Who is staying - Who is leaving - Confirmed Reports Only
There are a few threads tracking this, but they are full of speculation, hearsay, off topic conversation, Archie-Hating, and Ray Harper. Lots and lots of Ray Harper.
I thought it would be nice to have a thread free from speculation, guesses, and off topic banter. I love that stuff, but it's hard to sift through that and find confirmed reports.
I am starting this thread to be the home of CONFIRMED reports of arrivals, departures, and retention. If possible, please link to sources.
CONFIRMED DEPARTURES:
Archie Miller
Allen Griffen
http://www.syracuse.com/orangebasket...assistant.html
CONFIRMED ARRIVALS:
Anthony Grant
CONFIRMED RETENTION:
Xeyrius
Crosby
Mikesell
D Davis
http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/spo...nUlKVezOVCngI/
I only included players on record talking about next season. I have not seen anything from Cunningham or other players. Please feel free to add them if I missed them.

I feel sorry for you. The goal you set is un-achievable in today's world. But have at it if you must!

Confirmed reports only? Explains why there is only 1 post/reply so far.
What about predictive analysis? And if so, do you have to show your work?
If so, I would be interested in the predictive analysis of our Board's RamodWaleskowski, after successfully solving the mystery surrounding exactly when Josh Cunningham would return to the court. Add to that his/her prediction of Dayton missing the tournament entirely after the loss to Davidson and I feel like we can take his/her predictions as confirmed reports.

Cunningham has burned his transfer year so he can't really go anywhere until he graduates. Kostas would similarly lose a year of eligibility by transferring now. Those guys are pretty well locked in.

Actually don't think he is aloud as it is a dead period and can only meet with recruits already committed, which svobod is not. Sure he will be first one he visits when the dead period ends.

AG has a full plate and could use some help (as in assistants) but knows he must meet with each of the committed recruits before the dead period ends. Should any ask for their release then all the coaches will have a hand in getting their best shot in for decommitted recruits and transfers.
No moss growing under AG feet. Best case scenario is having assistants lined up and ready to go by weeks end and know where we stand with the committed recruits.
Feel he has his assistants lined up and ready to sign on but first things first during the dead period.
Feel good about his interest in UD and taking it to the next level building on what we have already accomplished.
As for the recruits don't think they have all that many options, its not like they are 4 star players.
Seems most recruit tweets have died down, keep an eye out one might reveal something in a day or so.

All the recruits have plenty of options. And 4 stars or not, each
are very good players that can become great players. Carter, Jordan
and Wright especially have high ceilings. If we can retain most of them,
were in solid shape moving forward.

IIRC, Michael Jordan was cut as a high school freshmen. The point being, sometimes it doesn't take too much to turn it around. JC has the talent - plenty of it, maybe he just needs different leadership; maybe he needs a coach he feels vested in.

This BS story has taken out a life of its own!
For the 1 millionth time...
As a sophomore Michael Jordan was either going to be the last varsity player or put on JV to play and develop. The coach decided it was in his best interest to play JV...so he was 'cut' from varsity so he could go down and play a ton as opposed to little/none. Michael never forgave his coach for 'cutting' him and the press has run wild with this story since.

Either way, true or not (I don't have the time to research or dispute the story, nor do I really care...), I can tell you this from personal experience---If you don't believe in your managers style, don't click with him or her, you are not going to give your best effort - and vice versa. Period. Seems all to often this season, JC looked like he was pushing to impress. And whenever he made a mistake, he was yanked. You would have thought that knowing AM was losing SS after this season, he would have spent more time developing JC....unless he suspected it didn't matter...

I hope you're right. He needs the most work of anyone for the team's success. I would bet, myself, that he's getting more work than anyone too. I tend to disagree based on his trending through last season that he will be a completely different player this year. There will be a lot more pressure without a net (Scoochie) to catch him. That high dribble has to go or he will get picked a lot.

I don't wish him to be replaced by anybody for the record. He's shown the talent. I just hope the freshman that committed follows through. But if not, there are over 6 billion on planet earth. I'm confident we'll find another quality PG to share or backup the duties at PG.

LMAO. WTH does the board's feelings actually have to with how a player actually develops/progresses? You playing Miss Cloe again in your make-believe world where you think you actually have a clue? It was posters like you that wanted Devin Oliver kicked to the curbside and probably countless other players who turned out okay..

5 give it a rest! You and a couple of others are constantly ripping John Crosby ... for what? He is a talented guy. Coaches have just not yet found how to get it out of him.
I remember when London Warren was so labeled... and it turned out the rest of the team just needed to catch up to his speed.... when posters of your ilk wanted him to slow down to the speed of the rest of the team.....
There is a reason guys like Archie and Anthony get paid what they do....

I never ripped LW. I don't rip a player unless their play warrants it. Again a statement was made that he was going to turn it around under new coaching. As if this yet-to-be-assembled staff is more adept in player development than the last.

Your comments are solid bump material - from this site, if you want to be honest. You understand these players aren't professionals, right? Did you play college BB at this level? Did you ever coach at the college level? Provide those stats please...

Congrats Flyer5, the horse is dead.
Back to the topic at hand, would be nice to have a few confirmed reports of who is coming or going. I am guessing with the recruiting dead period ending on Thursday, we will know quite a bit more by this weekend.

Not only is that post inappropriate, it is downright stupid. Right now we are worried that our only other true point guard might not be coming here and this idiot wants to get rid of the one PG we already have? Who does he want to run the point, Darrell for 40 minutes?

Please stand by there could be white smoke coming out of the chapel on campus.
All I can say is AG is working his tail end off on both recruits and assistants.
Recruits will stay quiet for now, probably till weekend when they know who the assistants are.
Not confirmed but could be one AC staying and two coming on board as early as Wednesday....Oh my gosh did I say Wednesday again, guess that means Thursday. AG wants AC on staff ready to run by weekend as dead period ends.
$hit for get off the pot time for the recruits. Need a recommit or AG and staff will be off and running to have our positions filled.

By my process of elimination that incumbent would be Kuwick since Griffin is gone and Ostrom has been strongly rumored to be sought after?

Thanks for the information. Too bad I had to sift through all of this other B.S. to get to it. This could've been a great thread if people would stick to the subject. I normally don't care about that stuff, but with the title of this particular thread it would've been nice to stick to the topic.

Ostrom is interesting as Archie has or is filling his AHC with Bruiser a position Ostrom would want, so not so sure he goes with Archie. As for other programs, yes he seems hot but would be great to keep him if at all possible.

Agreed. Bruiser is lead assistant and Miller stated he would like to get an Indiana guy as another assistant. Don't see Tom going to Indiana. His long term relationship with AG leads me to believe he may end up staying.

As I read AG I thought initially you were referring to joining Griffin at SU, TA111. Would be great to retain both, albeit unconventional how staffs are normally filled by new head coaches

This is really getting interesting, then.
Jablonski reported that XW was told by Ostrom that he'd be following Archie to IU.
Did Ostrom think he was following Archie and get the rug pulled out from under him?
Or are we just dreaming that Ostrom would stay here. Me thinks the latter...

Archie has played it close to the chest all through his coaching days and may have even fooled Ostrom into thinking he would ge the HAC at IU.
So Ostrom is waiting to see if Archie does in fact want him (you'd think AM would have made that decision by now) or if AG would want to keep him on staff.
For the what its worth department there has been no updates on the daytonflyers.com coaching situation like there is for the womens team.
Kuwick has been really quiet on his intentions, Griffin is gone as is Walsh.

It's OK that we are in a dead period. It's not illegal to have a thread open and not post in it. The hope was to save a space for confirmed updates. Not everyone has time to read all of the new posts every day. I was hoping for a spot that people can go to keep up to date on what is actually happening without having to read 100 Chuck Norris Jokes with "Ray Harper" put in place of Chuck Norris. Not saying they aren't funny...just makes it hard to find actual information buried between the jokes.
We already had several threads for discussing and debating recruiting, new coaches, etc. I love that stuff. I really do. And there are open threads for it.
Was hoping we could keep just one thread dedicated to things that are actually happening.
Wishful thinking...

It would certainly be worse.

But Ostrom told XW he was heading to IU. Do you think Ostrom would say that without having it confirmed by Archie first? I don't. I would be shocked if Ostrom doesn't end up IU. And if he doesn't, there's a heck of a story behind it.
Keep in mind also that Ostrom interviewed for the HC position here at UD. Just my opinion, but I don't think he would stick around and be an assistant for a job he did not land - no matter how good of friends he is with the person that did get the job.
With all of that said, I would be elated if Tom stays with UD. I just don't see it happening.

Does anyone know if Svoboda speaks English? This is probably a pretty difficult situation to get your head around if it is all being translated.

I don't know if Indiana is required to wait a certain time period before announcing a decision due to state laws about posting and keeping open positions for a set period, but if not, I'm surprised Archie hasn't named his staff by this point. If Bruiser is indeed his lead assistant, where does that leave Ostrom or Kuwik?

He does. You can google him and see a few interviews.

Keep in mind also that Ostrom interviewed for the HC position here at UD. Just my opinion, but I don't think he would stick around and be an assistant for a job they did not land - no matter how good of friends he is with the person that did get the job.
With all of that said, I would be elated if Tom stays with UD. I just don't see it happening.

I thought I read somewhere, I think on here, that what XW said was an April Fool's comment.

No idea, but I would guess he speaks it at least somewhat well. Many European schools require students to take English classes (some even take a 3rd language) as English is the universal language of business and spoken all around the world. All that said, I can't imagine its all that difficult a situation for him to get his head around, he committed to a school and a coach, that coach left for another school. The only question is where does UD stand on accepting a LOI from him once he is eligible to sign and what are his other options.
I hope, for no other reason than its the right thing to do, that at some point, Neil or Ostrom reached out the dude and let him know where things stand and that at some point Grant has reached out to him to know where things stand more specifically.

|
Having read the Indiana boards, no one seems to think Bruiser will be the lead assistant! Remember Archie never designated a lead assistant at Dayton. Seemed to keep everyone on pretty equal footing. What Bruiser probably will be is Archie's new Allen Griffin. Heavily leaned on for game planning, strategy and a strong east coast recruiter (like Allen Griffin).
The prevailing theory over there seems to be that Groce (who is an Indiana guy) is holding things up as he is in play for Akron job. IU has told Indiana beat reporters a formal staff announcement will not be made until next week, and this could well be the reason for the delay. Much like Kevin Kuwik was leaned on for game planning and strategy as well as midwest recruiting, that would be Groce's role too.
Then Ostrom slides in as the national/international recruiting guy. The one who organizes the master recruiting matrix and who personally handles many of the top recruiting priorities, the guy who interfaces with AAU coaches, scouts international guys or national prospects outside the traditional recruiting footprint.
The difference between the Dayton and Indiana staffs of course is head coaching experience. A Miller, Groce, Bruiser, Ostrom staff would have tons of experience.
So the question for Ostrom would be: does that staff afford him the opportunity to grow and take on additional responsibilities to prepare for success in a head coaching role? The answer could be no, but it also could be yes that in he would have three head coaches to absorb info from.
Being named "associate head coach" would be nice, but if Archie can manage to win national championships at Indiana, you can make the argument that Ostrom would be set up really well for future jobs. Because if you want to hire the hot assistant from Indiana, who are you going to give an interview to? A previously fired head coach or Ostrom? Depends on what you're looking for, but Ostrom could be positioned as a homerun hire there. If AG offered Ostrom "Associate Head Coach" is that really better?

I really hate that we can not keep these threads on topic. I was comparing the 1984 team to the 2014 team and trying to determine which team was better. And which over achieved more.

Supposedly, Vandy and Georgia Tech were the other schools he was looking at. No idea what their situations are.
With him not having signed, he could go to Indiana if they wanted him.
International guys are a bit tougher to project so my guess is that Archie won't take that chance at Indiana right out of the gate.
But I think even if Ostrom is gone (and assuming they're not trying to take Svoboda) then this seems like a situation where Ostrom probably does his old friend Anthony a solid and shares his scouting report, and confidence level that Svoboda is a good fit for Dayton. Seems like Anthony might trust Tom's opinion given that they worked together for so many years at Florida.

Wouldn't it also make sense to not announce any of the assistants going to IU until after the dead period if they have intentions of poaching the recruits so that they can still speak to those recruits now as a UD AC?

I think you would find most people in Europe, especially those that have participated in pan European and international basketball tournaments like Svboda has, speak English.

The thought occurred to me, yes. It's a perfectly reasonable conspiracy theory. If recruits and Archie's assistant coaches both end up in the same place, I think this will be a popular one. That won't mean it actually happened. But it could be hard to disprove too.

Poignant post. Until the dead period ends at noon Thursday, the only coaches on the planet who can legally talk to our signees are those currently employed by UD. After noon Thursday, only UD coaches can talk to our signees, unless they are released from their NLI.

wouldn't it make sense, that if you were not going to retain one (or all) of Archie's assistants, that you would have released them from their contract by now? I'm sure there are "escape clauses" in their contracts that allow for termination under the current scenario.

Interesting. Definitely impacts Archie's staffing if rumors are true Groce would have ended up at IU if not for Akron. And there could be a domino effect as it relates to coaches and even players who might try to move from Dayton to Indiana. But it's really hard to speculate as to what exactly the impact of this move will be, if any, as it relates to Dayton.

Only two I see that could go to IU is Wright and Svoboda. My IU friend says UU can do better than mid major recruits. Expecting bigger things from Archie. Already on the seat...will he keep it from getting to warm. Impatient fans there

Sounds like Mr. Anonymous is the one with thin skin.
Mr. Anonymous - I know for a fact the players read most of our posts. I've heard it straight from them and the assistant coaches. I should congratulate you on receiving the first red pip I've ever given (and I signed it too).

OMG, I got one too, said I should "grow up" for suggesting threads stay at least somewhat on topic. OH NO, I'm so upset. If I knew who did it I'd have a witty response like, "no, you grow up," but this person didn't leave a name so I can't respond.
Back to the thread, sorry for the digression.

Only think I know is that so far, several recruits still have Dayton commit in their Twitter bio, Wright does not. Don't know that it means anything either way. Hoping for ACs shortly as said above, dead period ends shortly and if we need to be on a mad scramble, gotta hit the ground running with either uncommitted/decommitted or transfers. Hopefully info coming soon.
Man, November is a long way away.
