Very tough news... Jhery Matos out for the year

per AG on his show tonight

Torn Ligaments in his foot/toe

That is a huge loss. His court sense as well as his shooting skills made our bench light years better than last year. I believe someone just posted this week something about our bad luck over the years with injuries. Crap.

AG was dealt a bad hand with graduation, defections/attitudes. Realize he's got all but one scholly committed, but we better be dressing at least 11 starting next season. I'm sure the Frankie RS made sense at the time, but we're not Duke where we have 6/7 players giving us 99% of the minutes.

I think the rule is still as long as he has not played in 20% of the games he can get a medical redshirt. Not counting our A-10 tourney or post season games, 6 out of 31 games in the regular season is still below the 20% threshold, so pretty sure the answer is yes he will get a medical Red shirt

EDIT- When I posted the above I assumed he did not use a redshirt or have any delays between years or anything in JUCO.

A real punch in the gut. Still looking forward to next year, but wow, this is a bummer for this year.

Tough to start a season with only 9 guys. One of which was not ready and was to be red shirted. No doubt the next few years look great but a bit of a miss to start with a Short roster. Feel bad for Josh and us older fans.

Rule is no more than 30% of regularly scheduled games (conference tourney counts as 1 game even if team does not qualify for it) in first half of season. Any fractional result when computing 30% is rounded up to the next whole number. Matos should easily qualify.

Wow! I feel bad for Jhery and the rest of the team. This means Frankie sat-out the first 6 games for nothing, and roles will need to be adjusted for everyone but Josh and Obi, since Jhery was a true G-F but Frankie is more of a pure F. True, we should be even better next year, but this hurts the chances of sending Josh out on a high note this year.

Oh, well, soldier-on men.

Wish he wasn't hurt, but it's a little overdone to say this is a huge loss. Every team deals with injuries. Liked his defense, but putting the ball in the bucket is the problem with this team and he scored a total of 8 points in three games in the Bahamas.

Cohill and Frankie get more minutes. I'm betting we get more than 3 extra points a game out of those two going forward.

Next man up.

When I heard Turf Toe I cringed, it sounds like it’s no big thing. But it is big time as I remember Kieth Byers had it and it almost ended his NFL career. Google it and look at the pictures.

Tough luck but he has a good shoulder to lean on in Mikesell.

The defense and unbelievable passing will be missed. But they can be replaced to an extent. It won't be easy. Not comparing him to Josh or saying Matos would/should come back this year but the comeback Cunningham made two seasons ago to finish the season with those seniors was one of the most impressive rehabs I've seen. He wasn't close to 100% but he was bound and determined to play with those guys. Here's hoping Jhery comes back strong next year!

Big picture if he redshirts it places a real premium on the open scholarship. 6 juniors next year so we really need to maximize for a 2020 PG and another spot to cover the whole when the 6 juniors leave

Well this is tremendously bad news for Jerry and the team but he’ll come back and he has Josh and Ryan to lean on. We’re definitely going to miss his presence on the court as he appears to have 6 eyes and Magic Johnson type passing - not to mention his stellar defense and his shooting. Kudos also to Frankie as he could have declined to come back in. Never know how these things can turn out but everyone please keep in mind- these are students first and athletes second. Got faith in AG. Go Flyers!

You're right, huge is an understatement. Catastrophic might be a better word. We now have only 8 eligible scholarship players. That's 62% of the allotted 13.

How many more players would need to go down before you consider it "huge?"

No I think Frankie was sitting because AG realized every time he looked down the bench and saw Frankie and Matos, he was going to call for Matos. So Frankie would have burned a year for mop up duty since AG wasn't going to call his number anyway.

Now he looks down the bench and doesn't see Matos. Frankie will go from ~1-2 minutes per game (had he not redshirted) to presumably 8-10 minutes per game. The latter is worth a year, the former is not.

Matos is a huge loss for this year. Our best on ball defender, good rebounder and gave solid depth. With Him very confident we could win A TEN. Now is a chance for Cohill to emerge and play more effective minutes and give us some scoring. Frankie has to deliver 10 to 12 a game and be able to guard. If so back in business!!!

Sure he's a loss but he's had a total of 8 baskets-8! 1 for 8 or a horrible 12.5% from 3 and a woeful 31% overall. He's looked good on defense but displayed nothing on offense yet.

Losing Jhery hurts. Losing Trey or Josh would be a huge loss. Losing Crutcher would be a catastrophic loss.

I agree with the entirety of your post...with that said...

I don't think you have to worry about AG's guys doing the right thing. It appears, at least from the outside looking in, that the guys that AG has, to include Frankie, are willing to do what is right for the team and program first versus individual interests.

A competitor returns no questions asked. A team player also understood the need for the original redshirt. Either way, they were/are both opportunities. One to get better with a year out, and the other to help make an immediate impact. It appears he was willing to do either one for the betterment of the team.

I agree but Jhery did bring a certain level of defensive grit and athletic playmaking. His scoring ability would have come with more games under his belt. I was expecting him to average 8-10+ pts in A-10 play and provide splash 3pt shooting with solid defense.

The guy was a 36% 3pt shooter last year @ Monroe and shot 5.6 3pt attempts/game. He will be missed. Hope the staff takes their time and slowly nurse him back to health. Next year, our wings will be unbelievable.

Let's face it, losing Jack Westerfield would hurt at this point. I wonder if AG can pull a rabbit out of the hat at this point. Is there player out there with a year of eligibility who is sitting home just finishing up rehab of some sort. Or maybe a player who opted for the draft and did not make it with a year left? It seems like there could be a dozen weird scenarios where a player might be available for a partial season.

You do realize that before Matos was injured we had only 8 scholarship players as Frankie was a redshirt at that time. Same # now - just swapping out Frankie for Matos. I agree that 8 is not optimal, but it was the same before the injury. So was this season going to be a catastrophe before we lost Matos?

You actually think Frankie is as good as Matos? We lost a lot when we lost Matos. Our current 8 is not the same as our previous 8. And before the injury we actually had 9 scholarship players as Frankie could have played at any time.

Yep.Way too early to tell if the swap will be even as we knew what we were getting with Matos but if I had to pick one to get 15-20 mpg it's definitely Matos....Kid can defend multiple positions, great on the press, great passer, better with the ball and facing the hoop, perimeter, etc.

At this point they really need both to be optimal but what happened happened..Frankie already has a collegiate body for a young guy and hopefully the additional mpg increases his production.....

Thought Frankie had a nice game with all the circumstances. He didn't try to over play his role. 4 assists, a bucket, one TO, and a steal. Something to build on. Won't make us forget Jhery, but ok.

Agree! I give FP full respect. Imagine being told you are being redshirted to mature as a player, to very shortly after getting the tap on the shoulder to hit the floor in game time. He didn't light the world on fire, but he was hustling and looked like he fit in with the flow of the game and team movement.

He also showed great awareness with those 4 assists. A couple of those were nice, and one turnover was a very nice attempt to hit Obi right under the hoop, but he through a rocket from 5 feet away. If Obi snatched that, it would have been yet another slam.

Matos is/will be a great player. His defensive ability and length was some of the best on the team.

I know it is way early to call it, but he presented big problems for offenses due to his length and defensive positioning within a lineup. Right now, the Matos loss is greater than the Frankie eligibility...but we also didn't see much of Frankie and he could easily slide into that role.

The 4 assists are the head-turning stat. 2nd collegiate game, one of the youngest guys on the team, still adjusting to the college game, and he gets more assists than many point guards. That unselfishness bodes well for his future as a Flyer. Nice game, Frankie!

Not saying that I think Frankie will be all league this year, but I saw a lot of potential in his limited time. He seems to have good sense of offense, ie spacing, timing, etc. But also seems to be getting used to the speed and athletes in college ball. No way to understand his physical limitations yet. But I think he will be a quick learner and maximize a role as a serviceable contributor. The upside is if he gets comfortable physically, I see another level possible if he can get the point of being aggressive looking for his shot and dictating offense.

One area where it might be that Policelli replacing Matos could be a positive is in games against the High major teams.

Policelli is not a guard or a guard-forward like Matos, he will probably be used exclusively at the forward position. The team will have a lack of depth at guard which could be filled by Trey shifting to the two guard spot at times. This would give the Flyers a better match up against talented teams in the high majors (given Policelli develops as we hope).

However the Flyers have very few games against such opponents. Against the A-10 teams and the other schools on the schedule excluding Auburn the shift of Trey to the 2 guard spot would be at best irrelevant. But it might make a big difference when the Flyers are playing as one of the elite eight of the NCAA tournament.

Not too long ago, redshirting a player with Frankie's abilities would have been crazy. His talent looks like he could have started on some past teams. Shows how far the Flyers have come.

Six juniors really loads up that class. Puts the pressure on AG to nail Landers and open scholarship right now or it's a rebuild after that class graduates

I think he means nail the recruiting on the replacement for Landers with a big recruit for after Landers graduates.

Here’s an update on Matos. Surgery went well. Four months process to get back on the court.
