Take Crean

Take Crean--if we can! Love Grant and would welcome him as my neighbor but Crean is a more proven coach by far. He cleaned up the mess he came into at IU and has national recruiting experience.
Based on what we seemed to have offered Archie to stay, the money should be there.
Makes sense to me!

I tend to agree. I look at Crean like I look at Ben Howland--did a good job at Jockocracy U., but fan's expectations & timeline wildly out of whack with reality. I'd have taken Howland in a nanosecond. Think doing the same with Crean has merit.

Does he want us, though?

Agreed. He would take the Georgetown job (if offered) and go back to the Big East before us, IMHO.

Howland has performed much, much better than Crean. BH has 3 Final 4's, 2 Sweet 16's, and 5 other NCAAT appearances on his resume.

I would take Crean over AG though.

'Take Crean' is a little presumptuous. Is he knocking on our door and we're not letting him in? My guess is if he's going after a job it's Georgetown.

It's not in a vacuum. A job in the Big East, where he had success in a tougher Big East, in one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in America. UD is a great job but it is not better than Georgetown. If we got into the BE maybe, but that's been discussed at length.

Where's the barf bag. When are we going to start acting like who we are (okay fine) who we want to be? Doesn't hurt Wichita Gonzaga etc.. Law school or MBA fine, basketball program no UD wins.

For some reason, I can't picture Crean at Georgetown. Just does not seem like a good fit, although I could be wrong of course. It's like trying to picture Thad Matta at Villanova or something. Crean seems more like a Midwest guy. He went to Central Michigan and then coached at Michigan State, Western Kentucky, Pitt, Marquette, and Indiana. The culture in Washington D.C. is vastly different than all of those places.

It doesn't mean much, but just for fun, this site ranked the top remaining open head coaching jobs. Dayton # 1, Georgetown # 2, although they did get a few of their facts wrong ha:

That's pretty much his only other choice if he wants to coach right away, correct? So you might be right. There are not a lot of top openings right now.

I see all the Tom Crean stuff, and I get that is an acceptable choice, I wont hate it, but I think UD should hire Anthony Grant.

All the direct comparisons between Grant and Crean are rough and crude to a large extent. Much of the knock on Grant is from Alabama time only; and realistically, there is only so much so fast a coach can do in the football wonderland. I just feel that Grant's time at Stetson, Marshall, and Florida, are all significant.

Outside of the one Final Four run, Crean's Marquette teams didn't really advance that much in either the NCAA's or NIT. And, five of his nine IU years, were either no post season, or first round NIT loss.

Clearly Grant is comparable to Crean. It seems to me that UD would really create a special emotion and situation if they brought Anthony Grant home to be the Flyers Head Coach. Furthermore, I highly suspect that Grant would want to stay for a decade, assuming things worked out for all parties. Crean on the other hand, I think will bail first opportunity he gets from whatever he thinks is so called big time job. Grant, I believe will feel like this is a dream come true. And, there is no way to replace that kind of emotion, and personalized commitment.

HIRE ANTHONY GRANT! And, try to keep one or more of the assistants if possible.

Ummm....

Grant has 3 NCAA appearances, never getting past the 2nd round.

Crean has 9 NCAA appearances, 1 final four, and 3 sweet 16 appearances.

They're not comparable at all, really.

And I like Grant. I'm okay with that choice. But you absolutely "Take Crean" if you can. Problem is there isn't been any indication he's actually interested or being courted by UD.

With all respect to Grant, UD can make a better statement with whom they hire. In Crean's case it would more clearly state that UD wants to increase the status of the program and are showing that commitment by hiring a more proven coach.
One, IMO, would more likely hold our present recruits, and, over time, increase our chances with future prospects.
Crean came into IU with less than an empty cupboard and, at least for that challenge, he was excellent. He was strong at 'Quette, and, while he eventually lost favor at IU, showed good skills during his tenure there.
I personally do not care if he comes and stays 4 or 5 years, so long as he improves our program.
Frankly, while I do like Grant, I fail to see him being able to do the same for us.

I hope the make-up artists at ESPN can convince Crean that parting his hair down the middle hasn't been fashionable since 1994.
