Getting to Buffalo
Read today that 350 miles is the threshold for whether or not you have to take a bus, or get to fly to your tourney site. UD is 396 miles from the First Niagara Center, whereas, tOSU is 324 miles away. They may be closer, but we'll get there faster

Per NCAA rules, #Vols have to bus to Dayton. Knoxville to Dayton is about 305 miles. Anything less than 350 means automatic bus trip.

Seems sort of dumb to me, but I would think that it works out more in our favor, other than about an hour longer car ride for fans, which I feel like wont really make a difference if your traveling 6 hours vs 5.

The final score will either shorten or lengthen the drive. Flyers win, and six hours will feel like three, lose, feel like ten.

Take a bus
Here is the scoop on Ideal Travel's bus/hotel package:
+Roundtrip motorcoach transportation, departing Dayton (Carmel's Restaurant on Shroyer) Wednesday, late morning, returning Saturday*
+Shuttling to game(s) and any events sponsored by the University of Dayton Alumni department
+Moderate accommodations in the Buffalo area (Holiday Inn or the like--you know the type of packages we put together. It won't be the Marriott, but it won't be Motel 6, either)
Price per person: $450 + tax, based on two to a room.
Triple occupancy rate: $375+ tax per person
Quad occupancy rate: $350 + tax per person
Solo travelers: $650 + tax
*This package is designed around UD Basketball. If the Flyers win, we will stay until after the game on Saturday, then return back at that time. If the Flyers do not win Thursday, We will return to Dayton on Friday (and you will likely see a reduction in your overall cost, based on the policy of our hotel for checking out a day early).
Remember: You are responsible for obtaining your own game ticket. This package is transportation/lodging only!
To make this package a go, I will need 20 people confirmed (that's names and payment info provided) by 1pm on Tuesday, and can continue taking reservations throughout the day, once we meet that minimum threshold. Please call 937-223-7447 with your credit card ready. If you go to voicemail, please leave your name and phone number, and I will return your call in the order in which it was received.
In the event that we do not have 20 people registered by 1pm, I will do my best to help you connect with other fans who might wish to ride share/car pool for the roadtrip.
March Madness is here--I hope you're along for the ride!
Go Flyers!
Sincerely,
Leslie Gonya

Why does the NCAA care how a team travels?

Unless there is an idiotic NCAA rule that dictates how teams have to travel to Tournament sites based on arbitrary geographic locations, I doubt OSU will opt to take the bus to Buffalo and put their kids through a five-six hour ride when they can easily afford a charter plane up and back. Smaller, less affluent programs may be tethered to the NCAA's travel budget, but programs like OSU surely aren't.

The NCAA has some really crazy rules. I wonder if there is a rule where you can't even pay for your own charter plane.

Maybe you can, but all logos for any company that doesn't pay the NCAA a fee must be removed and the plane must be painted some combination of blue, black, and white.

I wouldn't be surprised if OSU had its own plane (or should I say "planes".) Meanwhile, if OSU, or any other team for that matter, decided to charter a commercial jet, how would the NCAA know who the he11 was landing at the Buffalo municipal airport and why would they have any say at all as to who can fly in there. It's not like the aircraft itself is going to have any commercial exposure that would infringe on the NCAA's commercial rights. If MrFlyerFanatic is right, it just goes to prove once again that the NCAA is nothing more than a bunch of over reaching, petty dweebs.

The 350 mile rule is for the NCAA paying for the travel. Any team can decline and pay for their own travel. Most do choose to accept the free trip.

FYI. I saw pictures on a friends Facebook. The Buckeyes did fly to Buffalo. And for those wondering, it was a Sun Country Charter, not painted NCAA (or Buckeye) colors.
