or 3 more starts and will then find out if he made the major-league roster with the Texas Rangers. How cool would that be?

A Flyer fan just passed out in the section behind me and they brought out a gurney for him. They did CPR on him and wheeled him out...geez, I hope he's okay. Heard that it’s the father of UD’s Cheerleader Coach.

Spent the first 8 minutes of the half with my wife up in Section 104 amongst the Flyer Faithful. It was nice to be able to cheer for the Red and Blue which is kinda verboten on press row. Not much to make noise about as the guys now trail 23-11. Gibbs and Aldridge are making their threes, but Darrell answers with one of his own. Twice so far Aldridge has tried to make back cuts on Mikesell and twice Davidson has thrown it away. KP with the D on Peyton and he throws it away. Flyers stuck on 16 as they trail by 10. KP joins the parade of UD guys who have missed layups. The lower bowl here at PPG Arena is a sea of red and they are waiting for a reason to go nuts but so far Archie’s guys have not given them one. We’ve seen this movie before, fellas—it’s go time.

KP gets beat on a cut and DC is up by 12. The Flyers are shooting fade away hook shots and not making any of them. FINALLY CC makes a layup to break the skid, but Gibbs answers with a floater. A very ugly 30-18 scoreboard at the under 4 media TO. One of the zebras wins the “creative call award of the day” with an O foul on Charles…while he was dribbling. X man with a trey gets it back to a 13 point DC bulge. Scooch does the same, but matching threes ain’t gonna get it done. X has a three rattle out and UD trails DC 37-25 at the break.

UD stayed in the locker room until there was only 3:30 to go in halftime. Hopefully Archie lit a fire under their collective butts.

KP gets the crowd into it with a layup and the zebras decide to start calling things UD’s way. X cuts it to 10 with one of those hooks that wouldn’t drop in the first stanza. KD does KD things and it’s now down to 8. KP gets drilled going to the rack and will shoot two and make none, but X snags the miss. Scoochie drains a triple and gets fouled for a four-point play! 39-35! Coach McKillop wisely takes a TO.

They show Bucky Bockhorn up on the big screen with the descriptor of “Dayton Legend.” That he is.

Gibbs sends a trey try over the backboard and it is UD rock. DC has 5 PF thus far; UD none. KP misses an absolute bunny that would have cut the deficit to two! Still 39-35 at the under 16.

Yet another PF on Davidson gives the ball back to Dayton. UD ran the weave but it ends up with CC getting his shot deflected. He takes a seat and is replaced by DD. X with a mid-range jumper and it’s back to 4. An absolutely horrible offensive foul call on Scooch kills the buzz and POs the UD fans. X answers a DC three and it is 44-40. Darrell Davis for three! TO DC! 44-43 with 13:32 to go! Is that enuf exclamation points for ya?

The crowd is loud! X swats aside a Gibbs shot attempt. The zebras are playing catch up on the foul calls, but then DC gets whistled for their seventh. Just like that it’s back up to 6, 49-43 Davidson with 12:12 to go, but Josh cuts it to 4 off a feed from SS. DD with a nice pass to Josh, he gets hammered and will head to the charity stripe. He makes 1-2 and CC get called for over-the-back. DC gets three chances to make a three and Gibbs cashes in. Gibbs is taking it to the rack with authority as Bucky likes to say. 56-48 after the Aldridge follow-up jam with 9:37 on the clock.

KP with the reverse and it’s 56-50. Scooch misses a layup; KD off on a three; finally, DD flashes for a lay-in -- 56-52. Pollard gets hammered and there is no resultant call but Kyle gets the ball back. The crowd is a tad bit restless and can’t blame ‘em.

Kyle misses another three; but then X gets the friendly bounce on his own, 58-55. Charles misses a chance to tie it up. X is long on a corner trey but Davidson fumbles the ball out of bounds. Kendall cuts it to 1, but then is way off on a turnaround. Scooch ties it up at 60 a piece but DC answers; Cooke re-knots it. CC for three! 65-62 with 2 and change to go…and here comes the Faithful!

Davidson answers with a triple and Kendall misses a forced jumper. Gibbs with a three from the corner and Scooch replies with a two 68-67. But then a dagger three plus the harm.

Final:

Davidson 73
Dayton 67

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
