Long term benefits of the Elite 8 run

http://www.fool.com/investing/genera...aching-th.aspx

Kristi Dosh, one of my favorite sports business authors, has a great piece in the Motley Fool about the long term benefits of UD’s Elite 8 run.
Obviously there have already been buckets of money made on merchandise licensing, which will only continue. UD licensed apparel was purchased in all 50 states over the last few weeks.

The less obvious benefit will be the rise in awareness of UD by a broader audience. After Butler made their run to the Final 4, they commissioned a study to try and quantify the value of the publicity they received. They found the publicity value of the Bulldogs performances worth $1.2 billion. We didn’t quite make it to Dallas, but the value of being in the Elite 8 isn’t to be understated.

This awareness will in turn lead to a rise in applications to UD outside of the traditional recruiting areas. Unfortunately since we are not a state school like VCU or FGCU, we won’t see the direct financial benefit of more students paying out of state tuition. However, applications to UD will absolutely rise allowing UD to become more selective and ultimately rise in things like the US News & World Report Rankings.

Dr. Curran has said that he wants to make UD the Gonzaga of the Midwest. I think in a few years other schools will be saying we want to be the Dayton of the…

From a purely basketball standpoint, we have 2 scholarships open for next year and this run has to have pushed Archie's credibility level when selling UD on the recruiting trail through the roof.

Was thinking the exact same thing - "So, how'd you like to transfer to an Elite 8 program with many of it's players returning.... a place where you can have an immediate impact on another deep tournament run with one of the hottest young coaches in the country?"

Go ahead and talk about all the other things but I think as Archie said, it rejuvenated a fan base - current students, alumni and locals.

I can't speak for the locals. I know kids there now and great lifetime memories for them. For alumni it has reconnected many with the school and the basketball program and has reminded them what a fun, great place to have gone to college.

We needed this run as well to position ourselves for the BE, this could not have come at a better time with expansion likely coming in 2-3 years.

The impact to Butler vs the impact to UD are night and day different. Prior to elevating the image of its basketball program, Butler was a university struggling to survive. It was getting dangerously low on the quality and number of students it was attracting, and it's resources to market were limited.

The frequent NCAA appearances helped turn that, and the Final 4's further solidified the awareness of the school. They are now at a point where they are more selective in admissions and have a large applicant pool.

UD doesn't face the same issues. They have more applicants than they need, and it isn't basketball that's going to raise the academic profile of the student body.

Playing UD will no longer be considered a bad loss. Should help scheduling.

It seemed to wake up the campus and city. I guess we will find out come next October. IMO to make a serious impact on the recruiting trail you need to sustain success (make the NCAA 2 out of 3 rather than 1 out of 5) over a period of time.

Lets see if it has an impact on some of the Ohio kids the Flyers are recruiting (Nichols, Ahrens).
