Did UD ever play in Hara Arena?!

Was thinking about all the iconic arenas in Ohio the UD Flyers
Have played and was wondering about Hara… I know
Hara hosted some high school games. Did they ever host
UD?? Perhaps in a NiT game. I saw a lot of Dayton Gems and Dynamo
Games there. And hulk hogan in the WWF.

Absolutely.

Hara area was THE PLACE for rock & roll concerts. Saw so many great bands there it's amazing.

Dayton Gem 10 cent beer nights weren't too bad either, other than had to get up and go to school the next morning.

I will agree that Hara is iconic. Saw my first concert there. It was The Cars in 1982. I was in 10th grade, it was amazing. I remember going to Ice Capades with my parents. It was the place for hockey. When the Bombers moved to the Nutt House it just wasn't the same. Many people around here have fond memories of that place. It is a shame that a family squabble brought about its demise. I was at the last home show they had there in I think it was 2017. It was in the Ball Arena. It was literally falling apart. It was sad to see.

Rarely missed a rock concert from about 1985 to 1990. What Happens at HARA stays at HARA!

Became a Hockey fan as a kid watching the Gems in the late 1970's. Bombers were a blast at HARA, agree the move to Nutter ruined Bombers hockey for me. Caught a few Ice Bandits games and thinking one other minor league team tried to make a go of it at HARA as well but can not recall the name.

Was there ever a concert (and even a few hockey games) where the toilets did not get clogged resulting in $2 beers and **** all over the floors?

My boys played hockey at Hara in the final days. It definitely lost its charm, but I can still remember going to Gems games. I went as a kid in the 70’s and to the Bombers games as an adult (kinda) in my 20’s. Loved the place.

Years ago back in NJ saw a few TV broadcasts of Roller Derby events with a ladies derby team from Dayton. They had a track setup somewhere inside Hara.

Does anyone remember that?

For a while (late 60's-early 70's) there was a revival of a Roller Derby circuit that was centered I think on the east coast and obviously some teams in the Midwest such as Dayton.

Played Hockey there in early to mid 60s. Went to lots of home shows there prior to that due to my Dad's business. And then about 73, started going to any concert I had the time and money for. J. Giles, Doobies, Aerosmith, Bob Seger, Jefferson Starship, Frank Zappa, Grand Funk, Robin Trower, Uriah Heep and many more. But the best place to go for a concert was The Palace downtown. They had lots of iconic groups right before they became well known. And the acoustics were much better. Kiss, Kansas and Queen played back to back to back if I remember correctly. Others included Styx, Frampton, Skynyrd, Aerosmith, BTO, Seger also played there before his fame skyrocketed and many more. Jackson Browne was there after he became well known somewhere between "Late for the Sky" and Running on Empty".

Says the Palace Theatre was on 5th street. That I guess was before my time. Did they move to what was Loews theatre after or was that just some other ownership using "The Palace" with no connection?

I looked it up and the Loews became The Palace in 1972..

How can you think of Hara without mentioning Bill Goodman's Annual Gun and Knife show where you can stock up on your favorite AK 47 or switchblade.

The Palace on W 5th St. was in what is now the Wright-Dunbar Historic District. It was torn down as part of the rehab of that neighborhood. Back in the day, that was a very lively business district. Lots of famous people like Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington performed there. In the early 1970's it was renamed the Ghetto Palace and was used for religious services. Lowes Theater in downtown was renamed the Palace about that same time and had the rock shows. It's confusing.

Basketball court

I remember going to HARA in 1986 (give or take a year) and seeing future Dayton Flyer Troy McCracken playing in the OHSAA sectional tournament. The court was the old court from the Philadelphia 76'ers and still had the 76'ers logo on it. My cousin held Troy in check throughout the game.

EDIT- Was this at HARA or Hobart? Starting to second guess myself, just know it was one of the old places that I had watched hockey in.

I played a high school tourney game at Hara , approximately 1981. I do not think UD ever played there.

Remember bootleg albums? This was one from you get from The Who. It was recorded at Hara on 8/13/1971. They play just about all the songs from Who's Next which was still a couple of weeks from being released.

I am 99.9% sure the answer is no. I have the book, "The Dayton Flyers," by Ritter Collett. It's a history of the Flyers written in 1989. It's been a while since I read it, but I don't recall any mention of playing at Hara. As a side note, my copy is signed by Jim Paxson Sr. How 'bout that?

I think the answer is no . . . the UD club hockey team used to play in a facility next to Hara. Pretty decent team . . . mostly guys from Detroit and Canada. The name Dennis Hogan comes to mind. Chip Bok was pretty decent too . . . father was a doc in town and team doctor for the Flyers. Bok had a long career as a political cartoonist.

Concerts I remember from the '70-'71 era . . . Chicago, Neil Diamond and Jethro Tull. Spring of '71, Guess Who cancelled out at the last minute.

Kind of.

The Cincinnati Reds put together a traveling team in the winter that played Basketball against different kind of other teams for charity. Bobby Tolan tore his achilles tendon playing in it prior to the 1971 reds season and was never the same. Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Jim Maloney, Jimmy Stewart, maybe Lee May were some of them.

They came to Hara Arena and played a group of former Flyers and Dayton media personalities. I hounded my parents to take me and they did. I believe Bobby Hooper, Don Meineke, maybe May and Obrovac and Uhl(I believe most of who I listed were there and I'm sure others that I've forgotten) and some others that were stars before my time but I knew of very well. Also Phil Donahue also played with them along with other local media personalities. Steve Kirk maybe and those types.

The Reds team I don't think lost a game until that night. I was a huge Reds fan and a huge Flyers Fan and back then I believe more so Reds. But I rooted for the Flyers/Dayton media group hard.

Even though I was rooting for the Flyer team, the most fun and memorable part was watching Pete Rose play basketball. He played it with the same hustle and fierceness as he played baseball. And since baseball is such a slow game compared to basketball, you can imagine how that translated.

Here's a couple links that contain some Reds basketball team photos.

Good start. In addition to many on your list, I saw Judas Priest, 38 special, Kiss, Def Leppard, Scorpions, Dokken, Jimmy Page and The Firm

#truth. Hara was to Dayton as The Gardens was to Cincy. And, as an old friend once described The Gardens: “This place looks and smells like a bachelor party!”

It got worn down but Hara saw a lot of legends. And their security let the crowd pretty
much do whatever. I know a buddy that got a blow job during a smashing pumpkins show.
That would never happen in the arena unless it was in a RR stall

Huge Elton John Fan. Never heard of Elton playing anywhere in the Dayton area except the Nutter Center. Was it between 70-73?

First concert was at Hara. Van Halen. Also saw Ted Nugent, Ozzy (right after Randy Rhodes died), and Def Leppard. Seems like shortly thereafter, a lot of the bands shifted to UD Arena or the Nutter center. I saw Rush at UD and at the Nutter. Someone above asked another poster if they liked Rush. Lol, I saw them 24 times.

One time, they were playing at Pine Knob amphitheater in Michigan. I couldn't go because my wife's friend was getting married and we had to attend. But the wedding and reception were also at Pine Knob, at a different part of the area. After the show started, I just walked outside the reception hall and could hear the concert pretty well. When we left, the road that we took as an exit was just on the other side of a row of trees that separated where the amphitheater was, so we pulled into a gravel lot and sat there listening for another 30 minutes until a cop showed up and made us leave. I think that's the only show they were in town that I missed.

The haze of cigarette smoke at intermission of hockey games...dollar beer night...fights in the stands...post-game beers in the Pub...girls from the Flamingo hanging out in the press box lounge with carpet on the walls during Toughman...tractor pulls...

My last event there was Godsmack and Breaking Benjamin. I miss that place dearly. Such a dump, but such a good time.

That haze of cigarette smoke at the hockey games turned into a haze of a different kind of smoke at the concerts. But actually, cleared up a little during intermissions(between performers)

I forgot 50%....Flyman has a great list.

If you sat against the back wall center on, and there was a tune with a heavy bass drum beat, it was amazing. I thought my chest was going to explode when Foreign went into Starrider.

So is mine!

That website is not accurate. I don't know about Elton, Rod and Deep Purple, but I do know in early to mid November, 1974, I attended a concert there that my memory tells me was Aerosmith. I know I attended at that time because a tragic event happened to 2 girls the next morning that I had run into at the concert. I know it wasn't Zappa and Trower because I'm pretty sure the tragic event happened earlier in November and also I've seen Zappa only once and it was at least 1975 or later.

Looking through that Hara concert history site, I remembered a concert I went to in 1973. Linda Ronstadt opened for Humble Pie. The crowd booed her. She stated afterward she would never play in Dayton again. I believe she kept to her word. I also remember reading a story (not at Hara) where an unknown Jimmy Hendrix backed up the Monkees and got booed off the stage. Those same people that booed probably brag today about how they saw Hendrix in concert.

The list of concerts is missing many shows from the mid and late 1980's.

It's missing lots. During the 70s, they had a concert there probably every 2 weeks it seemed. And I also remember Bob Seger backing up some one back then(around 1977) but for the life of me I can't remember who. I was thinking it was Ten Years After but they weren't active then.

This thread has to be one of the most enjoyable during the season. Brings back so many memories of great rock n roll, and good times.
