2022-23 Non Conference schedule
Figured we needed a thread. Arguing about the non-conference schedule is a tradition unlike any other
@Virginia Tech
Battle for Atlantis
I haven't been able to find anything on whether the A10/Mountain West challenge is dead
Does the A10 go to 20 games with Loyola?

Several years ago on the board, someone posted a link to website where you could see schools listing their open dates they were looking to fill with buy games and home and home series. IIRC it would list state whether the series needed to start at home or on the road. Does anyone else remember it or more importantly have the site that they could share a link?

Let's hope not. I don't think Neil wants that. He would either have to cut out a good game or two, or a buy game or two (money), maybe one of each. Just play 4 teams twice and 10 teams once, not unlike what they do now - 5 teams twice and 8 teams once.

I hope not either but I'm afraid of Dayton/VCU getting outvoted by schools that want two less non-conference games to schedule

I would be fine with a 20 game conference schedule only if The last two games could be arranged at the end of the season where top teams on the bubble could potentially get more quad one or two wins.

Right after the exhibition game we need to start out the season with three home games in a row against UMass Lowell, Lipscomb and Austin Peay! 3-0 record going into the B4A! Paybacks are heck!

I agree! Too many home games. We need a 15/15 split of home and road/neutral games!

And one of those games better **** well be against Wright State, before we enter Big East Conference play.

1 road and 3 neutral games for this young team? They need some home games for confidence. ;-)

Most UD fans harbor no ill will towards WSU. If you are asking why we shouldn’t play WSU, I’ll explain it (for the 1,000,000th time):
-UD would consider playing WSU as a buy game but WSU wants a home and home series
-UD’s scheduling philosophy only allows for 3-4 non conference home and home series
-UD wants to schedule home and home series with teams expected to be between 1-100 in RPI/Kenpom/NET rankings.
-WSU has never consistently ranked that high
-Even if WSU reached that level for one or two years, it makes no sense for UD to schedule WSU (H&H) again because of the intense pressure campaign from groups like DDN and other political groups in Dayton to keep the game going when WSU eventually falls back to lower NET ranking.
-Proponents of this game play a bait and switch game every year by claiming UD will play a team like UMass Lowell but will not play WSU. Most know they are misrepresenting the facts because one is a buy game (which WSU will not agree to) and the other would be H&H series
-some try to state a game on MLK day would somehow gain national attention. Never mind the NBA plays that day. Never mind very few outside Dayton would care. Never mind it would screw up UD scheduling philosophy.
I’m done.

And the elephant in the room is that UD can lose a game here and there to WSU especially at their place and that is a bad loss. If you beat them it's not considered a good W with very little, if any, to gain but if you lose to them it's a bad L all the way around.

WSU should agree to play UD at Third & Main Streets on 4th of July ......whatever it takes to get their foot back into the door vs. the Flyers.

If you're suggesting an outdoor game, that's actually a fantastic idea. It would definitely get major media attention. Imagine a D1 game played on blacktop! They've played games on military ships and hockey games outdoors, let's have an old fashioned street game.

Just suggesting that WSU should play UD whenever, wherever, just to get their chance. Flyers beat em, don't play again
Raiders win Flyers would have to re-schedule IMHO

@MattNorlander
NEWS: A first-of-its-kind nationwide noncon scheduling idea is developing behind the scenes in CBB that—if adopted—would adjust the sport's landscape each February.
22 leagues are talking. Way bigger/better—and much different—than Bracket Busters ever was.
Imagine this: a computer model determines all teams’ two noncon games (1 home, 1 road) in late January. Good teams only play good teams. A mini, in-season Selection Sunday. Then you get future NCAAT teams playing each other after Valentine’s Day. Sound fun?
https://www.cbssports.com/college-ba...into-february/
If the important multi-bid leagues (American Athletic Conference, Mountain West, Atlantic 10, West Coast Conference) decide to do this, college hoops could theoretically have late-February nonconference games akin to Gonzaga-Houston, Colorado State-Davidson, Memphis-Saint Mary's or Boise State-Davidson

Very interesting and exciting concept. Not sure how they work out the scheduling of arenas. Hopefully UD does not have some conflict when their turn comes up for a home game.

Presumably the dates are booked off before the season then the actual teams are added at a later date
Seems like a homerun to me especially with power conference scheduling getting more difficult.
Presumably the higher profile games could get some good TV exposure.

Thank God somebody is thinking outside the box.
With everything going on, I am starting to sour on college basketball.
NIL has become pay to play. No-sit-transfers.
I do not like where things are headed.
If players can transfer without sitting out, then schools should be able to start cutting players off the roster.

That is not true on a widespread basis.
When was the last time UD just cut 2 to 4 guys off the team at season's end? It has never happened.
This is a 2 way street. The players have all the leverage with the no-sit transfer rule.
Even in the pros players are under contract.
These guys are allowed to leave at the drop of a hat with no consequences. See Lynn Greer III.

Just cut from the roster, not widespread. Being told it would be in their best interest to transfer because they won't see the court/field happens all the time and is widespread.

But, the player still has the option to flip the bird to the coach and choose to stay and occupy a valuable roster spot. They are almost never just flat out forced out.
Again, the player can just leave at a moment's notice and play somewhere else during the next semester or season. The schools almost never just cut somebody at a moment's notice.
The playing field is not level. The players have all the leverage now.
In the pros, the player signs a contract and is bound to the team for the length of the contract. The player can not just leave at any time without facing negative consequences such as forfeiting their paycheck. The team can cut the player at any time but may have to pay out the balance of the contract depending on how the contract is written.
We need some balance, the smaller schools like UD are left holding the bag when one of their studs transfers to Kentucky at a moment's notice and has immediate eligibility at UK.

In what Universe is UD considered a smaller school?
— A consensus top 25 pre season team next year
— consistently Top 25 in attendance
—Never has lost a transfer to a “bigger school” (Meacham excluded)
The portal may at some point hurt UD but, so far, it has been a net positive.

I really like the Bracket Buster On Steroids idea. I wonder if teams who win both of their games will end up forcing some .500 big six teams off the bubble? Probably not, but a fella can dream.

That's the entire point of the idea. In-conference bubble teams beating up on each other doesn't move the needle a whole lot. On the other hand two Q1-2 non-con games that late in the year...

I really hope it works. I am just so cynical towards the committee. If the plan works, they will quickly move the goalposts yet again and find a way to get that last big six team that went .500 in.

I’m going to take a guess that it’s somewhere between the seventh and the 11th. Big Ten ACC challenge is usually the week after Thanksgiving, so they would not want us coming into their arena that week. The 12th through the 16th is likely finals week for everybody. So basically, that four day window.

Update
Robert Morris (11/19)
B4A (N, Bahamas, 11/23-25)
B4A (N, Bahamas)
B4A (N, Bahamas)
Western Michigan (11/30)
Wyoming (N, Chicago, 12/17)
@Virginia Tech
I assume this updated Bracket Busters event will not start this season, leaving 5-6 games remaining to be scheduled/announced.

Western Michigan game is a low key great job of scheduling. Should be the first game post Bahamas and that's always prime for a let down coming off an exempt tourney
See the Buffalo beating at home
Western Michigan sounds like they're in a rebuild and should be bottom of the barrel in the MAC

Been hearing some unconfirmed rumblings of a H/H with UNLV in the works for Dayton. Conflicted on how I would feel about that one but its better than a SWAC/MEAC home game so...sure.

A decade ago, UNLV was very strong. When Lon Kruger left they started slowing down. I think his son is the coach there now (same last name, so maybe that is just coincidence, but I believe its his son) They finished top 100 in Torvik last year and potentially return most if not all of their top players (had to tell with transfers and covid years in the mix). I wouldn't mind a H/H with a top 100 team the next 2 years. Plus I'm sure flyer fans would enjoy the travels to Lost Wages.

81 in the Torvik projections. They seem to be trending up and they are the definition of a "brand name." Solid series if true.

My thoughts exactly...I would take just about anybody decent to have a h/h with instead of another buy game.
We might get lucky if the opponent has a good one or two years when we play them. We could get lucky and get a q1 away game if the opponent is top 75, and we could get lucky and get a top 75 q2 home game.
Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240

Would Coach Kennedy want to play us? If memory serves, I don't think he has ever beaten UD as a head coach. We ended the Cincinnati curse vs. his UC team, beat his Ole Miss in the NIT semi-finals, and then played a series of home and homes, which we won each and every one of (including a win by a half-court Devin Oliver heave @ Oxford, MS). If I valued my coaching career, I would never agree to play Dayton again if I were him.
Perhaps this is a topic for another thread, but I wonder which coach has the best and worst records (% wise) against UD all-time (minimum 5 games and at least two home/road games to rule out the coaches of buy game teams that get paid to be beat every year).

He's in C-USA so he's in a tough spot for an at large bid if loses the conference tourney. UAB has the same scheduling issues Dayton has

Schedule almost done
https://www.daytondailynews.com/spor...JPCHKO2VF2UAU/
That leaves six opponents that have yet to be announced. Sullivan expects a “couple of other” games similar to the Wyoming and Virginia Tech games to be announced soon. These will be games against NCAA tournament at-large contenders.
“The challenge for us is trying to get the home-and-home games,” Sullivan said. “We were really fortunate to get Virginia Tech last year, but we would really like to have three or four of those on an annual basis that are home-and-home games or neutral-court games.”

One thing I didn’t mention in this story: Neil Sullivan said Dayton had planned trips to France and Spain cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, and it was postponed again this year because a couple of players are playing internationally for their home countries.

If the A10 is going with three pods of five teams (south, east, & west), that would be an 18 game schedule: 8 home & home games in the pod, 10 home or away games with the other pods. Seems like a no-brainer.

I think 3 of the 4 A10 teams are locks for our H&H ( SLU, VCU and Loyola), I'm fascinated who's going to be the 4th, will it stay URI cuz of Archie?
Last year it was VCU, SLU, URI and GW

If they go strictly regional, our pod would be Dayton, St Louis, Loyola, Duquesne, and St Bonaventure.

I think in the 1st year they might go geographical with Loyola and that means the two closest to them are SLU and us... that's why I'm thinking they are a lock

Loyola is popping up on some Top 50 lists. They did a good job in the portal
Sadly I think Duquesne is a lock for a H/H. I can't even remember the last time they weren't a H/H

I would prefer geographical but I'm probably in the minority.
I think we get just as good of a pod that way as we do random or "selected."
Loyola, SLU, Davidson, Duquesne sounds fine to me.

Geographical would more than likely be St. Bonny instead of Davidson.
South being Davidson along with the two Richmond schools and the two Georges
Everyone else in the north.

I thought about this but I'm guessing they'll want to split the Philly schools so they only play once in conference.

My guess is the won't go pods; its going to be somewhat geographical, somewhat merit.
So what does that mean for UD?
Loyola, SLU, Duquesne as regional ties (and markets that UD recruits their general student base from and have alumni in the region)
Then VCU as a merit based (lets get 2 of the better teams together) and a budding rivalry.
There are your 4 home and homes for UD. However, that doesn't meant that Loyola would have the same 4 teams. I'm guessing they see SLU & UD, then likely 2 teams further away, maybe Bona and Davidson
SLU gets UD, Loyola as regionals draws plus VCU as a budding rivalry plus 1 other.
VCU gets SLU, UD, Richmond and Davidson
and on down the list. At the end of the day, they need/want as many attractive games for TV purposes as they can get. UD vs VCU twice a year is likely the best TV draw they've consistently had over the last handful of seasons.

It’s interesting to me this schedule may begin on the road. Wondering if that road game will be at a team who will be moving from the American to the big 12 next year and sits about 55 miles south on 75?

Well I'll be dam!ed, hell has indeed frozen over and the wicked witch is dead, UD will play 15 road or neutral games for the first time ever. Congratulations Neil!!!!!
UD should have started doing this about 20 years ago when our peer competitors started doing this, but better late than never. Hopefully this becomes an annual thing.
Many, many, many, many, many on here for years and years and years and years and years said that UD could not afford to do this.
9 A10 away
3 at Atlantis
At VT
At UNLV
Wyoming neutral
I feel like I've died and gone to heaven.

He couldn't simply be pleased with the schedule. He had to take a shot at UD and other posters. I'm sure that one extra road game will guarantee us a 3 or 4 seed in the tourney.

I'd have to double check my math but in 19-20 I believe Dayton played more buy games than any power conference team in the country

Let’s do it again… Home and Home with SMU
Starting at the Arena this season on Nov 11
https://twitter.com/JonRothstein/sta...3v-VPLpwXJ0xrw
Time to get some revenge after losing both games in the previous one.
November is no joke! Yowza

I wonder if we will continue the 15 away/ neutral plan next year after we conclude the h/h with VT. We have three H/H situations this year, one at home and two away. If we continue with three a 15 setup is a posibility.

It's his fault. If he knew so much about this great new approach, why didn't he tell people about it?

I really like the schedule. It could get even better depending on the B4A draw and we usually seem to find a pretty good buy game around the top 100 mark. Not to mention the H&H we'll get with Loyola-Chicago if they are in our pod!
