We will be down on Saturday to take in a practice. My son, a incoming freshman, was invited to take in as many spring practices as possible. With high school track practice, the weekend practice will be the only ones he will be able to attend. After practice me and the wife are going to stick around and take in some st. patricks day festivities

Any idea what their practice schedule is Friday and Sunday next week (22nd and 24th)? I am thinking about trying to catch 2nd and 3rd round games at UD arena and it would be nice to see a practice as well.

The 22nd, there is practice from 4:45pm-6:45pm. There is no practice on the 24th. There are no Sunday practices at all. Just the Spring Game which is Sunday April 14th, at 1pm.

My son and I attended our first practice yesterday. It went very well. The guys were working hard and really having a good time. Even though they were just in shorts and pads there were some big hits when the offense and defense were lined up against each other. My son was on the field during the practice and so many players came up to him and shook his hand. It says a lot about the character of the kids. I told my wife you would not see that at big schools, the kids are more about themselves. My son was really excited afterwards and told me the guys are just like him and that he is going to fit in very well. We are looking forward to heading back down next weekend!

Thanks for the heads up. We were planning on heading down Saturday thinking practice was later. We have family pictures early Saturday so that will not work We just confirmed a visit to practice tomorrow night. I am sure it will be a cold one.

Spring Ball

Scout86- I went yesterday and today. There were a few other parents, and handful of what i'm guessing were high school coaches and recruits. The weather and wind were better today than Friday. I guess those were practices # 6 and #7. The kids and coach's were spirited. Although i think today was better even though it was their third in three days. Defense was pretty solid in the team scrimmages. Running backs looked good and as you might expect the QB's and receivers are still finding their timing but not bad for March. The O-line has some BIGS this season. With all of BB activity surrounding the field and campus i thought the boys were pretty focused. Glad I went.

Thanks Michigan Flyer. It's funny because when we attended practice Thursday night the offense was really clicking in the scrimmages. They were moving the ball at will on the defense. The d-coaches were not to happy. I saw very few dropped passes. I guess the defense got the message. I also agree the line looks really big! I also felt the practice Thursday night was very spirited despite the very cold temps.

Lost a QB

Heard QB Jake Voigt decided to quit the team this past week. Leaves our QBs to three (currently) with three freshman coming in next year.

I know that I have seen a few new wrinkles in the tapes. Crossing routes or drags from the wideouts seems new. I haven't seen that in three years. I have been told that some of the players have switched positions. It's a safe bet that my son will never have a career as an analyst, because it's like pulling teeth to get any information out of him.

I didn't watch the entire practice but what I did see I would say the players are more focused, kickers were practicing punting out of bounds within the 5 yard line and I would say they were doing it 80% of the time.....saw a couple of Long snaps that scared me....offense looked good on the short passes, defensive line was getting to the QB a lot ....from my few years of being around I'd say it looked like the QB was more careful at picking his targets this year....but it's only practice....we'll see come August.

Interesting that the Coach at least implies that there is a competition for the starting QB spot. I think a little fair competition is always a good thing.

We cannot win the PFL with average or below average QB play like we have had the past two seasons. I have to believe that Will is on a very short leash. If things do not go well early, I look to see Luke getting a shot. We need PFL player of the week performances to win the league this year.

Looks like Sunday should be just about an ideal day for the spring game. For once the weather god's may be shining upon us. Let's hope that is an omen of good things to come. As many have expressed, getting any info out of my player is somewhat difficult, depending upon his mood. Many times I get the Iverson reaction of "It's just practice, nothing happens, you've seen them before". He did mention a while back that around five maybe up to ten kids decided to hang it up from EOY to spring practice. Many are usually upper class kids who've been injured or just feel they aren't going to see much action. Hate to see any experienced QB give up though. Per the article, sure hope the o-line is gelling. That is the critical key IMO.

Hello all,

New to actually posting here - but I have been paying attention since the fall. Does anyone know when the clinic starts on Sunday? We are excited for the Spring Game itself - but it is always great to watch the young men work with the little ones.

Go flyers!

FBUD, We will be there Sunday. I don't know how much tailgating will be going on but my youngest son will be participating in the football clinic before the spring game and we will have a whole host of family attending as my oldest son will become a member of the team this fall. It sounds like fantastic weather and we are looking forward to meeting some other football parents and watching some Flyer football! After the game we will be going to my daughters house in the ghetto to probably have a post game celebration Can't wait for Sunday!!

FYI - Winter Guard Color Guard is in town this weekend - in and around the arena. However, it looks like they finish up Saturday night. Traffic in and around campus was heavy tonight. Eating spots were busy. Same thing next weekend with Winter Guard Percussion.

http://www.wgi.org/contents/World-Ch...Schedules.html

Believe it or not, they bring more folks into town than just about any event - including the NCAA.

Spring Game

Well matched good spring game!

Luke Johnson played really well at QB. Not much of a running game today but that is to be expected when dividing up the O-line. Pailin had a long TD run from the TE spot.

Defense looked solid. Long TD play seemed like a blown play from a young LB. Really think Cam Stubbs could be a difference maker on special teams in the return game with Gary Hunter.

Here is some info from the UD write up.

Johnson was 15 of 17 passing for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Colin McManamon led with six catches, gaining 41 yards. Michael Massaad had four for 26 yards, Nye had three for 70 and Branden Johnson added three for 35.

For the Red team, Will Bardo completed eight of 15 passes for 124 yards, with a TD. Pailin was Red’s top receiver with three catches, and the game’s top gainer with 102 yards.

QB play

While I agree that one set of stats does look amazing....I caution you to not get too carried away with it. The identity of our offense has been a running game mixed in with a big passing play here and there. That being said, one qb has a huge advantage in the running category. The coaches have a huge decision to make and it may come down to a philosophy change. One qb is a dual threat that has accuracy issues in throwing and the other is a gunslinger but not a threat really to run the ball.

It was a spring game in which the teams were divided up pretty evenly. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the fall. I saw a lot of promising players and play.

I think the new uniforms looked pretty good. I can't wait to see them on Thursday night this fall.

So.... Here is the question in my mind. Is it easier to teach passing accurracy or to teach how to run? If we are going to win the league in my humble opinion, we need to be able to pass and pass well. Our running game via the RB's has been solid for two years and we have not been winning.... It seems to me that Luke could be taught to be a decent runner, at least enough to keep defenses honest while expecting Will to become a better passer seems to be a lost cause after two years.... Maybe the "passer" can start and the "runner" can be a wildcat option. It does not seem as though we have a Kevin Hoyng or Steve Valentino on the roster, but maybe if we can figure out a way to use both of these guys we can obtain similar results. The reason that Kevin and Steve were so good is that they both could run AND pass. It drove defenses crazy. Almost impossible to defend. If I were designing a defense for Will, I would stop him from running and dare him to beat me with the passing game. Based on a couple of years of experience, that is what opposing teams seem to do and we do not win like we used to.... JU and Drake have both had good success in the PFL with "gunslingers" who were not much for running.... Bottom line is that it is time for a change or we are going to sruggle to hit .500 again.

Spring Game has other happenings...

I listened to the 2nd half of the Spring Game & it seemed like a spirited game, even with crowd noise.

Coaches did a good job of mixing up the players again. Had to look back at notes from a year or two ago to re-learn where some guys matriculated from & their high school exploits. In these types of games against each other, only an exceptional play stands out & there were a few! With the “touch rule” for the QB, a lot of the offense is “sequestered”. Not many linemen were mentioned so my question is: Are some of the “Big Men” class going to see the field yet? So they actually kicked off this year - sounded like Hunter took a hit & maybe that was supposed to be a “touch”?

Good to hear Branden Johnson catching passes after his bad shoulder injury at Davidson. Of course Brannon Dunn is recovered from his appendectomy at Duquesne.

Offensively our QB has improved. Bardo was 8 of 15 for 124 yds which is better than his 2 seasons at less than 50%. Maybe this is a sign of improvement in accuracy. His yardage was about the same and needs improvement drastically – the last 2 seasons our passing yardage totaled 2900 yds versus 4600 the previous two years. We seriously need passing yardage to beat more than one team with a winning record in 2013.

Young QB Luke Johnson showed better with 15 of 17 for 171 yds. (In the 2012 Spring Game, Luke was 15/26 and Jake Voigt, who is no longer with the team, was 6/9. Both had TD tosses) Nice to have a backup ready because Luke’s performance is for naught. Will gets the ball the next practice – always has. He is a good practice player & a better runner. Regardless of praise & encouragement, Luke or anyone else will have to wait for injury or graduation or drastic coaching decision for his start.

The team has four Captains this year & all are very deserving regardless of our familiarity with their names. Bet you never would have come up with several names. Only one is on offense – Ben Estey, OT; Brannon Dunn, DT, Kyle Sebetic, CB and Colin Monnier, LB. Surprising that only four times before has there been a 2-year Captain as with Monnier. From what I hear, all are honored & take the title/responsibility seriously.

Finally, after the game the recruits met the team & their Big-Brothers. For you who never played or went onto the field to listen, this is an exciting time for all involved. Just imagine, meeting your whole team (up until now it was a couple players but mostly your recruiting coach). In front of all, the Head Coach asks you a couple of questions & introduces the player assigned to help you through your summer questions & August Camp experience. The day probably involved a stop at the bookstore or the shop on the main street with family for UD wearable’s! Great day for these senior high-schoolers & their family at Welcome Stadium – their home field for the next four years! Sorry, I’m all fired up! I remember 2006!

And in 2013 all WERE involved. It was the first time that all recruits attended the Spring Game. It is exciting now for their families because no doubt within the next 60 days, the 28-player class will be made known publicly by the UD football program.

Flyer Gramps makes a very good point. The coaches must see something in practice (or not see something in practice) that makes them keep the rotation as is. I think next year is a big year for the Flyers. I think they have some very strong 5th years coming back and we will have a few Seniors that will use up their eligibility and not have the opportunity to come back. With a potentila playoff birth on the line, the players and the coaches need to step up and try to win this season. I think it would be big for this season and future recruiting classes if the Flyers get back to the top of the league and are the PL's first automatic qualifier.

Believe making the playoffs may be a stretch, If QB play is similar to last year, a mid pack finish may be in order. Just don't believe we are what we once were. Hope the lads and coaches prove me wrong. RC needs this year to be an improvement and that could be a struggle. Have no idea how our competition stacks up this year and dispite DF's positive outlook, out first game will be really tough.

Thanx for the video link:

My, my, a TE free behind the defense and rambling for a TD; that was 6'4' Ian Pailin, #89 in red.

It looked like a highlight film for #10 in white, Dan Ney. He can catch! He's from Lake Orion, MI. The lake there, also named Lake Orion, is not very big, but neither is Danny topping out at 5'8" (call me maybe).

Was #83 in red Cory Stuart? (what color & number was he?)
