AG has made it clear or seemingly made it clear that they are trying to fill the 2 open scholarships. There was a rumor about a forward on campus last week, but nothing has come from that. I tend to think that AG would target front court players to close out the recruiting. Right? Does anyone know if there’s anyone even close to making a decision where UD is in the player’s final group of schools? Are there any available ‘23’s that could make an impact as a freshman? I’m not just looking to feed the rumor mill. We’ve had plenty of that. I’m truly just curious. I know that AG keeps a tight hold on information, which I actually enjoy. I like the surprises. I also like the on board sleuths who have nuggets of info occasionally. Gotta admit…I get a bit psyched when LHS posts something about a potential recruit. I believe he’s the one who first posted about a forward on campus last week. I suppose that could still come to fruition. Anyway, any rumblings?

I seem to recall that the Flyer Faithful gets antsy about this time of year in the recruiting cycle. Then about mid to late June the targets are solidified and announced.

I think AG's targets are still out there. Seems to me there was/is a chart showing by month the number of commitments going back a few years.

According to 247’s player rankings, Jazz Gardner is the only top 150 player available. I am shocked that’s the case. I figured there would be more late movement with recruits being over recruited by schools grabbing guys from the portal.

That can't be true - UNC just had a 5 star kid decommit.

I figure that it’s not updated. I wouldn’t be surprised to pick up a top 150 kid who was recruited over by a team grabbing a player from the portal. I assume that there will be late movement due to situations like this. It’s just tough to know who are the kids thinking of recommitting and who may have considered UD.

We are thinnest at SF and PF. A three-guard lineup helps with that, but I'd prefer to see those spots buttressed with these last two ships. Zimi and one freshman is not exactly comforting.

Usually we get names from the players themselves who tweet or show their visits on social media. (This player isn't doing that.) Other than that, it takes someone with an inside source to get names. Schools can not publicize visits. They aren't supposed to even talk about a player until they receive a committment.

I think he can be good... He's not Toumani level but maybe that changes.

Only thing I'll say is, I think he's more talented than Zimi so that's a plus for the Roster (if we were to land him)

I wonder if he goes the traditional high school recruit approach. It would be great to land another high ceiling but under the radar guy. That would be a great way to close out the ‘23-‘24 team.

I think they need to fill the last roster spot, and I think they should fill it with a player they believe can contribute/defend as a 3-4.

While the above and below are patently obvious, given the combination of an elite talent returning for one more season and all the uncertainty on this roster, they need to push all their chips in. If there's some extra NIL money sitting around, throw it at as proven of a player as they can find.

For a range of reasons (Holmes's last ride, Grant's status, the transient nature of CBB, last year's disappointment, injury issues, the winnability of the A10), the roster should be tweaked to maximize every possible advantage for the upcoming season. Deal with the 24-25 roster next March.

Just got off the phone with a longtime fan, and we ended up at the same place as flyer016. Get the best 3/4 out there. Go for a transfer. Unless a major ‘23 recruit backs out of a commitment, focus on the portal.

Since he’s Lithuanian, my guess is that he is not LDS. That actually can be a big help for UD. My guess is that he grew up in a Russian Orthodox Church.

Edit: Catholicism is the major religion in Lithuania. It is the overwhelming majority. That looks like some fun history research for later tonight. Btw, there is a very small LDS population. In 2013, it was around 900.

BYU is a tough school to out-recruit. Rabid fan base, good location, FBS footprint, and a league on par or better than the A10 right now.

That Atlantis debacle last year still stings too. Everything that could go wrong in a 2nd half and OT went wrong.

And there are almost zero Mormons in Lithuania. And over 98% of students at BYU are LDS. Provo is a world away from Lithuania, which is a predominantly Catholic country.

While it's true that Dayton and the surrounding area may not be picturesque, BYU puts a lot of strict rules on its students. Also coming from a majority Catholic country, he may feel much more at home here, spectacular scenery notwithstanding.

I’ve often wondered if there is a split in the locker room at BYU between the LDS players and the non LDS players. Both in basketball and football. For those who are devout in the Mormon faith, it is much more restrictive socially than what normal college kids are used to.

My sense is you don't know enough LDS people, no offense. I have several close friends who are LDS and they are the most welcoming, sweetest people you'll ever meet. It's actually disappointing to me that more religious people don't act like them.

I have a friend who is deeply involved in BYU sports. Indeed, he is an "insider." I asked him that same question about possible divisiveness between LDS and non-LDS players. Faith discussion do surface, largely as it relates to Sunday activities and missions, but he strongly indicated there is complete cohesiveness among the athletes. I agree with Gazoo. I have several LDS friends and both they and I would go to any length to go to bat for one another...and we have. I don't think the faith issue would be an impediment at BYU. That being said, I hope he finds UD the best fit.

I think my question was interpreted the wrong way. I wasn’t trying to intimate the LDS athletes would be exclusionary. I know several Mormon’s and agree 100% they are very welcoming and warm individuals. That said, few ever went “clubbing” with me in my earlier days. That is where I thought a gap may exist…social nightlife.

The faith element may play out in other ways. You’re not going to play poker and grab some beers with your LDS friends. For a college student, that may not be enticing. My experience with what was a close LDS friend was great. Lots of laughs. Good times. My wife worked with a guy who was LDS, but he was less likable for reasons unassociated with religion (cheating on his wife, addiction issues). I would think that team play would be unaffected. However, college life is different. Anyhoo, fun fact: my wife’s great great aunt was married to Bingham Young. It was Harriet Folsom. She is often noted as his favorite wife. My wife is not LDS.

I’m surprised it mentions coffee and tea but not Coke. My LDS friend said that his family viewed drinking Coke as the same as snorting Coke. He ate chocolate, which also has caffeine. He said that the church reasoned that chocolate only has a de minimus amount of caffeine. Folks may forgot that there was a BYU football player kicked out of school for having pre-marital sex.

Petras is coming to the US with the goal of playing in the NBA. UD will have 3 forwards drafted or in the NBA since BYU had a forward play a single game in the NBA. Petras is regarded as an athletic forward. AG knows how to develop and use athletic forwards. That is in AG’s wheelhouse. That’s what AG does best. If he commits to UD, that’s why!

Thanks, Marysville. I didn’t realize he used it after BYU. I’m not sure what happened with UCF. I guess it’s possible that someone over promised or perhaps misled him a bit. I suppose it’s also possible that UD is working on NIL money. I read that WVU snagged the Syracuse transfer because they have figured out how to get money for foreign players. Hope we hear something soon.

Likely the hashtag doesn't mean much. Purely speculation but when I saw it, my thought was he was trying to garner attention from more schools. Not necessarily an indication that he was leaning toward or against BYU or us... more an invitation to see if there are any other potential suitors.

Of course... I think everyone is working an angle.

We waited a week or so for a Santos commitment after his visit, so I don’t think a few days delay means much. I’m sure AG made an effective sales pitch but also told him to take enough time to feel comfortable with his decision. I’d like to land this kid, but we’ll know soon enough one way or the other.

Regarding the hastag "not committed", I remember a few years back when players first started using graphics to publicize their visits, many viewers thought it was a committment announcement. Shortly after that, most players started using that hashtag on their recruiting visit posts.

Actually, there are some non-P5+ schools listed at the bottom, but the only one they show for the A10 is VCU. Don’t know if that’s because they’re the reigning Conference champions or they lost so much talent when Rhodes left. Regardless, we’re not mentioned.

I’ve noticed in other basketball related articles discussing conference strength that VCU only gets mentioned. I tend to think it’s lazy research and writing. It’s interesting that the writer includes 7 schools from the Mountain West. Did you happen to check out the numbers for other schools? There are schools with 10 players returning and newcomers. There are a lot of holes. I suppose it should be considered that there are so many more players with an extra year of eligibility due to Covid that players outside the top 150 may normally be in the top 150. Just a thought but seems to make sense. The bottom line remains the same that UD has a lot of company. There are a lot of schools with unfilled scholarships.

all things considered, there is a lot to like about UD..

I suppose he’s looking at playing for a team in the bottom third of the Big 12 or ACC. Does that improve his NBA chances? For a talented front court player, I would think that UD might do more for his chances. It’s been 29 years since BC had a front court player drafted. It’s been 19 years since BYU had a front court player drafted. There have been 3 UD front court players drafted in the last 5 years. Next year, it will be 4 in 6 years. I hope recruits see that math when they visit!

Our biggest selling point has to be playing time. His position is the biggest question mark on the roster by far.

Missed that. It’s been 16 years. The point still stands. If it’s about getting to the league, is it better to be in the bottom third of a great conference or to play for a coach who is putting guys in the league?

but, I assure everyone he is most definitely aware of the
last 4 or so years and how many we have gotten to the

I was simply asking a question of Hyde Park Flyer because he stated BC hadn't had a front court player drafted in 29 years, which I thought was not correct. I intended no commentary on whether a recruit knows these statistics or if they use them in their decision-making process.

I assume the pitch is "You are the kid that moves us up" which could be enticing. Some kids would eat up that type of pitch. Hopefully not one with a hashtag that seems like a solicitation.

Hey, there was no problem with pointing out my miss. Back to the point, I really do think that it has to matter how your position group is being developed. I get that not every recruit will see it. Deuce and Camara are 2 guys that came to UD because of Obi. It has worked for both of them. I’m sure it’s a point that’s emphasized during recruitment. If I were an athletic front court player buried on a P5 roster, I would hope to get a chance at a school like UD. I do think that it might be tougher to sell on traditional high school recruits. Add in the NIL realities, and it could be tough. I really hope that UD is able to make progress on figuring out the passive income approach to getting foreign players NIL money. That could put UD in a better position.

Recruiting is so different when you’re at the top. An old boss was recruited by Bear Bryant. He could skip some of the pandering. His message was simple. He said, “Eric, it’s been a long time since someone from your parts has come to Alabama. You need to come to Alabama.” It was powerful and persuasive. Ultimately, Bobby Bowden used his charm to get Eric’s commitment. He made efforts and used charm that wasn’t necessary for Bear Bryant. He didn’t need it to fill his roster with top talent. Flash forward a few years after that, and Eric led FSU to a win against Miami at Miami when they had Bernie and Vinny. It was his career highlight! The point of this is that we all know that lower schools have to outwork the bigger, better schools. That hasn’t changed. It gets tougher now with unregulated NIL money. The big payoff of course is an NBA contract. That’s what AG has to be selling. Figure out how to get foreign players paid, and that’s another big arrow!
