Team Chemistry

Since 2 PM today, we have had threads started about recruiting, strength and conditioning, Archies coaching, transition offense, among others. I am not trying to slight any of the posters who started those threads by any means, as some are very valid points.

However, we could have a team full of 4 and 5 star recruits right now, and with the bad team chemistry and drama I sense among team mates, we would still be sucking right now.

As was noted by multiple posters early in the year, Schoochie was just not himself in multiple games even before conference play started. Kyle went into a funk a few games before our current 6 game streak from hell. Luckily Kyle wakes up in the last 10 minutes of the game on a few occasions, but he is just not bringing in from the start like in the past. Cooke has not been the same on defense, and even offensively with his movement since he twisted his ankle. Is it his ankle, or is it in his head now too? Sam Miller, not sure what to make of what I saw today and a few other times this season. I could go on, a few other guys have had games where they struggled with simple basketball tasks on the floor, like their minds were elsewhere.

The solution? I am not sure. Maybe this has happened, but if not Archie needs to fire up the grill on Sunday and have a lengthy all day long team meeting away from the arena and the basketball court. Talk openly as well as individually with every player, figure out who is committed to True team and get to the bottom of whatever BS drama is going on. If they were trying to keep whatever problem it is a secret among the team, it does not take a genius to figure out the team has failed. Even without the rumors on twitter a few referenced, I can sit in my recliner at home or in the 200 section and know a major issue exists, as many other have noticed. Quit acting like a bunch or hormonal teen age girls!

Tuesday is game day, the problem needs to be eliminated. Maybe a body or two are left in Dayton. Maybe a few guys do not dress for the game. Not sure the solution, but at this point I would play a John Gruden type player in our next game if that is what it takes to send a message. My calender says our next game is in March. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and we only have 2 games left to experiment (yes, I know we can not afford to lose both, but better than in A-10 tourney or whatever post season we may get too) before it is too late to salvage anything at all this season.

If it was me, and I knew who the source of the chemistry problems is I would sit them and limit their minutes. Seeing as how they have lost 3 of the last 4, and it took a miracle comeback to beat Duquesne, you might well see an improvement in the results.

I have faith that Archie and his coaches will figure it out, but that faith gets tested with every successive poor performance. At this point in this season, I feel like Archie needs to pull a Norman Dale and only play the guys who want to play the game his way. Everyone else gets a front row seat to the game in a nice, comfortable, folding, plastic chair.

I don't know if that's the answer, but what they're doing now sure as #@!! Isn't working.

I doubted Archie after the bad A10 start in the year of the Elite 8 run, so I am not going to make the same mistake again. However, there has been some kind of funk for quite awhile now. The coaches haven't been successful in getting the team out of it. It is hard to change things quickly that have become ingrained,

It is obvious that this team has the potential to do great things based on the first 22 games of the season. It is visually obvious when watching them in recent games that they are not emotionally invested anymore. Something needs to change.

To provide this change, Archie needs to get "hands on" with his players' emotions and feelings. I suggest that he should remove their privileges as basketball players. This means no time in the center, it escapes me what it is called, where the players hang out in at UD arena. Hold this until the players involved in this melt down chemistry wise come together and reconcile their differences.
