Additionally, with the new rule, 100% of players were eligible to transfer without sitting out upon its implementation. With each transfer, that number dwindles since it only allows for one transfer (at least for now).

I’m guessing/hoping it’s the latter. I mean, if the guy is coming from a P5+ program, then I’d guess he was probably recruited pretty hard coming out of high/prep school.

6'5" PG/SG out of Carmel Ind via Southern California Prep.
Top 40 recruit on both Rivals and ESPN
Looks super athletic, not sure about shot, they didn't show many mid range or long range shots, but can definitely attack the rim.

"What he’s looking for in a school: “Somewhere that’s going to give me an opportunity, a program that’s going to help me on and off the court and somewhere that lets guards play and make plays instead of just running plays.”

Also to clarify, since this is in the transfer portal, I believe he is a HS senior that backed out of his commtiment to Providence when Ed Cooley left for G'town. I don't think he is a transfer, is that correct?

liked what I heard in some of his answers:
he said he is looking to pass first and
wants some of his offense to come from
his defense... Said he will do whatever
the coach will ask him too

A shooting guard who would have two years left. He struggled shooting the three (26%), but is known as a good shooter.
"During this past season, Melendez started 18 of his 32 games played, averaging 6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists while shooting 37.6% from the floor.
He also faced a midseason suspension for “violation of team rules” according to head coach Brad Underwood, resulting in Melendez missing the Feb. 11 game against Rutgers.

@AndyWittry
Here’s how collectives approach men’s basketball’s first transfer portal window.
- Players might meet with a collective while on a visit
- High end of offers is reportedly ~$800,000
- Collectives not involved in recruiting still face fundraising pressure

If we recruited every player suggested by posters, we would have a 65 man roster, and could activate based on opponent. If we leave it up to the coaches, we could have 12 to 13 quality people who fit both the university and the team.

Wasn't Chris Johnson not highly rated or looked at by many of the better programs either, or does my Friday night memory suck?

Have I missed something? Have any of our former players that entered the portal from this last season found a new team?

Not yet (or nothing announced). Saw some pictures where Amzil was in LA and this week in Miami, presumably on visits because both U Miami and UCLA had reached out to him according to twitter.
Also heard that RJ was looking to stay on the east coast closer to family.
Mike's name doesn't show on the portal lists I have seen.

If nothing has happened with the second visit last weekend, I suppose that likely means nothing is going to? Do we know if there are any upcoming visits (even if names can't/won't be shared)?

My memory has him as a 2 star recruit. He wasn’t here long before it was clear he was better than his ranking. Once he developed his outside shot he was NBA worthy.

I believe this right on him being a 2 Star
Paul Williams I think was the highest rated recruit in that class

I sincerely hope Amzil and RJ find a program were they can finish their degrees and they advance their basketball endeavors. In Mike’s case I have to say I feel a little differently. I first feel sorry for the young man. He’s not calling the shots. That is probably the culture of his homeland so it might not be as “bad” as I think it is to not be able to make decisions about your future at his age. Aside from that, I think he is getting bad advise. Will one or two NBA teams bring him in for a practice workout? Probably. And we will never know, but I doubt they are calling his agent. It’s probably the agent calling around and maybe even asking for a favor or two. Mike has talent. It’s just not at the level his dad seems to think and it appears his dad is yell-bent on Mike playing point guard. I wish Mike well too. I hope he finds a new program. I’m just very surprised he isn’t in the portal yet, but I think that’s a big clue as to his dad’s expectations, right or wrong.

I thought Mike was in a great position here at UD to do just what he wants to do. At his height, if he can prove he's an NBA-caliber point guard he'll get a lot of attention. If he'd play 3 years here, I think he'd get the opportunity to play PG if he can do it. Then go pro early if he's ready. He's not ready now. If he tries to move up to a higher profile school, it's unlikely he'd get that opportunity. He'd be a SF forever, and likely buried on the bench. Maybe he'll flourish in a pro league overseas. (?)
Good luck to him.

School is DII. Won something like 27 games. Kid is a super athlete, 6-7, long arms, averaged about 16 a game. Shot better than 50% from the field last two seasons; only 30% from three (but over 40% previous year). Has some high major interest.

I watched all of his you tube videos. He has great footwork, is tremendous going downhill to the basket and when he dunks his head almost comes up to rim! It's no wonder there are 33 Div. 1 schools that have contacted him.

If “the college experience” is important to our visitor(s), then yesterday was a great day for a visit. The wife and I drove past campus yesterday, and the joint was hopping, with students out on foot everywhere.

Maybe, but I understand where they’re coming from. Given, all kids deserve a chance to have a good college basketball experience (and I chose those last 3 words carefully), but I agree with whichever coach said that he made a fair amount of mistakes as a 19 year old, and that the current system almost encourages today’s players to make the mistakes rather than avoid them.
Given, the pendulum had probably been too far in a direction that penalized the players. But now, it’s too far in a direction that penalizes the college hoops programs, and even though these were B1G coaches b!tching about The Portal, the schools that stand to lose the most are the ones whose recruiting budgets are the lowest.
Until the pendulum swings back, recruiting could become more like a Broadway Casting Call, where the “applicant” had better be good to begin with, or he won’t have a spot on any team. Player development could very likely be less of a focus, and the motto could well resemble that of the late Al Davis: “Just win, Baby.” I’m not sure that’s in the best interests of the sport.

A couple of ideas to rein in the madness:
* Players can only transfer without sitting out after their second year, but that's it. By then, players have an idea about whether they're going to get to have a significant role in a program. Freshman and juniors can transfer, but they'd have to sit out a year as in the past.
* Or... put a minutes clause in recruiting contracts. Players can transfer without sitting out if they didn't get the number of minutes specified in the contract. Or, instead of making it a recruiting bargaining chip, just make it a blanket number. Anyone playing less than 8mpg can transfer without sitting out.

If coaches can leave whenever they want, even after great success, why limit the players?

We are talking a bit apples and oranges, since coaches are employees and players are scholarship students.
Coaches can be limited with contract clauses, such as buy outs and where they are allowed to take a job.

Players are given scholarships one year at a time. They can be dropped easily. Witness St. John’s. I am certain UD has told players to getting packing, but you will never hear that publicly.
We complain about player loyalty but it has not been a two way street for quite some time.

There is no pendulum that is going to swing back here. Just a US Supreme Court opinion that says, you can't profit off someone else's labor, name and likeness and while not allowing them to benefit, because you know...slavery. I get that alot of people hate and are going to continue to hate what this is doing to college basketball, and you can count me in that number, but the alternative, (making kids enrich others while not being able to profit themselves), is untenable.
We may as well get used to it folks, because it is not going to change.

There is a pendulum that can swing. It is call rules. Right now there are few, and fewer enforced for NIL and tampering, and some could be changed for transfers.
Things will change if enough schools get upset.

I guess you could make rules but kids would have to voluntarily agree to them and why would they do that? If your boss came to you and said,"it will be better for the organization in the long run if you agree to work for free." Would you? Of course not.
The big schools will never agree to more rules and/or beefed up enforcement and they are the ones with all the power because if you try to thrust it on them, they will leave. I am not sure that is ultimately the wrong answer. I have never understood why sports are coupled to education beyond high school when there are billions of dollars on the table. I am not saying I want that top happen but I think that is where this is headed.

My issue with the new landscape is players are treated much like employees capable of earning a living, but still treated as amateurs based on employment terms.
If athletes are now allowed to profit off of their marketable skills while in college, coaches should be able to fire those same athletes at-will for lack of performance...just like in the rest of the business world. You miss too many free throws vs. VCU, you're gone on Monday.
Right now the athletes have the best of both worlds: financial marketability and guaranteed employment on one year renewable scholarships. In the private sector if you F up the big Dombrowski account, you're told to clear your desk the same day.

They're not that unlike professional sports contracts, though. Many NBA players sign a multi-year contract.

I think if the schools were paying the kids, I might agree more. Even if you consider the scholarship payment an employment contract generally requires the payment of the salary for the term of the contract unless the employee breaches it. In any event I don’t really think the athletes are getting the best of anything given they are not sharing in the billions (not in a meaningful way). I think the NIL, basically saying a kid can get what they can get on the private market, was probably the least that could have been done. Is it fundamentally changing basketball, yes. For the better, probably not. I just don’t see a way past a person being able to freely contract with another person for the use of their own name, image and likeness when the schools and the NCAA profit off it.

Some on here will not like that he didn’t produce enough in his freshman year but looking at the video he seems like a good prospect. Not everyone is going to come in with a 15ppg/7rpg stat line. He appears to have good footwork and his frame looks like it could add weight/strength. If Holmes returns he could develop next year and potentially be a replacement.

I know nothing of that Buffalo transfer; I've never seen him play and couldn't describe a thing about him, however just looking at that stat line, 16 mpg, 5.6 ppg and 4.2 rpg as a Frosh in the MAC tells me there is potential there. I would not scoff at those numbers had UD had a frosh big with those numbers last season.

Looks big and fairly agile in that video.
He wouldn't be a one-for-one replacement for Holmes, but I suspect he'd be an above average A10 big from day one. With a couple years, I think Grant may be able to develop him into an all conference type player.
Given the state of the roster, he'd be a great addition.

Don't get me wrong, potential is there, but what about him make you think he will be above average in the A10 from day one? The guy was average at best in the MAC. The reason he did not play much is because he fouls at a very high rate. Won't be above average in the A10 until he gets that under control.

Obviously a highlight clip is going to show his good side, but it does look like he has very good hands and good footwork, which I think are the two biggest skills needed to develop into a solid post player.

It would be nice to get Ven-Allen Lubin in for a campus visit. At 6'8" and 225lbs. he would be a good replacement for Camara. He blocks shots and seems to put the same premium on defense as Toumani. Last season for Notre Dame he shot 58% which is only one percentage point less than Holmes! However, he is not a three point shooter. In limited playing time as a four star freshman he was only 1 for 9 but maybe he could improve like Obi did!

I worry about adding too many dudes without a shot.
Grant's offense was at its best when Obi was playing the 5.
Obviously, there were many other factors that made that offense a success, but I fear when Grant has a conventional big, he runs a conventional offense that lacks spacing, limits driving and curtails fluidity. I find this especially concerning giving the direction the game is going.

The efficiency of the offense with Obi was more than Obi. AG had a collection of basketball savvy, experienced guys. Commentators mentioned that it was the most NBA like offense in college ball. They also mentioned that it was an extremely difficult offense to run. I get the feeling that Obi’s crew had a much higher basketball IQ than Deuce and the boys. Ball and player movement is at the essence of fluidity, and it takes more than some nice raw skills.

They were, but I don’t believe experience alone will yield the kind of ball and player movement, special awareness, and anticipation that were what made them so special.

No Idea... He started following several UD players on IG post/during visit including Deuce, Mali, Kobe, etc, and they all followed back
I guess we just have to be patient

ESPN’s most recent list of top players in the portal doesn’t include any former Flyers. VCU, George Mason, and UMass have players in the top 100, but not UD. No mention of Amzil.

If he plays anywhere near as well as his dad did at Miami back in the day? Yes, please.

He had higher profile P5 offers. Guess he thinks New Mexico gives him the best shot at a starting/starring role.

Smart choice - gives him the chance to score 15 - 20 a game. That would not happen at UCLA.

Best Wishes to Amzil
He has a chance to be an offensive star.

He must have loved UD Arena and went with the closest option.

I clicked on the link in Furio’s post above and scrolled about 500-550 of the 1500+ players listed. And there was the UD logo and Baker listed as going to a JUCO. Possibly grades? Wants to be a big fish in a small pond? Who knows. But that’s my source.
