I don't know what UD's problem is, I just think UD fans are insulated from the outside world. UD fans are so used to getting 12k or 13k fans/game, UD fans are so used to the program being mediocre, UD fans are so used to having the program having all the resources that it needs, that IMO UD fans don't realize that they should be screaming at the top of their lungs demanding more.
The ROI for the UD program is pathetic IMO.

No offense, but I'm going to have to file away your thoughts on the mentality of UD fans with the likes of hUDygrad. Severely compromised by allegiance to the propaganda of Gangster U.

Back on topic. The Rhode Island and USC losses are biting big time. If those had been Ws, with the Cal win yesterday, etc.. UD would still be in the hunt...
There is still a long shot chance, but the post players have to play better and the team needs to get red hot

and just how many years did it take X to get there. And with there recent winnings over UD they still trail. Shows who owned who. UD will pull out of it just as X has and continue to own X down the road again should X ever decide to play UD again.
Was never a fan of X but always rooted for them when not playing UD in the days when we did own them. Since they found their winning ways they have just become so arrogant I can't root for them ever again. Champions know how to win with class....and that is not X.

I can see why X don't want to play UD home and away. Games at the Cintas were very close while X took beatings at the Arena.

That would explain the stunned silence on their messageboard last season when the NIT inexplicably passed them over.

Better yet... Some things just never change...
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/gameca...version=mobile
"Semaj Christon shoved Daniel Ochefu after on Xavier possession, then trash talked his way off the court after nailing a 3 that pulled Xavier to 57-45.
Wright's call for a technical was ignored by the refs. Christon's conduct wasn't forgotten by the fans, who booed him each time he touched the ball the rest of the game."

Five Dayton OOC opponents in action tonight
Results for Tuesday, Feb 4 - 2014
#6 Kansas (17-5) won at Baylor (14-8), 69-52.
Ole Miss (15-7) fell at #18 Kentucky (17-5), 64-80.
Winthrop (11-10) won at Liberty (9-15), 73-62.
Iona (13-8) won at Monmouth (10-13), 89-71.
And in a game involving two former Dayton area coaches, Georgia Tech (12-11) fell at Clemson (15-6) 41-45.
". . . The Yellow Jackets were a seriously depleted squad . . . Leading rebounder Robert Carter Jr. is out indefinitely with a knee injury, senior forward Jason Morris is gone with a broken foot while reserve guard Solomon Poole was dismissed from the team on Monday.
Yellow Jackets coach Brian Gregory had hoped to have Golden back for this one, but he did not see action.
Still, Georgia Tech stood toe-to-toe defensively with the Tigers, ranked second in the country in points allowed. . ."

Ya gotta feel for BG...it seems he continues to suffer from the same bad luck at GT as he did at UD (mid-season injuries to key players and character issues among certain kids): too bad.

Tonight is Big for the A-10
SJU would do the conference a big favor by knocking off SLU in Philly. But if SLU continues to roll they will progress in the polls and serve as a worthy flagship program for the A-10 this year. I think SLU will win a squeaker on the road because of their defense and toughness.
SBU should lose in a close game at Richmond which will not bode well for the Flyers visit to Olean on Saturday. UMASS should rebound with a win at home against LaSalle and GW will throttle Duquesne in DC. My heart says UD will beat George Mason but my head says "Oh no..
Do we have the defense that travels well?"

Sorry but I don't. He is being paid handsomely for what he does. Yes he may have had some bad breaks injurywise at GT as well as at UD but his teams still lose games that they shouldn't. While I commend our Flyers for winning a tough game on the road, his team lost a home game to the type of team GT needs to beat if BG is going to ever be considered a good coach. Even with the bad break in 07/08 of losing CW, if the Flyers could have found a way to beat a couple of lower tier A10 teams, they would have been dancing.

George Mason wins at Duquesne. They also get Duquesne at home. I'm guessing those will be their only 2 wins.

SJU got a very fortunate charge call at the end. Looked like a block and if it had been called that way VCU would have had a free throw to tie the game with 20 seconds left

Amazing what you can do when you run an actual offense, instead of a pointless weave for 25 seconds. That Delaware State game this year was the weirdest coached team I'd seen in quite a while.

Out of there league
From the Horizon to the A-10 to the basement. Wonder what Fox1 and the BE are thinking now. Was Stevens that much of a difference? Butler getting blown out by X down 20 at home.
Was this the Butler assistant that wanted the UD job?
At least DePaul has company now.

They were do for a down year with not being able to replace Rotnei Clarke. Long term they're in trouble. Stevens leaving cost them JP Macura, probably Bluitt and their other high level targets for this class.
There's just too many guys on their roster that don't have it. They need a true PG and Dunham needs help with perimeter scoring and they don't have either.

The key to beating them is to just harass Dunham. Never go under his screens. Make it impossible for him to get off a three. Ideally, never let him get any touches.
X just took him out of the game tonight. Without him, the Bulldogs just don't have enough firepower to win against good teams.

I think that's not good for us. We want to beat UMass and have it look like as good of a win as possible. The win over Mason isn't going to look good no matter what.

I knew Mason's luck had to change. Oh so thankful it didn't happen against us.

I would contend that if we tie with UMASS at 10-6 in conference (losing only to SLU), winning the tie-breaker and finishing ahead of them is more important than a few points in their RPI.

Look at UMASS' remaining games, they will be fortunate to go 9-7.

Having them finish definitively behind us is good too. Just think we need to be in or tied for one of the top four places in the league. How many times have we groaned when the 7th or 8th best team from the Big 10 or ACC went to the NCAA? The A-10 is good, but the 6th or 7th best team is going to the three letter tourney.

Maybe on the 7th or 8th place team making the three letter tourney...Maybe?? That depends on who it is. I am not saying they will make the NCAA, but there is no guarantee that if LaSalle or Saint Bonnies finishes in one or both of those spots, that they would even make the NIT.

I like the short handed add. I think we need to more be more public over the rest of the season if we get on a run about how we were short handed during our 4 loss run.
Need to make sure the selection committee gets wind of it.

The State of the A-10
The race for the top four seeds is nearly settled in the A-10. SLU, VCU and GW are leading the way with SJU, Richmond and UMASS battling for the fourth spot. The dreaded 12-13 seed opening game of the tournament is being hotly contested at the bottom of the conference by URI, Duq, Fordham and G Mason. If the season were to end today UD would be a 7 seed and play as yet an unknown 10 seed (URI/Duq/Fordham/GM are all tied).

Dayton is only 1 1/2 games back of the 4th seed now with games left against the teams sandwiched between them and the 3rd seed GW who we beat.

small, small, tiny UD mention here:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebask...sses-elsewhere
But most important is that it didn't come in the section about a good number of "bad losses" for bubble area teams. Overall a good take on last night's action, even if the UD mention wasn't there (again all it says is that Dayton & Richmond picked up needed wins against teams that won't build their resume, but that is certainly better than getting it lumped in w/ the bad losses)

Not so quick. Leaving the Flyers out of the discussion. GW is far from set in being 3 or 4. Check out the schedules and you will see that everyone with a shot at a first round bye has opportunities to make or break it.

We have a week to prepare for our next game against LaSalle at home. We then have a road game against Duquesne. This are two winnable games that should and hopefully will put us in the hunt for a 4 seed in the A-10 tourney. We should be focused on LaSalle b/c it's not like anyone would looking ahead to Duquesne.

I don't see the top 4 nearly settled. There is a lot of games to play and many of those teams will be up against one another. I can see VCU and SLU cementing a top finish at this point, but the 3 and 4 seeds are a long way from being decided. GW has as good a chance of a 9-7 finish as we do with the way they have played lately.

I think UD will need to go 6-1 (loss to SLU) in order to get to #4. 5-2 can get to #5.
It will be interesting to see how St. Joe fares down the stretch. Not being deep, will fatigue take a toll? They also have to travel to GW, LaSalle, Bonnie, and URI. Only Dayton, fordham, and LaSalle at home.
UMass is in trouble. 3 home games remain, but 2 of them are SLU and VCU (URI beng the 3rd).
Both SJU and UMass finish at home, but have 2 road games prior to their final game.
Richmond ends the season with VCU (3/6) and @UD (3/8). Short turnaround for before UD even if they get to sleep in their own beds on 3/6. They are starting a 3 game home stand.

Butler is 2-11 now in the New Big East. I wonder how they are enjoying their new league? I wonder how many years before they sniff the NCAA tournament again?

Close loss tonight for the Bulldogs. Once again, a good team (Creighton) absolutely blanketed Dunham on Butler's last possession. X did the same thing a few days ago, and won.
Everyone in the building knows Dunham will take Butler's last shot. You simply have to stop him.

Butler will be back sooner than you think. Between departing players, the loss of Brad Stevens, and a brand new conference...for the second year in a row, that's a lot to overcome, but once that all calms down, Butler will be competitive in the new Big East. They all but beat a top 25 team tonight.

Butler played the #1 team in the league to a standstill .... down to a last second shot to decide the game. And, a very very physical game it was. I doubt the Flyers would win against either of those teams if they are allowed to play that physical..... Brutal!

I look at Butler as the leading candidate to take a fall from grace in the NBE. George Mason played Saint Louis into overtime @ Saint Louis, but I'm not predicting big things for them anytime soon. That is what happens over the course of a year in college basketball. There are points where certian teams play up while other teams are playing down.
Depaul can only lose so many of the NBE games. There are going to be other programs racking up bunches of losses in that league as well. Half of the teams eat and half of the teams get eaten in every round of conference games just like all the other leagues. Some teams are going to become habitual losers and that will affect their programs.

Quiet night tonight, though two games stick out: Monmouth @ Iona and Arizona @ Arizona State. Iona has turned into a nice win, hopefully they keep it up and get closer to that magic number 50. I consider ASU a bubble team so go Wildcats.
Bubblicious saturday:
Virginia @ Clemson (go Wahoos)
SJU @ La Salle (go Explorers)
Duquesne @ URI (not a bubble game, but I think URI winning helps us)
Pitt @ UNC (go Pitt)
Oklahoma @ OK St. (Boomer Sooner, Cowboys are no lock)
DePaul @ Providence (come on OP, do us a favor)
Xavier @ Marquette (yuck, go Warriors)
LSU @ Arkansas (go Razorbacks)
Fordham @ Richmond (go Rams)
Stanford @ Washington St. (go Cougs)
WVU @ Texas (hook em')
Rice @ La. Tech (go Owls)
BYU @ St. Mary's (???)
FSU @ Wake (go Deacs)
Not to mention all of our non-con opponents in action. Boy do I love this time of year.

Valentines Day 2-14-14
Only one game involving a Flyer opponent tonight (that Iona win is starting to look real good):
Monmouth (10-16) loses at Iona (17-8), 70-89.
Iona now leads Manhattan and Quinnipiac by 2½ games in the MAAC.

SLU/VCU.........great game. VCU was only 2/13 from behind the arc. If they'd had just had a few bombs drop it could have been different.
But then, SLU has a way of making any and all shots difficult.

VCU is not a good shooting team (ranked 282 in the country). SLU should have won that game by double digits. They were up by 9 and pulling away and then committed a bunch of dumb turnovers, dumb fouls, and missed free throws.

X falls to a hapless Marquette to give the Golden Turkeys their first 3 game winning streak of the season. They have become something of a slumpbuster in the New BE.

That depends. I think with 2 game leads, St. Joes and Rich are out of reach for catching, to get into the 3 or 4 seed in Brooklyn. We really want no worse than the 6 seed in order to avoid the 1 or 2 seeds until the semis. I think we should be rooting against GW and UMass here on out.
It is possible for the Flyers to catch St. Joes or Rich (and stay ahead of UMass and GW) but it probably means going no worse than 5-1 to finish and hoping everything else with the others goes perfect.

Root against GW because we play Richmond still. There is almost no path to the 3/4 seed that doesn't have us finishing 5-1, so I assume that we are going to finish 5-1 and look for the best outcomes for that result.
GW loses to Richmond, SLU and then if we finish 5-1, we are at worse tied with them and have the tiebreaker
SJ loses to us at home and all 3 road games or 2 road games and LaSalle at home. We have to finish a game ahead due to their better conf win against VCU UNLESS we beat SLU. One possible tie win is if GW beats them and we are tied with just GW and SJ. Then we would have the best record among the 3.
Richmond would need to lose their last 2 vs VCU and us and then 1 other game, all losable.
They have won single games against SJ and GW, so they would win a tiebreaker if all 4 tie.

St Joe and Richmond are barely in the field at this point. GW and UMass are more solidly in. I would root against St Joe and Richmond the rest of the way so we can slide in ahead of at least one of them.

I think your logic is correct. I was only thinking of the A10 tourney. You are looking at the bigger picture.

This is a good point. If we are not in the top 4-5 in the A10, I think we can forget about being in the NCAA tournament.

GW hangs on for the victory. As stated, probably good for us. We want all bubble teams to lose, especially to teams that might be solidly ahead of us.

Watched a little St. John's v Butler from the Garden. There could not have been more than 8K there for the game. Of course, the box will say there was a big crowd, but when the upper arena is totally empty and the lower arena looks maybe 30-40% full.........8K is being generous.
DePaul isn't the only one who keeps the lights low for a reason.

#5 Duke (21-5) with an easy win at Georgia Tech (13-13), 68-51.

Tw Big Games Tonight
in addition to LaSalle-UD that impact the Flyers are SJU at URI and UCLA at Cal. I think SJU will win a close game at URI but a loss would make it tougher for UD to beat them in Philly next week. A Cal upset of UCLA would improve UD's RPI. A Rhode Island win over SJU would help UD pass SJU in the standings if they can win by enough of a margin in Philly.

twice this year. They lost by 3 points at UD so they must win by 4 to win a tie-breaker if they finish league play with the same record.

I do not think point differential comes into play in any tie breaker scenario.

No, not out of the closet with this post, I was out of the closet over 3 years ago on this board in a different post.
I disclosed/posted, in a pretty lengthy post, all the way back in January of 2011 that I was a fan of both Dayton and Xavier:
http://www.udpride.com/forums/showth...ure#post201713
http://www.udpride.com/forums/showpo...3&postcount=77
From the 2011 post:
"Some disclosure first: I am a UD fan originally from Dayton that lives with a friend who is an X fan in Cincinnati. My friend and her family are big X fans, so, I go to the X games because of my friend. I am a fan of both teams, but I am definitely more a UD fan than a X fan."
You posters aren't harassing me any more than I get harassed by my X fans for being a UD fan. I'm a UC fan too, and my X friends harass me for that too.
I cheered for Huggins' UC teams, but I was not a fan of the team not doing well enough academically, and I was not a fan of the players getting into trouble with the law so frequently. I cheer for Cronin's UC teams too, and I'm glad that UC has cleaned up the academics of the basketball team, and I'm glad that UC's players hardly ever show up on the police blotter now.
I root for UD over X and UC.
If diehard fans don't root for rivals, then I am not a diehard fan of any team then. Diehard X fans probably don't root for UD or UC, I do root for both UD and UC.
I'm an Ohio State fan too, and I root for all the other Big Ten teams(including Michigan)except when they play OSU. And I'm a Bengals fan that roots for the rival Browns except when they play the Bengals. And I'm an Ohio U. fan that roots for the rival Miami Redhawks except when OU plays Miami.
I cheer for all the Ohio teams: UD, Wright State, OSU, UC, X, OU, Miami, Bengals, Browns, Reds, Indians, etc.
I feel like I have been pretty objective on here with my comments regarding X. If I have not been objective, then I apologize, I am not on here to antagonize people about X.
If I wasn't a UD fan, then I wouldn't spend so much time on here.
After the UD vs. X game last year at X, I posted a YouTube video on here of DMO getting shoved in the back on a rebound off a missed free throw in the last minute or so of the game. I *****ed quite a bit on here about what a terrible call that was by the official. A non-UD fan wouldn't have posted such a video IMO.
Archie even complained after the game on his tv show in the following days, that he thought that was a bad call.
IMO, that terrible call had an enormous impact on the outcome of the game.
http://www.udpride.com/forums/showth...ube#post295238
Ha-ha, yes Glen, it is possible to be a fan of both teams. I'm living proof.

I bought a couple of UD t-shirts off of the Billie Tees website. I've worn this red t-shirt, with the old school UD football helmet design on it, to the last 3 or 4 UD vs. X games at the Cintas Center. The other fans and ushers in my section, that I am friends with, all look at me and shake their heads when they see me wearing my UD shirt at that game. I just laugh and smile. I get a kick out of that.

Meanwhile - back on topic . . .
Three bubble teams were in action last night - all at home, all with wins:
Houston (12-14) 64, SMU (21-6) 68;
DePaul (10-17) 64, Xavier (18-8) 83;
Washington (14-13) 71, Oregon (17-8) 78.

More than those 3 bubble teams were in action.
Minnesota lost at home to a dreadful Illinois squad.
Marquette (at the far end of the wrong side of the bubble) lost at home to Creighton
Colorado knocked off Arizona St at home.
Indiana St won at home over Evansville
LSU beat Miss St at home
Missouri beat Vandy at home
Arkansas beat South Carolina at home.
the bolded teams have all been mentioned either at the backside of the field, on the bubble, or fighting to get on the bubble with a few big wins (like Marquette had hoped)
Of those games, Minnesota is the only that truely hurt their hopes, they've got a huge stretch coming up against Ohio St, Iowa & Michigan. 0-3 is not out of the question as they've been struggling lately, however its also a huge opportunity to pick up 2 wins to put them solidily in the dance. Iowa is at Minny, the other 2 are on the road.
Marquette needed that win to spring them back into the conversation, losing to Creighton won't look bad, but its a big missed opportunity if they wanted to get into the At large picture. They've got a few more chances, but they've got a lot of ground to make up.
Colorado picked up a big win. They've got Arizona at home this weekend, arizona st takes a few steps back, putting themselves in position to stumble out of the field.
The last 4 were kind of like UD's win over Lasalle, much needed home wins to avoid the bad loss, but nothing to significantly boost their profile. Actually, LaSalle is probably the best team from that group of opponents, so UD gained a small notch over those 4, though mostly insignificant at the moment.

There are a handful of "bubble games" worth UD's attention tonight...
Penn St @ Nebraska. Nebraska has put themselves into the conversation, but still has work to do. Penn St has sprung a couple of upsets so far this year, this would be like UD's win over LaSalle, everything to loss, not much to be gained by Nebraska
GTown @ Seton Hall... Gtown is in on a lot of brackets, but near the very back of the field. I've seen Seton Hall twice in the last couple of weeks at home. Not only does the crowds look weak, but so does their team. This is a must win road win for GTown and a chance for Seton Hall to knock them to the wrong side of the bubble (for now)
Gonzaga @ BYU Gonzaga doesn't have a ton of impressive wins, but a bunch of wins none the less, obviously a victory for them would help UD's profile as they'd stay w/n the top 25. They'd have to run a string of losses to fall out of the field. BYU is currently on the wrong side of the bubble, but in the picture. From what I've seen, they play less defense than Dayton, but a home victory could potentially spring them into the last 4 in/first 4 out if they can close out the season with victories.
USC @ Stanford USC has been dreadful since departing Dayton with a victory. Stanford doesn't overly impress me, but they're hanging around the good side of the bubble.
Outside of that, the two St Francis' play one another.

According to the 'DanceCard', Arizona St and Colorado are solidly in the field (ranked #22 & #27, respectively).
Minnesota (#32) will definitely fall, how far remains to be seen.
Missouri (#36) will hold their spot.
Arkansas is 16 spots below the cut-off line, Indiana St is 20 spots below the cut-off line, LSU is 21 spots below the cut-off line, Marquette is 22 spots below the cut-off line - all these teams are given 0.00% chance of making the tournament.
'Bracketology' has these teams in, but they all fall below the cut-off line for 'DanceCard":
Tennessee (#51) 2.42% chance of making the tournament.
St John's (#52) 0.90% chance . . .
Georgetown (#54) 0.11% chance . . .
Providence (#55) 0.05% chance.
Lunardi has these teams out that are above the cut-off line for 'DanceCard':
Baylor (#39) 87.41% chance of making the tournament.
Richmond (#43) 66.96% chance . . .
Oregon (#46) 25.18% chance . . .
Dayton (#47) (last team in) 24.73% chance.
Joe Lunardi has six teams from the Big Least and five from the A-10; 'DanceCard' had three fom the BE and seven from the A-10.
These numbers will all change as the season unfolds - look for updates at these websites:
DanceCard - http://www.unf.edu/~jcoleman/dance.htm
Bracketology - http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

Flyer opponents, results for Wednesday, Feb 19

The bubble is full of A10 and NBE teams. It should be interesting to see how it all shakes out in the end.

Not only does the crowds look weak, but so does their team. This is a must win road win for GTown and a chance for Seton Hall to knock them to the wrong side of the bubble (for now)

The G'Town - Seton Hall game is on CBS Sports tonight at 9, for those who may be interested. This is their second meeting. The Hall beat G'Town earlier in DC

Georgetown is terrible. No way they are making the tourney. They just got swept by Seton Hall, each by double digits.

I watched the second half and was surprised that the announcers felt G-town was still in the NCAA picture, even after suffering their 10th loss. They do have three impressive wins (Mich State, VCU and K State) so those wins keep them in the discussion. Plus their strength of schedule is very good.
Then again, they've lost twice to Seton Hall and to Northeastern (a plus 200 rpi).
