The Times They Are a Changin'

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Back on July 18, 2010 “FTS” produced a column entitled “What a Bunch of Tweets” on the emerging use of Twitter in college basketball, more specifically by your Dayton Flyers:

As you can see for yourself, the article listed the Twitter accounts of Flyer players, as well UD coaches, former players and a few prominent hoops columnists and recruiting experts.

And I kinda got drilled for it.

Ignoring the fact that Twitter accounts are totally public (unless the user has the good sense to make their Tweets private) the reaction was less than favorable, to put it kindly.

Then in September, there was a follow up piece entitled “Coincidence? I Don’t Think so” which chronicled the sudden radio silence on Twitter by UD players after that first column appeared:

The feedback was a little better this time, except for one dissenter.

One other by-product of all of this was that “Swampy Meadows” eventually ended up with his own Twitter account. I didn’t create it; those were not my tweets contained on it, but there it was for all to see on the intrawebs, complete with a number of followers, many of whom no doubt thought that it was mine. Fortunately Twitter frowns on such shenanigans and much to the chagrin of the dishrag hipster frat boy who opened it, the bogus account went bye-bye.

I bring all of this ancient history up now, because Doug Harris over at The Dayton Daily News published a column the other day which deals with this very subject. The bottom line is that unlike BG, Archie pretty much lets his guys tweet to their hearts content. And, like me, Doug lists the Twitter accounts of all of the current UD players:

The reaction to Doug’s article?

Crickets

Which is as it should be.

Elsewhere in the world of college hoops:

-- My friend Conrad Klank from StadiumJourney.com sent me the link to this article that ranks UD Arena the #1 college hoops experience in Ohio:

-- Dayshon “Scoochie” Smith can really scooch, if by ‘scooch’ you mean elevate:

-- Great article from The Toledo Blade on our guy in the NBA, Brian Roberts:

-- RushtheCourt.com checks in on the A-16:

-- Obviously the big news surrounding the A-16 this week was the exodus of the “Catholic Seven” from the Big East. Chris did a great column on this recently. Here are a couple of the better opinion pieces on the subject:

The Hartford Courant has no pity for UConn in this whole mess:

CBS Sports says that all of this should put the A-10 on alert for poachers:

-- Dunbar grad Geron Johnson is putting up some decent numbers at Memphis:

-- In case you missed it, this is the absolute worst FT attempt in the history of FT attempts:

-- Bill Simmons of Grantland spent some time with NBA HOFer Bill Russell recently and the product was this excellent piece:

-- Sad to hear that drummer Ed Cassidy of the ‘60s progressive rock group Spirit passed away recently. Their hit “I Got a Line on You” was played every 5 minutes on WING during my freshman year at University Hall:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
