Bucky Bockhorn Influence

Interesting article in today’s DDN about Bucky.

Anthony Grant sought out Bucky after the game and they had a long discussion. Bucky attends just about every practice still. Hopefully, he gave Anthony some insight. According to the article, Bucky gave the coach his thoughts.

Also, after the game, Anthony’s interview was terse. He was clearly not happy.

When you see the team stats. it's brutal.

However i do believe Crosby has been on positive uptick, so his loss hurt this team.

Also still would like to know what's happening with X Williams!

I don’t know that Crosby would have changed the outcome, but he could have helped. This team has more deficiencies than I could have imagined, but perhaps the most glaring is its inability to get to the rim. Last year, Scoochie, Charles, Kendal and even Kyle could drive the ball, with varying degrees of effectiveness, Charles was probably the best at creating his own shot. This year, only Darrell and Crosby have that ability, and neither is particularly good at finishing. We struggle getting the ball into the post, where Josh can do some damage, in large part because we can’t penetrate. It allows defenses to clog the middle and forces us into a lot of contested threes, and our shooting percentage from downtown is spotty at best and anemic at worst. Maybe Jordan Davis can develop into a penetrator, but he’s pretty much just a spot-up shooter at this point. I’m not giving Anthony Grant a pass — his substitution patterns alone have me scratching my head — but I have to believe he recognizes this team’s talent limitations. He’ll recruit with the purpose of filling the holes.

I'd love to see a Bucky statue in front of the Arena someday...hopefully soon.

I agree with Fly. Most of our 3pt shots are not generated from inside-out penetration. They are hoisted from a perimeter pass which is not in a shooting pocket.

Keep in mind every ball handler not named Jalen Crutcher was evaluated, recruited, and signed by the prior coach. And Crutcher is only here as a last minute addition when Wright bailed. Wasn't like AG had 3yrs to recruit a PG from their soph year. All things considered we were fortunate to get him at the 11th hour.

Very lucky to have signed him so late in the process. And he’s a quality PG. AG is still feeling out this team. If somehow UD got to the dance via the A10 tourney- AG would be an easy COY

Crutcher has potential, but his body is not ready for this level of play. He’s too skinny and lacks strength. Against Duquesne, he had zero ability to fight through screens, almost always resulting in a defensive switch that led to matchup issues time and again. The Dukes were smart enough to exploit this. He’ll get better, but his potential is tied to the weight room.

I agree about the weight room, but that won't fix Jalen's 3 point release. He just flings the ball at the rim. Muscle won't help that.

Darrell and Jordan are the only 3 point shooters that keep us from shooting 3's under 25% as a team. That is pathetic. Whatever it is that we are running for an offense contributes to a lot of last second shot clock heaves at bucket, and Jalen is the worst.

But this team's challenges are like a tub of balloons. Push one issue down and another immediately pops up. Unfortunately there are few quick fixes.

What we have a right to expect is incremental progress. Leading 61-60 was acceptable. The way we finished in Pittsburgh was not. But shame on us if we lose the same way again.

i'm almost giving up on X williams. He's obviously hurt. Our immediate future then relies on 5 guys.

1 and 2) DD and Cunningham. They will carry the bulk of responsibility and scoring
3) Crosby - how well he plays (and "Crutch") will determine how many games we are "in" -capable of winning
4) JOrdan Davis - reliable, spot up , mostly consistent 8 and 4 or 9 and 5 guy.
5) The big X factor is then Trey Landers. If he can get us 12 points and some consistent inside presence, driving and/or dishing- that'll help a lot

*6) and not counting on him is Kostas. Not saying anything more, as there is little reliabliltiy shown thus far

Used to count on 'getting healthy' against the Dukes. Looks like Dambrot might have that program on the rise as well.
