This game probably takes us out of title contention. Really hard to see our defense standing up to SDU. Hope they can but it would really be a turnabout.

If San Diego's defense is anything close to Stetson's...this could be a rough game. Stetson had the best defense we have played all season long. They were quick and challenged our line and Cook all day. He had to scramble all game.

Their offense is good too and if San Diego watched that film, they know how to score on us easily.

I am hoping we knock off San Diego and then they knock off Stetson and we are back in business, but a lot of football left.

anything can happen. the flyers lost their best running back the week prior to the USD game in 2015 and they still beat USD. Sometimes it takes a feeling of brotherhood, and playing not for yourself, but for the guy next to you. If he falls, you pick him up. If he misses an assignment, you got his back. You know that he would do the same for you. That is how good teams become champs.

At least UD has history on their side (see below). Although the tide has changed recently. IMO the aforementioned 2015 victory is possibly the last time they had a front four that went two deep that was pretty darn good. Something needs to change on the defense or the rest of the year may be pretty long.

Saturday will be the 27th all-time meeting between USD and Dayton, with the Toreros trailing in the series, 10-16.

- Despite the disadvantage in the series, USD has won three straight against the Flyers, including last year's 36-34 win in San Diego on October 13. The Toreros were forced to hold off Dayton's comeback attempt as the Flyers scored two touchdowns with under eight minutes remaining, but a two-point conversion on the final score was stopped by the USD defense.

- USD has won six of the last eight meetings and 10 of the 16 matchups since 2003.

- The Toreros have lost two of the last three at Dayton but won the last meeting at Welcome Stadium in 2017 (W, 23-7). USD is 4-4 at Dayton since 2003 (4-9 all-time).

In 2015, UD excelled in all parts of the team: offense, defense and special teams. Im looking for a classic UD stand from the defense, and the offense and special teams can hold their own. We will know with the first couple series in the game.

I suspect SD will try to hit fast and hard in the beginning and make UD play catch up. Historically, SD has won games in the last 6 - 8 minutes of the 4th quarter when it was close against UD.

Penalties on both defenses set up the scores. Missed PAT on special teams for SD. Miscues all around.

Gave up 50. that hasn't happened in a long time, Scored 38 and lost by 12, good Lord). Give credit to SDU they have a consistantly good program and the championship runs thru them. We on the other hand are hit and miss (this year the O is a hit, the D is a miss). We don't seem to be the program we once were. Not terrible by any means but a step or two down from what we once were.

As UD62 said, you arent gonna beat anyone giving up half-a-hundred. We used to be great; now we're just good. That's the feeling Ive had the last decade.

In the old days if we gave up 17pts, that was a lot. Most games were 42-10 beatdowns. Once Harbaugh got to USD, the tide seemed to change.

2013 better record 7 - 4
2014 a few plays away from the pfl co-champs
2015 won the conference and drove through a blizzard to lose to drake and let SD get a ring with us. But....we went to the playoffs.
2016 only pfl loss was to SD and we were ahead with about 6 minutes to go. Then the roof caved in.

3 years in a row, with one year champs, and 2 years that were very close to co-champs.

the program is still strong, but the rest of the pfl is catching up.

Next week USD against Drake.

I probably dislike drake more than USD.

This must be Dayton's worst defense since 1977 by some measure. That's sad.

Looking at the overall record of RC. It appears that he did well early with Mike's kids. since 2011 he has one co-championship, and an average finish around 4th place. Flagship program in the PFL is SDU, we are in the top half of the league. We have come close a couple of times but we are what our record says we are.

Thankless job following Mike Kelly. RC has been a loyal foot soldier. He'll be allowed to leave on his own terms most likely. He's in his 60's. We need change and new energy.

Agree Mike was a tough act to follow, 9-1st, 3-2nd, 2-3d, and 1-7th. really only one klunker when he went 4-6

Keep in mind there was a transition from DIII to FCS. IT changes the recruitment picture. IF a DIII program competes for a good athlete with a FCS program, guess where they go. Also, California has a lot of good athletes that get left off the scholarship lists. SDU is not close to another PFL team. UD has butler, MSU, VALPO, and a stretch with Drake. UD doesn't recruit much from marist, Davidson, Jacksonville or Stetson territory.

With that said, I am not excusing the records. Im not saying we have to accept the results too. Its just multifactorial.

The problem is we still play the same defensive strategies and game plans as we did 5 years ago, 10 years ago. I don't know if we have changed with the way offenses have evolved. Saturday was horrible. We played 8 yards off the reciever...we missed all kinds of tackles, we let that Bandy kid all alone multiple times.

If you watched what both Stetson and San Diego did on Trautman...there was one guy assigned to him no matter what the rest of the defense did...that constant shadowing reduced the effectiveness and impact he had on the game.

It's my opinion, the lack of defensive effectiveness is due to coaching. It is time for a new and younger defensive coaching staff. Rick can stay, but needs to get out of the way on the defensive side of things.

Let's salvage what is left of the season and finish strong.
