Mike

Has anyone heard any explanation for Mike being stuck to the bench last night? Has anyone asked Grant about it?

I posted in another thread that it looked like AG got ****ed when we got a shot clock violation in the 2nd half and Mike had the ball when the horn went off and didn't know it was about to happen. And it's true he didn't realize it, but I can tell you none of the other guys on the floor realized it either.

If I recall correctly, he got the ball with only a couple of seconds left on the shot clock and a solid step behind the 3 point line. That would be a horrible reason to bench him.

It's the old HOT POTATO game

As the shot clock winds down everyone passes the ball to someone else to avoid the ball in their hands as the buzzer sounds ...

Mike was the last guy this time. How many times has a player on the team (besides Mike) done the same or nearly the same thing?

Too Many Times Me Thinks!

Judging by his dad's twitter account, I wouldn't be shocked if Mike is ready to peace out. A real shame because I really think he can be great.

He was pulled with 15:30 to go. So it had to be early.

You're correct I was mistaken. It was actually with 4:30 left in the first half that it happened. But I still contend AG was really ****ed at him so maybe that carried over to something else AG thought he did wrong in the 2nd half, and it was the cumulative reason he sat him for the last 15+ minutes.

Mike only played 16 minutes. That should have been at least 25 minutes last night. He should have got a chunk of Amzil’s 28 minutes. What are the assistant coaches doing? Do they have a voice? Does AG have a problem listening?

Maybe he hurt himself. Grant keeps that stuff pretty close to the vest. I feel like he is likely to hit the portal. I think he and his dad have an inflated opinion of how good he is. He has a very high ceiling, but form what I have seen this year, he has a long way to go to live up to it.

It seems to me the Mike is the backup to Smith and backup to Amzil.

Now that Smith is back (thankfully), he is now on the bench behind Amzil. Is this what you see?

I was right behind the bench last night and there was zero sign that he was hurt in any way.

The coach has to play the players and line up that give you the best chance to win. I could care less about Mike’s or his Dad’s inflated ego. Play him.

....or fit his way of doing things. Keep in mind, when Mali & Elvis came in, the Pace slowed, and we faded quickly. Defensively, we faded also.

Could be a rerun of the daddy staten (Gregory's last season) or
daddy Doliboa (Purnell era).

Perhaps next time AG could "send a message" in a different way or at a different time. Say for example after the game?

I'm not saying we win if Mike isn't pulled, but we are already without Blakney, have two hobbled guards and Holmes with a rolled ankle. Does it make sense to intentionally limit your availability even further?

I'm guessing it was due to the zone not working, and when they go man-to-man Mike cannot stop the dribble drive.

Looks like Mali, Blakney, and Camara are they only one's who can stop the dribble drive - which beat us the last 2 games (maybe Elvis too).

It's not Mike's offense that limits his minutes, it's his defense (or lack thereof).

By these metrics, Camara and Amzil hurt us last night, and Mike should have played more. https://barttorvik.com/box.php?muid=...1-25&year=2023

I think daddy issues are indeed going to factor in. I would hope for Mike and his dad's sake, they are not at the Staten helicopter parenting level. I remember Cain. As I recall he wasn't very able. That's about all I remember of that guy.
The sense I get is, Mike is getting his feet wet and will move on to what they think are bigger and better things. I hope not, but it won't surprise me. We have entered the era of roster churn.

I know that he put up a very quick 3 that was not a good shot and also drove in for an off balance layup that wasn't even close from the 6 minute mark of the 1st half to the 5:30 mark and immediately came out of the game and RI came down both times and scored.I did witness both shots. Prior to that he played well so who knows what actually transpired.

I also believe he got beat bad defensively right around that time, iirc. I don't know if he played anymore in the 1st half as there is no mention of Mike in the play-by-play section on ESPN.com. There may have been some words between Mike and the coaches at some point and/or simply he wasn't doing something correctly at the start of the 2nd half.

This is also why I don't like Ag method of reporting openly about injuries. He's not honest enough and goes overboard IMHO at keeping close to the vest.

personally although mike has some shot ability he is
1) horrible on defense
2) very slow and cant get past other defenders when needed on offense.
3) does not probe on dribble toward basket like m smith does to setup the bigs for easy shots.

what if grant did not have mike on the court at end of VCU game we'd probably have won. Burea would have been a much better choice imo. Maybe and hopefully Grant will finally start M Smith at PG and use Burea to sub for him.
i maybe in minority but i am all in favor for mike sitting on bench for a long time.

somewhat true, but I don't see anyway how that has anything to do with Mike sitting for the final 15 minutes. You have to get fresh players in and keep others fresh. That was either an injury or punishment, winning be dam-ned is the AG way.

Also, if you believe that Mustapha Amzil's 2 points and 2 rebounds and 1-7 from the field and 0-4 from the 3 point line gives the Flyers a better chance of winning than what Mike was giving us before being sat, I got some swamp land I'd like to sell you.

How did AG handle Xeyrius Williams situation in year 1. It's his way or the
highway.
If the situation is similar now I don't expect a different outcome.

I think he means Brea. Either bad spelling or autocorrect out of control.

I agree, at least at this stage of his development. IMO, a major problem for UD offensively, is the inability to break down the defense with dribble penetration. This is reflected in foul shooting stats. Malachi is the only player UD has that can dribble penetrate and cause the defense to collapse.

what if grant did not have mike on the court at end of VCU game we'd probably have won. Burea would have been a much better choice imo. Maybe and hopefully Grant will finally start M Smith at PG and use Burea to sub for him.
i maybe in minority but i am all in favor for mike sitting on bench for a long time.
I'll agree that Elvis is more developed on the offensive end. But sorry, Brea and Elvis are Matadors on defense. Mali, on this board, is getting the benefit of last year. He's getting blown by in the game all the time now. There's not one guard stopping penetration right now. Mali has acknowledged he needs off season surgery already. Time to call the facts as they are, not as they were last year.

Both GW and RI took advantage of him and his limitations. I'll give him prop's for going out there and competing, but he's not at the level he was last year, and the opponents are exploiting it.

Also, if you believe that Mustapha Amzil's 2 points and 2 rebounds and 1-7 from the field and 0-4 from the 3 point line gives the Flyers a better chance of winning than what Mike was giving us before being sat, I got some swamp land I'd like to sell you.
Early in the second half we started a full court press and created a turnover right away. Why didn't we continue it and create more turnovers. We have enough guards to do that now. Wasn't that Anthony Grant and Shaka Smart who had the havoc defense at VCU? We have enough guards with fresh legs to put out there even if we had to play Brady Uhl for awhile. Who knows we may have restored our 11 point lead or maybe more! Like Smitty10 said put Mike back in the last 15 minutes for Amzil and tell him to hustle and rebound his tail end off on defense or he will be back on the bench!

I have no inside information at all, but if he's publicly criticizing the coaching in numerous tweets, it does make you wonder what all might be going on behind the scenes that we don't see. Either way, it's not a great sign that Mike will want to stick around.

I follow "The Shark" on twitter. Mostly because I enjoy having a direct connection to the Prime Minister of Mongolia. Mike's dad had one past about putting Mike at the point early in the season. One. Last game he asked why he wasn't going back in. Hardly Staten territory. This guy promotes UD basketball. If Mike bails, it's more likely because he wants to play in a different system, and I'm not convinced the old man wouldn't influence him otherwise, for one year.

The old man seems ot have his stuff together.

All the above is 100% fact! Might have been another one or two this season too if I recall, but none have had the slightest hint of anything against UD or AG. Comparisons to past trouble makers are not fair at all in this case (so far)

It's not hard to find. Usually along the lines of asking why Mike isn't playing or begging to pick up the tempo (like we all do here daily at this point).

Old Man Staten was known for showing up at practice and trying to take over said practice. No matter what, I don't see how things being posted on a public social media channel even remotely compares to that.

I've not heard one single mention of Shark doing anything like that.

I hope Mike (and Shark, unless I'm missing something somewhere above and beyond Tweeting) stick around. I think the young man has as high a ceiling as anyone on this squad.

I agree. I wonder how many fathers of Duke players criticized Coach K over the years for not playing or how they're playing their sons? This is a father who probably has NBA aspirations for their son and if dad feels that's being compromised even a little, will probably push for transfer. And this son, when asked about his early success at UD Arena said it was because he felt better with his parents there. I can't see a situation where dad says "I think you should be looking elsewhere this offseason and Mike saying, "this is my business dad, not yours".

Mike is also being documented for Mongolia this whole season. I'm sure that if there's ill will toward his basketball experience by him or his dad, it will come out pretty soon.

I would like to think Mike and his father were realistic about playing time before the beginning of the season. With the injuries, he has gotten more playing time then anyone would have thought possible. Its hard to revert back to being the backup.

OK, but I'll go the other way. Mike is performing well as a true freshman. Sounds like more than you expected. His ceiling is clearly higher than our other guards. This team will be lucky to get into any post season tournament at this point, and Mali has already said he needs off season surgery.

Why would you cut this kids minutes? What exactly are we forgoing? Up temp offense for one. His D has improved - is he Gary Payton, No, noe of our guys are. But he's better than Elvis, and Brea, and equal to Mali who's definitely slowed due to injury (but give Mali props for gutting it out).

Let's recognize where this team is, the likelihood of who is coming back, and get into the best position possible to exploit our strengths vs. force talent into a predefined system.

Just once, I want to see AG have Mike post up an opponents 6 foot guard.

This seems like it could be big mismatch but I can't remember if Mike's even done that this season

The last year Villanova won the title they did a great job of posting up their guards like Brunson

He has definitely done it at least once and actually hit a fall away jumper and got fouled for the and one. Maybe Davidson at home if I recall correctly.

Pretty sure most A-10 guards aren't built the same as the guys DaRon goes up against. But, I'm sure Mike's at a significant disadvantage night in and night out.

Let;'s looks at the two guards who get the most time from Richmond, Nelson - 5'10", 175. Roche - 6'5" 180. I guess I'm unfair - let's look at RI - Leggett 6'3" 190, Freeman 6'2" 180.

Point is, you can't just point at ONLY height OR weight. They work together. The fact that it's not being explored as an option is the issue.

I think it’s clearly a missed opportunity. They should be posting up Mike at least a couple of times every game. Take advantage of ball movement and his advantage. It’s also a part of his game that he will need to approach his ceiling. He doesn’t have a lightening quick release that would allow him to be a career 3 point shooter. He’ll have to be able to play with his back to the basket on occasion. Seems like a no brained to me.

For how to exploit Mike’s strengths while mitigating his weaknesses, the program could look back to how GW utilized a guy named Watanabe (IIRC) some years back. The guy was advertised as a Guard, with a physique that was almost identical to what Mike has now. When I first saw “6’8”, 190 pound Guard”, I said “WTF??”, but whatever they did, the guy’s playing professionally now.

So I read them. I just want to clarify for everyone, since it is a pain in the butt for anyone to read thru all those tweets, most not on UD basketball, or not in English. None say anything negative about the program, the coach or other players. Many say nice things about his son and other players. A few say things similar to numerous comments on UDPride, "like we need to play faster".

I like this guy, as he supports his son and the program. To degrade him, or compare him to Staten's dad is very unfair.

If I missed something, please give the exact Tweet.

of course, in the case of Xeyrius: he was seen on the bench joking

Mike's dad has deleted some of his tweets that expressed his frustrations shortly after posting them. You are correct he is not anywhere near Billy Staten status.

Mike actually did that one time i think it was on an ATO play and iirc vs davidson game here when f loyer was guarding him. i think ATO's are one of grants strengths actually several backdoor cuts have gotten us a score on ATOs. if he's got a smaller guard on him clear out and let mike post up.

Uncalled for. Fortunately, the moron received well over a dozen rebuttals and rebukes to his criticism of Mike. The kid’s 18 and still growing and learning. He ain’t Magic Johnson, but he has a great future in the game.

Also, saw Shark on the concourse at yesterday’s game. A lot of smiles and fist bumps. Hopefully, those actions speak a heluva lot louder than a few clowns’ words.

I agree. Unfortunately, this is what the kids deal with. I'm glad it's getting push back. Can't help if this is also some of what AG eluded to in his post game comments a few games ago.

Mike's learning how to play D1 ball and figuring out how he fits in. I like his skill sets on offense, needs to sharpen up on D. He gets caught watching quite a lot. Fun player too watch and if he continues to develop he's going to be quite weapon. One thing I'd like to see less of is less antics with refs, but that's just my opinion. If you're focused on what just happened, then you're already a step behind. He's got to learn to let it go and get refocused.

Not that it changes much, but I am pretty sure Mike is 20, not 18.

Hello, my name is Chris Halterbug. I am a giant man baby and my emotional maturity level is that of a 10 year old. Now hold my beer while I prove what an insecure man-child I am on Twitter. Unfortunately, if you are in sprots these days this is the nonsense you must learn to deal with.

The irony is this nut job's bio about being a proud father of five. Imagine his reaction if one of those kids gets his kind of treatment.

As I am sure we all know, children are little impersonators and the people they people they impersonate the most are their parents. That's why, at least in my opinion, it's important to set a good example for the youth even if you don't have kids or yours are grown.

You’re exactly right Jack. I follow Shark on Twitter and he’s a standup guy, and an ambassador to the University. He’s been living in the states and has been at every game, including tournaments. The Staten comparison is ridiculous.

If that’s true, then it means at least 1 of their fans isn’t happy enough that they re-sold their soul to Satan to get their old coach back and return to the Top 25, he needs to f*** with a program that his team has only played once in the past decade. A sad, little man.

That also explains why, when discussing other religiously affiliated universities in the Midwest, my late Aunt (UD, ‘52) used to say, “They’re not Catholic, they’re Jesuit!”

Starting Mike alongside Mali to me would be ideal. . He's more of a catch and shoot shooter than Elvis. And gives us a better kickout option than Elvis.

Perfect floor balancer.

Blakeny and Elvis a little similar in that they dribble drive more and clog the middle. But AG gets stuck in grade/seniority thinking, rather than what's best imo
