Not much size so if we do not dominate the inside, then we have problems.

Findlay beat Wright State tonight 80-76 and destroyed them on the glass. This is supposed to be a very athletic WSU team and Findlay was leading most of the game. Missed FT's allowed WSU to keep it close and get back in it.

So does the coaching staff play this one like a real game and not worry about getting everybody a lot of minutes? I don't see five in-five out like they did against Ryerson.

Defense is still as yielding as butter is to a hot knife. Guys dribble from the top to the glass at will.

hand checks are going to dominate college hoops and it will also make games miserable this year. be prepared for that.
also D is still nowhere to be found. makes me wonder if we ever work on it in practice

Boy, this is just miserable to watch. If they don't cut back some on the calls and let the teams play a little bit I may have to watch soccer this winter.

Halftime thoughts.
- Defense optional for both teams
- The handchecking change is going to bug teams all year. VCU may have more trouble than most.
- Siebert looked tight at first, but boy did he loosen up! Very nice to have no drop off at the 2 when we sub.
- We look like a solid free throw shooting team, but we look the same defending the 3.
- Scooch with a freshman mistake on the 5 second call. Hopefully he learned.
- Pierre is a joy to watch--just a fundamentally solid basketball player with good talent.

Larry and Bucky are right. These zebras aren't just calling hand-check fouls, they are calling any manner of contact, no matter how slight. It makes for very uninteresting basketball.

That was painful to watch. I think it was the opposite effect of the intention of the hand-checking crack down.

London slowed down penetration for sure, but teams still seemed to hit a lot of threes against UD. Fans used to complain about the fact that teams always seem to come to UDA and shoot lights out from downtown.

Probably the worst officiated game I've seen. They were all over the map on the block/charge calls and if you even slightly nudged a player it was a foul. If they call it like this all year VCU will never have enough players to finish a game.

Like I told a friend yesterday, the officials are going to have to figure what is a foul and what isn't before the players can do it. Tonight they called any contact on the ball a foul not just hand checking or using the forearm. If you can't use your chest then every game will be like this.

Whats ironic is all of these mandates and changes are always designed to free up offenses and restore the "beauty of the mid-range game" that has been lost over the years. But its doing just the opposite. How many mid-range jumpshots did you see tonight? I counted one -- by Sibert. Everything else was either a drive to the hole (for the all but guaranteed foul), or a three pointer.
The effect its having is just the opposite of its intentions. No question defenses need to move their feet better. But offenses need to stop instigating contact and drawing fouls too. The principle of verticality should be enforced just as much to the protection of the defense.

The memorandum from the NCAA said "Clean up hand checks on the perimeter and don't let defenders slide under players in the air," but the officials read "Clean up hand checks and don't let defenders slide."

not sure that there is much to take away from the game. There was no flow and the way the game was officiated made it impossible to play defense. Who knows if tonight was aberration. Reminded me of a road game at Miami years ago when BG was coach and the Flyers got called for at least 10 illegal ball screens out top. It was the only game like that the entire season.

How many players can a team dress? We might need a few dozen walk ons to complete some games this year. Can we bring out the football team? That would be lots of warm bodies.

Maybe they are going overboard in the preseason to try and make the point, but the way the game was called yesterday was beyond ridiculous. It was called so tight that it was best to drive for a lay-up every time because someone was sure to touch you for a foul along the way.

I heard that the coaching staff went nuts when Gavrilovic was undercut and hit the floor but no foul was called.
After watching Dillard and Brob get knocked around like pin balls something had to change. This isn't supposed to be football where the strongest guy wins all the time. Larry and Bucky talked about the calls and said things will ease up in the coming weeks. They will find a middle ground

As I watched the replay, it didn't seem that he got undercut so much. He went up for the slam, was in a run getting to the basket, and his momentum had him swinging, and he had one hand on the rim to hold himself up, but lost his grip so wasn't able to swing back.
I'm glad Sibert was able to get up after his head hit the cushion on the flagrant foul.
