Commitments in this tournament mean "If I've got nothing more important to do I'll be there" This is at least Cunningham's 2nd time committing and he hasn't patrticipated in it yet.

Other than the first year where we got to the semis I think at Capital before losing to Carmens Crew, the Red Scare performances have been pretty underwhelming. I think we need another big name or two to be a challenger.

Pros notwithstanding, I wonder why some of these guys wouldn't want to rep one more time for the red and blue. If they truly felt as they espouse they do, they'd jump for the opportunity to collect a mad paycheck as well as the chance to play in front of the Faithful. Reality is what it is, but if there's any chance, why the heck not?
How many of us wouldn't give everything to put on our uniforms one more time if given the chance.

Because it is all or nothing. Many of these guys have a limited time that they are going to be able to play pro ball. Players in Europe make far less than many on here think. The risk of injury and getting nothing out of it of it if you don't win it all is high. I don't blame them at all for trying to maximize their pro careers over a tournament with small chance to win.

IMO the TBT was smart to start off with the winner take all aspect. It got them noticed. The Elam Ending is also amazing. The TBT was more random teams at first, so it needed winner take all to get fan interest. It has morphed into having a lot of alumni teams (which I love). I think they would be smart to start paying more than winner takes all to attract more players to the alumni teams, as that potential rooting interest is even stronger. I love having the opportunity to watch former Flyers playing together on the same team one more time.

Red Scare has only been in the TBT 3 times and won at least one game all 3 times. They won 2 games twice.
2019: 64 teams; 2-1 lost to Ohio State alumni team in Sweet 16.
2020: 24 teams; First round bye; 2-1 lost in the Semis (Final 4) to eventual champ Marquette alumni team
2021: 64 teams; 1-1 lost to Miami FL alumni team
It's not a championship, but its not terribly "underwhelming" either. They have represented themselves and UD well.

Not sure if they are really looking to improve upon it. It's what? One week or a little more of games? I think it's somewhat of a summer fill in for college basketball that brings some nice tv revenue during a time where the only major team sport that anyone cares about is baseball. I doubt they can expand on the time frame as I doubt there are enough high quality basketball players who can carve out more than a week or so to participate.
It's really cool as it's a bunch of guys getting together mainly with other guys they've played with to have a week of fun and trying to win the main and only prize. In it's nature it's too willy nilly to try and make it bigger and better in my opinion.
But that's okay, to me it's a nice little distraction for a short period during the summer to watch a different kind of basketball and seeing our players again.

Well I hope the players still like playing outside as they just may have to if their squad is selected to play in the NYC regional.
TBT to hold regional at New York City's Rucker Park in basketball event's first outdoor games
The TBT announced Thursday that Rucker Park will host games from July 16-20, with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals at the University of Dayton on July 29-30.

All games will be at our arena. That’s part of being a host site for the first few rounds. Of course the championship is also there this year. so we are good!

Didn't expect to see Carmen's Crew backing out of TBT. Speculation is that Aaron Craft and some other players "retired" and they did not have enough players to field (court?) a team.

Wouldn’t you withdraw from the TBT too, if you heard the Dayton Red Scare Team was participating?

They have a Go Fund Me account again this year…to help with travel and staying in Dayton for a couple weeks. I saw somewhere Timothy’s is sponsoring the team, but they would still need additional help if you can chip in even $10-$20. My guess is you can run into the team at Timothy’s often during the tournament and after games. Getting to mingle and talk to some of these guys is well worth a donation. And to continue to get buy-in from these guys, it help to cover some of their costs to get here and play.

It was announced about a week or so ago. Maybe 2 weeks. No idea how often the TBT website rosters get updated.

Alumni Association announced a 50% discount, This is the link. I think the code gets you the discount, don't believe you need to be an alum.
https://offer.fevo.com/half-off-offe...6e5c%25252F%2F
Enter the code at checkout: DaytonTBT
Note: I heard Kosta Koufos has been replaced with Trevor Thompson. Koufas just signed with a European team who probably didn't want him playing in the TBT.

Does anyone know if tomorrow's game is on TV? I can't go but was hoping to record it. Thought it would be on ESPN but it's not listed. The 1:00 game is listed but not ours. I guess we wouldn't want to miss The Ultimate Fighter, The Premier Lacrosse League, or high school girls basketball (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU).

Yes. I believe it is on actual ESPN. does anybody know how parking works tomorrow? I didn’t see an option to buy a pass when I get my tickets so I assume you just park in the regular parking lots?

My ESPN app is showing ESPN3 as others have said. If you are an out of town Flyer then ESPN3 is worth the subscription. I do not miss many games and I might be able to find them on other streams but ESPN3 is easy to navigate and can record/rewatch missed games.

Anybody have a link for a free stream for one who has no cable access? Reddit has a link but it wants to first download some adware or other suspicious stuff. Thanks in advance!

The trick to Reddit links is keep clicking and to not DL anything. I got the Reddit link to work for the 1:00 game by doing that.
If that doesn't work, try here:

Scooch stops the run with an and-1…which started what needed up being an 11-0 run.

If Scooch could teach Mali all his finishing moves at the rim, Mali would be one of the best all around PGs we've ever had.

71-70 Red Scare. They have been trying to force three point shots when it is a two possession game whether you make a two or a three.

Cititeam turns it over and a fast break results in a short shot by Sibert for the 75-70 win

Happy with result. However, Sibert drove for shot, jumped, got it blocked before it ever left his hands, then put it up again, why wasn't that a jump ball call?

I think, in real time, that it looked like the ball was knocked loose enough that it wasn't a travel but, like you, I thought it was a bit questionable.

Travel or Jump ball I would think. It's like when Sibert's feet hit the ground after the block, the ball jarred loose by the impact of him hitting the ground(he bobbled it a little) then he threw it back up. I think his bobble fooled the refs. Either that or they were afraid to call it as the home crowd went crazy before they got a chance.

The Red Scare did not play very well. They got lucky to win. The Red Scare need to run more. Hopefully Trevor Thompson is not hurt. He hurt his groin area on a play where it looked like he bumped into Ryan Mikesell.
The next game is Tuesday night, July 26.

I've been an Archie Miller defender on here for a long time. But, watching Darrell Davis his senior season under AG and in these TBT games irritates me to no end how he wasted him on the bench while giving ball hog Charles Cooke the playing time Baby D. should've had.

Thanks for posting this. I watched the final play at very slow speed and now believe the refs got it right. As Sibert went to shoot the ball, and was raising it up with both hands, the defender slapped the ball which then bounced off of Sibert's chest or face and he regained possession and put it back up. It was more like the ball was tipped out of his possession for a split second rather than a blocked shot.

And we got to see what might be the first and only pass from Scoochie Smith to Obi Toppin. The problem was Scoochie was near the basket and Obi was behind the Flyers bench. He feigned shooting it.

RJ Greer was also at the game repping a UD Jersey
I fully expect if his dad is still on staff by the time the 2025 recruit enrolls, he should be a Flyer.

Clearly, Coach Gruden has a better concept of how to work Obi into the Red Scare offense than Thibs does of how to work Obi into the Knicks' offense.

AM probably had to promise CC a certain amount of focus in the offensive scheme to get him to commit. And, since CC and Baby D played much the same position…

Darrell Davis had good fundamentals but he was very emotionally fragile. It took him longer to gain confidence and get out of his own way than most good players. Today he is the player we (and he) always thought was trapped in that body. His body language spoke volumes about his lack of self confidence. Right or wrong, CC never lacked self confidence.

I always felt that DD would've gained that confidence he seemed to lack if he would've had a path laid out for him to be starter. When he was signed, I think we all expected he'd have his trials and tribulations and become a confident starter by his Junior season. Committing to Cooke stifled that normal progression along with him being thrown to the wolves his freshman season. As great as the 2014-2015 team did against all the obstacles, DD was used in a much more important role than originally anticipated and probably would've been better off just getting his feet wet like most of AM's freshman. And by that I mean he was pretty much asked to eat minutes to give Sibert, Scooch and Kyle breathers and his only responsibilities were to get the ball up the court without turning it over when Scooch got a breather and camping out in 3 point land when subbing for the other two. And he and the rest of the team had to play a very unique kind of basketball as fouling was worse than giving up easy baskets.
When the coach finally showed confidence in him, he showed confidence in himself and I'm talking about when AG took over.
He certainly was much more a team player than Cooke was and I think it would've served the Flyers better to suffer threw his growing pains than to let Cooke run roughshod over "True Team" concept that was key to the two seasons before he showed up.

DD is a good case study
Probably a good illustration of how complex 4 years in a basketball mill can be for teenage players. Changing coaches, systems, teammates, outside pressures----and more, can really play havoc with their minds and view of the world. I think playing in TBT , or even just watching from afar, would give pause to think what each of them would give to have a do over.
And how each and every one would spend their 4+ years differently.
But for the most part, basketball aside, they turned out to be good citizens. Good for them.

DD started 16 games and averaged about 21 mpg that year. The opportunity was there. I get that you don't like Cooke, but lot of revisionist history going on.

Interesting chess game may be going on. The Greer kid has been offered by FL, MI, UC and a couple others. Sounds like a potential the dad gets hired for a coaching job, and hoping the kid follows.

+1 on this point. In college DD was a shooter. He didn't defend particularly well, he wasn't close to Cooke in terms of strength, rebounding etc... If he was hot he played, alot, if he was cold he sat.
He did look good yesterday but consider how much defense was being played. At one point the commentator remarked that a 37 year old Trevor Thompson needed to be in somebody's camp he looked so good and I think that says it all.

Not getting into the DD conversation, but I noticed the lack of defense. Red Scare needs to commit to getting more aggressive on this end of the floor. Sure you can say they need to be better in the shot selection area, but stops will help them more. I’m going to attribute this to the coaches who need to get them bought-in to making more stops defensively.

DD started 17 games, and the Flyers record during those starts were 15-2 which means they were 9-6 when he didn't. He started due to Kyle Davis' injury and when Kyle returned, they kept DD as starter and Kyle became 6th man of the year. Then AM decided to put Kyle back in and DD on the bench to begin games starting on senior night and into the A10 and NCAA tournaments and the Flyers went 1-3. I guess we'll never know what could've happened if DD got to play more minutes with Kyle, Scoochie, Kendall and XW instead of having his starter minutes when Cooke was in there to stifle the offense but I still say it would've been addition by subtraction.
I'm guessing there's a very good reason that when TBT rolls around every year, the one name you never hear is Charles Cooke.

Something I didn't realize or forgot about in the TBT Elam Ending rules was that once a target score has been established, if your team is not in the bonus and are fouled, you get one FT and the ball after. Once in the bonus, it's two FTs but not the possession afterward.
I would think that one ft and possession is better than two FTs and no possession. Which to me punishes a team for not fouling enough. Thoughts? Is two FTs and no possession better than 1 FT and a possession?

Yes. I saw lots of people with beer.
I wouldn't know if the number of locations / beer selection is the same as at a regular game, but definitely beer was being sold.

Is there a back story to Ibi Watson that I'm not aware of? Why wouldn't he EVER want to participate or the other side of coin, why wouldn't the team want him?
When putting together a team that you hope is winner take all, a "reformed and regretful" Scott and Robinson, who accept their roles(and on the court, that seemed to be the case) would be more desirable than a selfish player that wants to be primary focus like a Pete Maravich without even 20 percent of the skillset Pistol Pete possessed.

I'm sure there is a really good reason but I wouldn't assume it is because he is a bad teammate or ball hog, otherwise I guess you would have to assume the same about Chris Wright, Crutcher, Kendall Pollard, Kyle Davis, and the scores of UD guys who started and/or contributed but for some reason are not on the team.

One thing I hope we can all agree on is that Joe Thomasson can take a seat for while. He shot virtually every time he touched it and I don't recall a make.

Kyle and Kendall have been on the team. Crutcher is still teetering on getting to the NBA late and the TBT doesn't seem to be the best option for that goal. Chris Wright was 9 years removed from CBB when the Red Scare was formed. Cooke is within that window where most Flyers on Red Scare come from.
All former UD players who've participated in TBT have played for Archie Miller and that's the window you are looking at right now. Dillard, Vee, Oliver, Scott, Robinson, Kyle, Scooch, Sibert, Mikesell, Landers, Cunningham and Darrell are the one's off the top of my head who've participated. Only one of those players were a Flyer prior to AM(that being Oliver and he played 3 of his seasons under the AM era).
So, of all the key players through the AM/AG years that have been away for a couple years or more, there's Crutcher still looking for the path that gets him to the NBA, Obi who's in the NBA, Pierre(who did commit to TBT but had to back out), Kavanaugh(who probably is either shunned or just didn't keep playing at a high lever) and Khari Price who probably with his bad knees doesn't have what it takes. Basically, the only multi-year starters with no obvious reason to not participate from at least part of AM era on are the older ones (Benson, CJ...) Cooke doesn't fall into any of the categories that I can see. Though he does now participate in the G league but I'm guessing that he's also not wanted.

I don't know anything about Charles Cooke as a person but geeze did he kill your dog or something? You know way more about what goes into selecting guys than I do as evidenced by your post. I guess I just never knew that we had a guy who was 2nd team all conference and 1st team defensive all conference that was universally hated.

Kendall (2019, 2021) and Kyle (2019, 2020) have both played.
Crutcher commented that he was ready to put on a uniform and get on the floor.
Chris Wright has probably effectively aged out. Probably the same for just about everyone on the 2010 NIT team. There isn't a cross-over with anyone on the current team. DMO was a freshman on CW's 2011 team. There are some older guys in the tournament, but most are still playing professionally.
FYI: DMO got married yesterday, so I'll give him a pass for not playing.

I watched him take a team that was unselfish for the previous two years where they won 5 NCAA tournament games and single-handedly stifle the offense when ever the ball touched his hands. And then there's another incident with Scooch that also seemed to ruin team chemistry but I'll stop there.

As a fan, it was obvious Cooke did not get along with all of his teammates. I think I could count on one hand the number of times he passed to Mikesell. I don't care who was right and who was wrong, it should go unnoticed on the court.

I know nothing about Cooke personally, but I watched an early season game in 2015-16 with a friend who’s, literally, a rocket scientist. He asked me what I thought of Cooke. Almost on-cue, Cooke took the ball to the hole against 2 defenders, when he had a teammate wide-open in the right corner, in front of the Flyers’ bench. I told my friend that Cooke seemed to be a much more selfish player than the guy he was replacing (Sibert). The following 2 seasons did little to change my mind.
Now, the young man is only about 28 years old, and he may wind-up as the 2nd coming of George Bailey. But, for the 2 years that he wore the Red and Blue, he didn’t seem to be the embodiment of True Team.

Thanks for the education, I guess I didn't see, or at least didn't notice, his selfishness or the destruction of the chemistry.
I will say that looking at his stats averaged for his two years at UD: 5/11 shooting, 40% 3pt shooting on about 5 attempts per game; 1:1 assist to turnover for a SG, rebounding, steals, it doesn't scream selfish to me.
It is difficult for me to consider a guy who plays D and rebounds at that level selfish, which is not to say it is impossible or that it was not the case with Cooke but those are things that don't end up bringing you personal attention but greatly contribute to team success. A quick compare of 2014-15 and 2015-16 also shows that with the exception of Kendall Pollard, everyone's scoring went up when Cooke joined the roster (including Scoochie and DD, Pierre stayed the same).

Cooke is the fall guy on this thread, but there were a couple of cliques on that team. I saw that firsthand. There was one clique and Cooke hung out with the other clique. This was off the court. The team was not as unified as others.
In the loss to Syracuse in 2016, Kendall Pollard played with a broken hand. He was 2-7 and 0-4 on FTs. Made the Syracuse zone much more effective. His injury was not revealed till much later. Of course, Cooke had an awful game as well.
