Xavier's AD sounds a bit ticked off:
http://www.cincinnati.com/story/spor...ames/83013494/:
"We are disappointed not to be a part of the Gavitt Games this season. We expected to host a Big Ten team and alerted the Big East office more than a year ago to our limited date availability because of the Puerto Rico exempt tournament," Xavier athletic director Greg Christopher said.
"The narrow date window wasn't an issue until the last few weeks. Through the numerous calls and exchanges, we moved other games and ultimately offered four possible dates where we could host a Big Ten opponent.
"Four potential dates and 14 potential Big Ten opponents - yet no game in the Cintas Center.
"We are actively working to fill the Big Ten scheduling void."
So anyway, Xavier is looking for a presumably non-buy game opponent to play at the Cintas Center. Hmmm, I bet a certain school about 50 miles to the north would be willing to start a home and home series with them. Lol.
|
I hope they don't schedule a buy game. If they're genuinely upset about not getting a quality Big Ten opponent, then it makes no sense to schedule a crap opponent. Rumor has it that Utah is looking to start a home and home series ON THE ROAD against a top 25 team. So, there's that option. It's not like a buy game is their only option.

If he wanted to play us so bad, he should get us a home and home with Michigan.

I wouldn't be shocked if a home and home does happen as Michigan would look at it as a way to get back to recruiting the Southwest Ohio area hard like they used to back in the day. To have them come down and play is a double edge sword, but UD is well placed to hold it's own on and off the court with Michigan.

The way things are going, I'm really glad we're not playing Wright State on MLK Day 2018...
Piqua66...what do you think?

It would probably be a close game this year. Kenpom #140 vs. Kenpom #180.

But
Check out the Net ranking discrepancy. Any Horizon League opponent should be a buy game
for an A-10 opponent.

If WSU can convince Ohio St to host us, then we can host them. Otherwise, no deal.
What we need is something similar to what Indiana does (or used to do) where they have a tourney with Purdue, IU, Notre Dame, and Butler.
We need the same only with XU, Ohio State, UC, and us. Would be a nice tourney with A10, BE, Big Ten, and AAC conferences.
Could be at a rotating venue or neutral venue. Here is an idea: To make Wright State feel better, we could play it at the Nutter Center.

I’d love to see the GCJ. I’d like to see it during the holidays.
Be cool if it was a double header with the Lady Flyers playing before

Dayton - 58. Wright State - 191. Horizon regular season champs - 182.
A-10 - 10. Horizon - 27. Enough said.

Charity? Yea good idea. The 1st Four just dropped about 5 mil into the Dayton area and that's not quite enough.
Would the 5 mil been there if WSU hadn't played in the 1st Four .... yep. Thought so!
UD has invested in the Downtown area in the Arcade to promote business start ups in last 3 years. Was WSU involved? Nope .... thought so!
UD launched a center for minority-owned and diversity business center resources including money located on West 3rd Street. Where was WSU? Not there? You guessed it!
Yea We need to play them so WE can provide funds to charity.
What the hell does he think UD has been doing?
Some newsman he is.

Can we make that into a 3-game exempt tournament? XU, UC, UD, OSU, and then an invitation to 4 other Ohio teams. Presumably the top 4 NET teams from the previous season.
Any of these teams should jump at the chance to be in a tournament like this:
Akron
Bowling Green
Cleveland State
Kent State
Miami (OH)
Ohio U
Toledo
Wright State
Youngstown State
That seems like a worthwhile tournament to run every 4 years.

depending on NCAA rules,
a game for charity would actually of been
a good idea the year we had the
tornado outbreak, was it 2019....
think the public would of responded
positively to that...

I know some XU and Miami grads that would love to see this tournament.
I think the Indiana schools do this. I think the interest would be through the roof

The problem with doing an exempt tournament is that you can only play in one per year, and we get WAAAAYYYYYY more of a boost doing any of the ESPN tourneys than we would an all-Ohio tourney.
Obviously, the ideal thing would be a one-day rotating opponent even in Columbus with OSU, Eggs, and UC (another poster mentioned how IU used to do this in Indy), but no way that gets done.
I'd love to get the other Ohio D-I schools involved somehow, but they're split between the MAC and Horizon, and just don't fit the "one day mega event" billing. Maybe you somehow work out that half of the 8 MAC/HORZ team agrees to get bought by the 4 Ohio "Staple Schools," and the other 4 play each other, and those 6 games are the "undercard" to the mega event. Start on a Saturday, and play those games through Wednesday as little more than a gimmick to create some buzz for the following Saturday's 4-team Clash in Columbus.
Dayton, Eggs, UC, and OSU get a TV-ready event, probably close to a Quad 1 guarantee, along with a slightly more appealing than average buy game against an in-state foe. The other 8 teams are, admittedly, battling for table scraps, but it's gotta be better (and easier for their fans) than going halfway across the country to be bought.
Or, you know?, WSU could just agree to be bought by Dayton every year, if they want that game to happen. Nothing's stopping them, other than hubris in thinking they deserve a home and home.

When he got the Ohio State job Holtmann talked about the possibility of a tournament with Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati and Dayton. He had been a part of the Crossroads Classic in Indiana (which is now dead) with Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Butler and liked the idea. It never got off the ground, which didn't surprise anybody on this board.

Although I wish it would happen an Ohio version of the Crossroads Classic is never happening
Ohio State plays 20 Big 10 games, ACC/Big 10 challenge, CBS Champions Classic and sometimes in the Gavitt Games against the Big East
Holtman is playing exempt tourneys like Maui again after Matta just had OSU host an exempt tourney against buy game opponents
So that's 25 or 26 of the 31 games in the regular season accounted for right off of the bat
