How 2014 is different from 2009, 1990, 1984, 1974, 1967
Each of these years we won at least one game in the NCAA tournament.
What's different is that each year except this one we had a program defining player on the roster:
- 1967: Don May
- 1974: Donald Smith
- 1984: Roosevelt Chapman
- 1990: Negele Knight
- 2009: Chris Wright
Not to impugn anyone on this year's roster, but I think we'd all agree that no one on this year's team rises to the level of anyone mentioned above.
What it does say is that this team truly is better than the sum of its parts. Kudos to them and the coaches for reaching this point with solid teamwork and unselfish play.

When will you all realize Chris Wright isnt as great as you think?
Great kid? yes
Bust ass in class? yes
Help us out when he easily couldve gone to MSU or Texas? yes
Dude has made the NBA and i hope he sticks, he deserves it, but he had no outside jumper, wasnt a good defender, not a good free throw shooter and committed WAY WAY to many offensive fouls. Spent too much time worrying about who he did his pregame jump celebration with. CW was a solid player but he was held back by a poor coach. Its offensive to name him with Velvet,Negele,Don May and Donald Smith.
Just my IMO

Valid points, but CW did score 1600+ points to rank #15 all time. Had he not busted his ankle in 2008, we would have been a scary good tournament team that year with he and B-Rob leading the charge.
Regardless, CW was an uber talented local kid who chose to stay home and play at Dayton; the program won 97 games while he was in school; and we won an NCAA tournament game for the first time in nearly two decades thanks to his performance. I consider that a program defining player.

Worded that way i agree. I guess i just expected more from him. Program defining? yes. Maybe could be listed with Negele, actually yes, he should be. But doesnt belong with May.Smith and Velvet.
Man, he couldve been so much more, and im still really sour about his Junior year, they were an unmitigated disaster/disappointment that year.
His Senior year wasnt his fault, Staten and Spearman torpedoed that season.

No one "go to guy," just a bunch of guys who are playing incredibly well together & have bought into the program.
Fun to watch.

Agree on all and I'll also argue that CW was not a "go to" player. A lot of his points came on simply working his arse off, which he did exceptionally well. But he was not the type of guy you draw up a play for when you need a big bucket (unless it was an ally oop slam).

The fact that Chris Wright chose Dayton when he could have gone anywhere in the country is the important thing here - a good program keeps the hometown talent.
And he is on a short list of the Flyers who made the NBA.

Maybe 2009 should be credited to Charles Little. He was the only graduating senior. We win a NCAA game with him. Next year, don't make the NCAA.

Oliver and Sibert are pretty close to Wright or Knight. And do not forget Sibert is a junior.
Having coached, I will tell you flat out having a star is not as important as having eight good players, who play as a team. Many teams have struggled because they have a star, who screws up the team cohesion.
