Miami Match
They beat X this past weekend. They have not been a strong blocking team. Our fast offense should cause them problems. I listened to the ISU coach's press conference before they played us. She was worried about our fast offense and if they could get their block set. ISU is a good Top 35 blocking team. Miami is not. They are averaging only 1.63 blocks per set, which is not good. That ranks about 230 out of 330 D1 teams.
If we can get a good pass and set, our hitters should be able to score. I haven't seen any of Miami's matches this year, so I don't know if they serve tough or how their offense runs.

With no official communication from UD on injuries, speculation is all we have. Laura has seen limited action in two matches. Jess in one set. Any playing time tonight should indicate their injuries responded well or at least ok to the activity.
I expect us to beat Miami without any if the players who have been out. If they get no playing time, I wouldn't read too much into it. If we don't need them, TH might continue to rest their injuries so they are available when we do.
Go Flyers.

The game is on ESPN3 tonight at 7pm. Wasn't listed on our website (that I saw), but found it on the upcoming schedule on ESPN Watch.

UD takes set 1 25-24. I haven't been able to get my ESPN link to work????
Sloan started. It appears, based on subs, Lauren playing 3 rotations in front and Jordan coming in for her for the back 3. Maybe someone with video can comfirm that. Thx

UD up 2-0 after winning 25-20 in the 2nd. Sloan scores our last 3 points on kills. Hubacek subbed in for Lauren's backrow rotations at the end f this set.

We were rolling in set 3 and then Miami started blocking - especially our middles. Took us another set to adjust. In set 5 Bruns was a killing machine, got us a big lead, and we rode it home from there.
Solid win as Miami is picked to win the MAC.

Impressive match, just what the team needs to keep them on thier toes. First match with most starters back, little rusty at times but stepped it up big time in set 5. Bruns as you said was a beast.
If anyone wants to see the match ESPN3 has it archived and can be replayed at ESPN3 or ESPN watch.

This is a perfect example of what Udvbfan posted under another thread. Teams can decide to shut down a player(s). In this case they decided they were going to shut down our middles in the third set. So the blockers "cheated over" to the middle and/or took that first step or two to set the block against the MB before Jane touched the ball. In our offense we set a lot of low quick sets to the MBs so the block has to go early or our MBs will beat it.
Adjustments were made once they started doing this and the ball was sent to the OH in the 5th set, because that was the open hitter, and Lauren was the beneficiary of that adjustment. The vast majority of the time when a hitter gets a single blocker, the hitter is going to win that point. It's why there are so few solo blocks. Most solo blocks are the blocker guesses exactly where the ball is coming over the net or the hitter makes a mistake. So you do get some blocks. But, good hitters love one-on-one blocks because it's easy to score.
Teams game plan to shut down certain hitters or positions on the court. Usually that's the OH1 and OH2 because they take the most swings and the pass has to be very good to set the MBs. So playing the odds you would initially try to stop the OHs and make a team work to beat you with their MBs. That wasn't working for Miami, so they made a defensive adjustment in the third and forth sets to get it to a 5th. It was good coaching, but in the end we made the adjustment to send it outside because their block was cheating to the middles.
