5/12 might go 4-0 depending on what happens to New Mexico State Clemson

Oddly, I can't seem to find the Gangsta A&M game against Texas Southern. Probably just as well. I can't afford to replace a broken TV right now.

Watched the first half. The thugs were the thugs. Macura the Punk, and others, were talking trash and bumping the TXS players, and no calls and no discussion from the ref crew.
Auburn gets a questionable no call on a potential game tying three by CofC to hang on.

Yeah, I watched the end of the Auburn/Charleston game. The broadcast team replayed the contact on the 3 attempt. Definite missed call. Hate to see something like that happen so close to the end of the game. And in the postgame, courtside interview, Pearl downplayed the no-call. No surprise.
Also no surprise that thugs are thugs, punks are punks, and _avier coaches and players act like classless asshats. They'll get their comeuppance someday. I just hope I'm still alive to see it.

I am just about done with college basketball! Been a super fan for all my life and I am finding it increasingly hard to even watch a game……
The game is more physical today than ever before, despite the so called rule changes a couple years ago. Just way way tooooo much contact allowed on both sides of the ball.
The 3 ball has ruined the game… it is far too easy a shot by today’s players…. how many times yesterday and today did you see a team up a point or 2 with under a minute left just fool around and run the shot clock and just jack up a trey …. too win? Good quality basketball? I think not!
The “acting” in the game is worse than in Major League Soccer…. Referees are made fools of more times than not… no consistency… no moral high road. Just one flop after another. The instances where a defender just jumps in front of a driver, and falls down to force the ref to make a call is much higher than ever.
Offensive players push off with the non-ball hand every time they drive…. But they have too because the **** refs let the defensive guy slap, hit, hip bump, and anything else they want…. So what is the rational for a foul call? One way or the other?
“Charge” verses “block” calls are as arbitrary as a flip of the coin. Rules, and there interpretations, are vague and overlapping.
And I will save you my triad on the $hitty quality of the announcers and color comentators…. I “mute” them all pretty quickly. They just throw out buzz words that usually don’t even come close to matching what is going on in the game, AND they won’t shut the …. up!
To sum it up, it is NOT fun to watch any more! I think I need a beer!

Virginia now has the reputation of being the victim of the two greatest upsets in college basketball history. First, Ralph Sampson and UVA losing to Chaminade in the Maui Invitational in 1982. Now, the Wahoos become the first #1 seed to lose to a #16 seed - and they lost by 20!

A lot of good points Terry and I agree with most of them. But I'll provide the dissenting viewpoint on the 3-pt shot. In my opinion no rules change in the last 30 years has done more to help level the playing field of CBB between the haves- and have-nots than the 3-pt arc. Not just as a weapon to spark an incredible comeback, but as a tool to design your offense around, to recruit for, and use as a main focal point of your program. There are only so many big burly bodies in D-I that are impact players and they all go to the blue bloods of CBB. Much of being a dominating interior player is DNA -- your physical size you can thank mom and dad for. The 3-pt arc however is a weapon for players not born to the lottery of life, and many of those players go to the non P5 schools. And since 3pt shooting is not contingent upon a lot of physical God-given advantages, it rewards players that practice it as a skill with repetition. Its much easier to be just as good a 3-pt shooter as a Duke guard than it is to be an interior player as good as a Duke forward or center.
The 3pt shot played prominent roles in Dayton's entire 1990 season and upset of #5 Illinois, and #11 Ohio State/#3 Syracuse in 2014. Were Norm Grevey available vs #4 Arkansas, we probably win that game too. And in all of these games -- on paper -- we had less talent.
One last thing: Im not sure the 3-pt shot is as easy as we think. In a lot of cases I think CBB players overestimate their own shooting prowess and take too many ill-advised treys -- including wide open ones. If you are a poor 3-pt shooter, its a bad shot whether guarded or not. We saw that firsthand w/the Flyers this year.

Agree. Whatever happened to the rule against impeding the offensive player? Offensive player dribbling in a straight line and a defender jumps in his path from the side and as long as he has both feet down it's a charge. BS. What is the offensive player supposed to do? He can't stop, can't cut fast enough. It's just a ridiculous call. And that was supposed to be the point of the impeding rule I thought.

Of course it is not reviewable. The visual that should have signaled the referee is the CofC three point shooter's shot was about ten feet short on a decent look. Who does that unless they are fouled?

If Refs called fouls based on the shot being too short, players would purposely leave their shots 10 feet short when the needed to reach the FT line for 3 shots. They can't call a foul unless they see it, or think they see it. And it took replay in slow motion to see this one. Also, if you're going to assume a foul on a shot being too short, why not assume a clean tip of the ball by the defender instead?

Agree totally. The benefit of the doubt should go to the offensive player. I would love to see some statistics as to how many more charges are called in recent times vs the past.

You can play a heck of a lot better than that. Certainly should have been able to keep it under 25.

I am not explaining myself correctly. No ref can/should call anything based solely on a players reaction (flopping) or the ball flight. In fact on a three attempt it is difficult to see the ball flight because initially you are watching the defender and the shooter through the follow through. Then bang bang you look up to see the ball and whether it went through. Believe me there are many times you see what you think is contact, and the ball goes on a strange flight, which confirms contact.
In the case like yesterday, as happens, you get screened and miss the contact, and the ball flutters. You cannot call a foul just based on ball flight. The ref blew the call, because either he missed the contact, or he saw it is as very incidental, did not watch the ball flight, and chose to let it go. Not correct, but it happens.

Loyola over Tennessee 63-62 on a bucket with 3 seconds left. As ugly a game winning bucket as one will ever see. Don't ever doubt the power and pull of Sr Jean.

Nothing ugly about that shot for Michigan. Of course, if Houston hits their free throws, that shot means nothing.

The ref who is watching the shooter/defender NEVER follows the flight of the ball. Their job is to look for contact...the official under the basket (Lead) watches the boxing out and the 3rd official watches the flight of the ball.
"Ball-Watching" is not a complimentary term in reffing. Each official has their 'Primary' and 'Secondary' areas to watch as well as clearly defined roles. Refs at the NCAAT level are not 'ball watchers'. It doesn't mean they don't miss a call now and then, it just means they know exactly what to do with respect to where they are on the court.
2 other things...
1) You can't call what you don't see.
2) As we discuss in pre-game, 'if a player goes down, know how they got there'.
I didn't see the shot discussed above, if anyone has a link I'd love to see it.

Many teams are not used to that zone, especially its length. Conference foes see it more and deal with it better. MSU also could not hit the broad side of a barn today. Think about it, they hit that 3 pt banker at the first half buzzer and another banker in the 2nd half. Miss those and they are shooting even worse for that game.

And they essentially play 6 players, and come back after playing a game two days ago.
As they say, excuses are for losers.

Sort of like BG’s old teams that were all athleticism and no offensive game plan. P5 schools thought they could run us out of the gym, but that’s what BG’s teams did best (whether BG knew it or not). The A-10 teams, however, saw us annually (some of them twice), so they knew how to beat us.

I saw all of the games in Pgh. Villanova and Duke were much better than any of the other teams there. They could each have won by 50 if they wanted to. Duke is huge! They had 3 guys playing at once who were all 6'10"+. These were not space eaters, but athletes. Villanova is not as big but they shoot lights out and they defend.
The Duke fans are eletists and love Coach K. It is easy to hate Duke... Coach K is a real donkey's rear end; on a par with Coach Hurley. I have officially added Duke to my most hated teams list ( _avier, VCU, and Notre Dame).

With all the up-sets this past weekend an article on ESPN discusses the need to re-seed the teams remaining. In the article they present why or how each team remaining has played .... It seems to indicate there is no ONE way to advance (we most likely agree with) for instance:
Folks like to say "defense wins championships," but that notion was challenged in the opening weekend of this year's NCAA tournament. Five of the NCAA tournament teams ranked within KenPom.com's top-12 slots in adjusted defensive efficiency lost.
Nevada, a powerhouse offensive squad that has led the nation in turnover rate and made nearly 40 percent of its 3-pointers this season, beat two of them (Texas and Cincinnati) to advance to the Sweet 16. Cincinnati, No. 2 all season in defensive efficiency behind Virginia, had amassed a 22-point lead over Nevada with 10:50 to play in the game, but Eric Musselman's squad launched a 32-8 run to complete the most thrilling comeback of the NCAA tournament thus far.
|
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-bas...eding-sweet-16
Some have height, some have hi-offensive approach, some have a defensive skill, some just seem to be doing the right thing at the right time (maybe multiple times).
It gives me hope that next years squad will have ironed out their unfavorable s, improve their team chemistry and settle in on those skills that match their ability.
At least that is what I'm hoping!
BTW I really liked Arizona, MSU, rat_avior going down.
Cincy take or leave it. I don't hate on them so much.

Great, ESPN all over it as usual. So have a committee, who does such a good job initially, re-seed the teams, so there can be more griping. This can result in more subjective criteria and possible football school favoritism. I guess they are scared that a Nevada and Gonzaga now could be in the Final 4.

Misleading article title.
This is just an article of ESPN ranking the remaining 16 teams based on how well they have played so far. Nothing that I see in the article is calling for any kind of formal "re-seeding" or changing the matchups. It is just a nice summary of how the teams have played and ranking them from best to worst.

This was most evident in the NIT final where NC covered LWarren past the foul line and opened up the middle for us. No A10 coach had the Jet's outside shot covered. Very poor game plan by the "great" coach.

Well - no disrespect to Dayton, but our season goal was not to win the NIT and therefore I thought we could walk in to MSG and they would hand us the championship trophy because, after all we are North Carolina and I am 'Ol Roy.

Over confidence? They had recently beaten us a few years earlier at their place by like 100 points (only 30 but being there it felt like 100). Say what you want about BG but that was simply brilliant strategy to lose by 30 to insure an NIT crown 3 years later.

Ha Ha
Maybe we are the fools. He was halfway through his plan to get us to the Final Four.

Well, I had no idea that's what NC would do but after watching them play against Rhode Island the previous game, I told two NC alumni that I worked with that NC had no chance in hell of beating the Flyers. If I recall, they had no business beating the Rams. Seriously, those two teams looked like NIT teams playing while the Flyers were playing like a well oiled machine at the time. And the main reason was that CJ was playing like NCAA tournament star.
Also, didn't the A10 teams incorporate a lot of zone defense against us back then? I think the power schools always figured that the "lesser" conferences game plan against them, not the other way around.

Am I the only one watching and cheering on the Ramblers? Another close game. I try not to care who wins but I can't help getting sucked in. 1.4 left in a 1 point game.

Did anyone else questions a few of the calls or administration of calls in the Loyola game? One foul on Nevada that should have been a shooting foul called on the floor. I slowed it down and watched again and the refs arm doesn't even go up until after the ball left the players hand. On another foul against Loyola it was called a shooting foul when the Nevada player clearly passed the ball. And adjusting the clock from 1.0 to 1.4 after Loyola already had a chance to inbound the ball, but called timeout instead. Now I understand that no time came off the clock but why didn't they check the clock before they checked it ready for play the first time?
And they missed a travel at the end of the game when the two players bumped knees.

I love the way the Ramblers make the extra pass. They remind me of the 2014 Flyers and how they frustrated teams with their passing. They are very well-coached.
