Building the Bracket

I think I've shared some of this site over here before, but here they are again building a bracket. It's kind of long if you watch the whole thing, but it's interesting to see the process....albeit a very abbreviated version of the process. The start talking about UD around the #9 line. There are two videos, but the one where they build the bracket is the first one.

This isn't a highly trafficked site or a site that's all that well known to that many people. But, as the saying goes, if you work in athletics (in media or in athletic departments), sometimes you have to do things that remind you why it's fun. That's kind of what these guys are doing. They're really not even going for a big audience. Even though it's on the lighter side, it's still a lot of good information. No one on the site is on this year's selection committee, but they know A LOT about how this all works.

I just wanted to share it.

Was that David Griggs or Seth Rogan driving the Dayton agenda?

The guy out in Hawaii said he had UD in his last 2, the frog dude, whomever that was, had UD around a 9 seed. Kyle Lamb was moderating it, but didn't provide much analysis, other than getting the 2 to work together. Is that the Kyle Lamb who writes for an OSU site?

anyhoo, thanks for the link Brew, interesting listen. I would have liked to hear more about why the greenwood guy didn't like UD at the 9 (or 10) seed line. He didn't really give any specifics (which is probably why he was railroaded over by the frog who had a lot of good things to say about UD and wasn't as worried about the "bad losses" I thought the comment about UD lossing at Illinois St note being that bad since it was on the road, and the Greenwood guy saying nobody should lose at Illinois St was a weak argument, but whatever, I'm sure the NCAA panel is a lot more specific and in depth.)

I also found the Xavier discussion interesting, specifically how a couple of them said how they liked Xavier until they started breaking things down more the night before and realized their profile doesn't stake up, kind of interesting there. Finally, I also liked the Belmont/ UWGB discussion. Jerry Palm has pointed this out, and they did as well, but for the last 3 seasons, the committe has given one of the "first four" bids to a team like a Belmont or UWGB, not a great profile, won their conference regular season, but not the tournament, a couple of good wins, but not a ton of quality wins due to the conference they are in. Jerry Palm proceeded in his analysis to point out that those 3 teams are a combined 0-3 the last 3 years, so will the committee give up on that since they haven't been rewarded, or will they continue that trend.

The committee says it's not who you lose to but who you play, beat and where you play them yet 2 of these guys use the our bad losses against us and the committee also says how you finish plays no part whatsoever into seeding yet they use that metric in seeding here as well. So I guess things aren't used until they are and things are used until they aren't. Much more art than science in a lot of this.

there was an interesting article with Mike Bobinski, former X AD, current GTech AD in the AJC this morning, sorry I don't have a link. Mike used to head the NCAA selection committee for a few seasons, served on it for 5 IIRC. He said he used to be blown away how many times he would hear a talking head mention how a win over Team Y would lock team X into place, says they put way too much emphasis on the "what have you done lately" while the committee strives hard to consider a team's entire resume, not just the last few weeks (or conference tournament) unless something is done to significantly alter a team's profile late in the season.

When seeding Creighton they picked the Indianapolis, but wouldn't Memphis be closer to Omaha?

Here is an explanation on what goes on during the first day and night of the selection process, and about 17 mins in you can see a replica of what the board looks like.....and that is what the actual board looks like...

Interesting in the video that, while talking about the 31 teams under consideration for the remaining at-large picks, they single out four or five as in "pretty good shape" to be assured a spot. One of them they mention is Dayton.

Of course.

These guys are very entertaining. Around the 37 minute mark they talk specifically about the a10. In a nutshell they say that SJ's must win today to make the field while if Dayton loses the a10 is most likely a 6 bid league. They say that while Dayton doesn't have a lot of great wins they have a lot of good wins and could very well already be on the "at large" list today and not even waiting on current "at large" teams to win their conf tourney to free up other spots. The sock puppet guy (David Griggs) says that Dayton could miss the bus to the game today and still make the tourney. And if you haven't listened or watched any of these video's these guys really do know what they are talking about regardless of the fact that one of them is saying it via a cookie monster sock puppet. Let's hope they are spot on. Better yet let's just lay it to SJ and not have to sweat it out Sunday.

thanks brew, that was a great podcast. Enjoyed the parts about how the selection process started over the first 30 min or so.
