Unbelievable performance...Hands down...All over the floor...aggressive and took it to the rim. Extremely impressed and what a gold nugget Archie got.

Spuds, Mikesell's nickname should be Spuds, like yours. Besides the potato chip connection, it could stand for Super Prime UD Shooter.

Archie on Mikesell: from meet the flyers thread:
"I spent a good deal of the summer away in June while our freshman were entering the campus while our assistants were working them out. There was one name that kept coming back to me while I was gone. The most surprising, the most impressive, the most consistent guy that we had of the new guys was Ryan Mikesell. I was anxious to return and get my own eyes on those guys. The first thing I quickly noticed is you’re dealing with a highly-competitive young kid, a guy that plays the right way for the right reasons, whether it was a one-on-one game or whether he was competing in shooting drills. I love to see that. He’s not afraid. He doesn’t back down at all. He’s got a toughness about him. When you have those type of attributes as a young player, before you know anything, you’re off to a good start. I couldn’t be happier about his development.”

The competitiveness AM was referring to shined through to me when he missed a Free Throw, as soon as he let it go, you can here him groan "oh no". I can tell this guy is going to bring the fire every game.

In his first game he looked like a heady upper-classman to me. He found open spots inside and out in the offense. Though his three-point shooting will draw the attention, the young man played a very good floor game and was very active in the post on both ends. Yes he was all over. He has a knack for defending (swatting) the ball in the post with quick hands. I like him a lot. His movement without the ball was very un-freshman-like tonight. It served to get him some wide open shots. He's a scrapper who has a well-rounded game. Couple cheap reach-in fouls but he has quick hands and he'll get some deflections that lead to steals I feel. Has good shooting form and all his misses were close. If I had to make a comparison I couldnt, but I think I saw a little Jimmy Paxson in him while he was moving in the offense.

Reminds me of another 33 ... Brooks Hall. I watched Mikesell warmup and commented to the wife what a good looking shooter he is with a really quick release. However he has a well rounded game. The other freshman that got my attention is that Williams is a very good defender.

Wow, what an impressive debut.
He has a quick, high release, similar to Fabriuzius's shot, but he is soo much quicker and more athletic. When he puts on some more bulk as long as he keeps his quickness and if tonight wasn't just a flash in the pan shooting wise, he is going to be a very, very good player.
He is a basketball player, and an all round one at that.
I wasn't expecting much from him but he was by far the most impressive of all the freshmen, including Steve, at least tonight.

In other news, Kyle Ahrens played 6 minutes for Michigan State and got 2 rebounds, with zero points and 2 turnovers.
I know it's only one game, but... I think we might've got the better of those two who were fighting for best player in the Midwest Athletic.
Also reminded me of Darrell Davis, who was leading scorer in our season opener last year as a true freshman.

The kid is so much more than a 3 point specialist... The way he went after rebounds and loose balls was incredible. He's a baller. I was very skeptical when we first signed him, but am now very excited about his prospects as a Flyer.

This is exactly what I told my wife. "This is the second coming of Jim Paxson"!
It's the movement without the ball that you just don't see nowadays. One thing I remember about Paxson was how often he lost his man for easy lay ups- and we saw that at least once tonight. Craftiness. Did not look look like a freshman at all.

Now that is a great hoops moniker! It could be just as fun as the 'Scooooooochie effect' is, vocally, for the fans! Gets my vote. Groovy Mikesell.
I just knew some would draw the Pax comparison. I'm still glad I stopped short. Flyers royalty, bros. And I'm not talking fake royalty

I think that he attended UD's bball camp although he was putting up some serious stats in HS. He was on an Ohio all star team. He signed not long after bball camp when UD offered.
If he is indeed a combination of Brooks Hall and Jim Paxson he will be a GREAT player
Here is an old article describing his thoughts on signing with UD
http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/...s-to-ud/ngY4W/
By David Jablonski
Staff Writer
DAYTON —
St. Henry High School senior Ryan Mikesell comes from a family of Dayton grads. Two of his uncles graduated from UD, and he calls them “UD nuts.” Another uncle has season tickets.
Mikesell also grew up knowing the name Kurt Huelsman, a St. Henry star who played at UD from 2006-10. Mikesell himself has been going to games at UD Arena as long as he can remember.
It wasn’t a hard choice for the 6-foot-7 forward to pick the Flyers. He verbally committed to the men’s basketball program Thursday, joining Xeyrius Williams, of Wayne, in a so-far locally-dominated class of 2015. Both are playing for All-Ohio Black, an AAU team, this summer.
Mikesell said playing close to home was definitely important.
“That means a lot to my family and myself that they can come and watch most of the games,” Mikesell said. “I thought it was the perfect fit for myself. It’s a great school obviously and a great basketball community, and they get tons of community support.”

One of the best things I saw in the exhibition game was when Mikesell (it might have actually been Miller, all those white kids look the same ) missed a shot from the elbow and as soon as it left his hand he FOLLOWED HIS SHOT. It's a lost art. Instead of an easy defensive rebound it led to a scrum and UD ended up with the ball. 1 more possession could be the difference between a Sweet 16 and a first round exit.
Whether it was Miller or Mikesell, the point is, AM is signing kids that play the game smart, and play the right way.

it's only one game so I don't want to get too high on him. But my favorite par tof his 21 points is that he was efficient. He scored 21 points on 7-9 shooting. Its not like he was pressing to get those 21 it came within the offense and I actually thought he passed up a couple of 3's.
Also from what I've seen so far he thinks like an upperclassman. The cuts he makes and the basketball IQ is far superior to what you typically see in a freshman. One of the 3's in the post-game highlights is him making a cross court pass to scoochie against a zone. Scoochie catches it no dribbles goes cross court pass right back to mikesell and mikesell makes the 3.
Its only one game but its hard not to get excited about this guy.

Contrast Mikesell with Crosby, who was advertised as the stud. Crosby is very fast and athletic, but struggles seeing the floor and grasping the game flow. Mikesell constantly sees the entire floor, and although only of average D1 athletic ability, is very quick with his eyes and his decisions. Hopefully both turn out great, but for right now Mikesell is light years ahead.

Looking back at Scoochie's frosh year, I must have posted a half dozen times in game threads that "he has to learn how to finish." Fast forward: lesson learned.
Give Crosby time. He needs to slow down rather than speed up--he's plenty fast already.

Knew this kid would be good, just not sure how good.
It's still early and not sure SEMO was a very good opponent. But if this kid can shoot 4 for 8 each game, thats some shooting to make up for Jordan Sibert
If he can score 12 to 15 a game in 50% of his games, and catch the boards and make the passes he's making.... well.... yes, get the Brinks Armored car to pay Mr Archie Miller!
Just think these guys only need get us like 7 and 3 till DP comes back, and
maybe better. WE've got a lot of good ball to watch!!!

The one thing to "worry" about, is that the reason Mikesell got a lot of playing time was because Kyle Davis was in foul trouble the entire game. Kyle went out at like the 16 minute mark in the first half with 2 fouls, and Mikesell came in. Kyle came back in late in the first half, and picked up a 3rd foul. Again, Mikesell came to the rescue.
My +/- had Mikesell in for 25:41 and Kyle in for 15:23. Some overlap there, but most of the time was a direct substitution.
But, Mikesells good game could help his future out.
But, Kyle Davis' defense is hard to overcome.

Awesome!!!
Twice in the second half Scoochie drove towards the basket. Twice Scoochie had to pass the ball. Twice there was Mikesell waiting cross court by the 3 line who accepted the pass. Twice Mikesell had an open shot with no one around him. Twice Mikesell made a good decision to shoot. Twice (I'm sure he made it at least once) he made the basket.
Unrelated ... KP was upset, at least once, that he was pulled from the game. Last year, UD couldn't pull him out, to get his breath. Archie has more options this year. It is too early to know if they are good options. So Archie needs to play the freshman to nail down his team play.

There is a big difference between a frosh playing point and wing. But yes, Mikesell is more ready to play minutes. Has a very high basketball IQ. Agree with Sea Bass - best okay was pass to Steve. He had hit a couple and they closed out hard off Steve's screen. Ball goes inside with no hesitation.

Didn't KP look like he hurt himself a little after a play earlier in the game? He hates to come out of games but nobody in the world can blame AM for pulling him when the game is locked up. He's just too valuable to risk unnecessary injury with. KP's going to have learn that it's better he miss minutes against Southeast Missouri State than to miss whole games against Alabama.

His m-o is to drive the ball and score or get fouled. It's what KP does. Going 1-4 in his first attempts from the line surely didn't give him any momentum to build on, and as someone said, there's someone there to take your place this year.

KP can shoot FTs as well as he did last season and as long as he plays the rest of his game the way he played last season, there's nobody to take his place.
I thought his form at the FT line looked a lot better. But when you change something so drastic, it takes time get it to work. As long as his form looks better, I'm willing to wait for the payoff.

I believe I've heard Pollard has been playing with a bum ankle.
Mikesell knows where to be on the court at all times. I loved the way he runs off screens. He is a frosh, but has the mind of an upperclassmen already. He will still make some frosh mistakes, but he is a bright basketball player.

The stats I have not seen posted here yet for "magic Mike" - 4 assists, zero turnovers and 1 block. Hope to see more of the same in the future.

Back to our current players, and specifically our new ones:
-Mikesell was better than advertised. And I know he won't score like that every game, but you gotta love those intangibles.
-McElvene had some very good moments, and a few awkward ones. He'll eventually add a defensive presence unlike anything we've had in recent memory (if ever).
-Miller had some decent moments, but some "freshman" moments too. I can see him developing into a Dan Geriot-type player, but hopefully more of a force on the boards.
-Williams didn't do anything spectacularly good or spectacularly bad. In time, I can see him developing into a James Posey-type player: a Stretch 4 at the college level.
-Crosby played the most "like a freshman", dribbling into traffic and playing too out-of-control. I'm sure he'll settle down and be a solid contributor, in time.
-Cooke had a decent all-around floor game. Best comparison I can draw after 1 game is Noland Robinson. Hopefully, he'll be the kind of guy who can contribute whatever's needed from 1 game to the next,
Long story short: it's so nice to see such an abundance of guys with good hoops skills, high hoops IQs, and decent athleticism. At this point, it really feels like we're seeing a hoops renaissance at UD. Love the feeling!

It seems if Miller's game blossoms he could be a similar type player as Wally Szczerbiak was. I know that's a high ceiling but he has a similar skill set imo. I would go ahead and compare Mikesell to Luke Kennard. I didn't give them too much to shoot for did I?

Elite company to be sure, but if Archie and staff like them -- and with their track record of developing talent -- who's to say how far they might go?
It is good to be a Flyer. Good!

Ryan was a complete player in HS already. AM was able to see that. He could always shoot but he made his teammates better with his passing. he sees the floor extremely well. For those of you old enough to remember Chuck Stahl at Miami, this is his newphew. Chuck was a an extremely good player at Miami. On top of him being a great recruit for UD, he is a better person.

I think he needs to have a repeat performance against Iowa for us to have a good chance... They have a 6 and 7 man coming in that are very good tall forwards and his 3's will help keep pace... hopefully the freshman D will do the same thing

I think our template is 40 points per half, with tough defense. Those 40 can come from anybody and more than likely will be a different player each game. We have a bunch of guys who can light it up on a given day. Rebounding is the same pattern, except that Steve will have 3 or 4 drop in his lap every game because his reach is amazing. Then add the ones he actually works for and we have a potential double/double every game.
Ryan has the skills to fill up his scorecard every game in a different way. Not always points, but steals, rebounds, blocks, assists, whatever. Very smart team player.

He's very much in the mold of Chris Johnson, Brooks Hall and Dyshawn Pierre, college-ready, do-it-all skills, but Mikesell's advantage is having had more opportunity to hone his guard skills - passing and ball-handling. He might not have the attack-the-rim-explosiveness of some other athletes we have had, but a highlight reel bucket counts just the same as any other bucket.
