Wes Coffee?
I was talking to friends last night about the game when he got hit in the face several times by Evansville players and how much of class act he was about the whole incident. Tried to research his career after UD and couldn’t find much. Anyone know what he’s up to these days. He was always a hustle guy. One of my favorite flyers ever along with Ray Springer, Anthony Grant and Troy McCraken. Loved when Mike Hartsok would say “ the Coffee is brewing “ when Wes would make a good play

Wes went to Europe and played there for a while. He bulked up there too.
At one time, he was working part time at Katz as a bouncer. He was built, so no one should ever have messed with him. That was years ago. Not sure what his full time job was.
I played with him in open gyms a bit in the late 1990s.
Super nice guy, but he did make me pay dearly for blocking a shot on him once. We got along a lot better after that incident.

I think the key to this post is that you loved something Art Sock said.

Urban Suburban, Katz, Kettering BBQ, and a rare store that sold the Daily Racing Form. All within staggering distance of one another. I seem to recall seeing Wes there before. Maybe out of one eye..

My 6'4 cousin manhandled McCracken both times they played during his senior season when they were both in High school, and I kicked my cousins butt routinely. Its a shame I did not have 6 more inches on me, better control of my flying elbows, and one less beer can in my hand. I could have been a star for Don Donoher and the Flyers. Oh what could have been........

McCracken's claim to fame: he hit the free throw that beat Ohio State 81-80 in Columbus in '87-'88.

Coffee was inducted into the Dixie High School (New Lebanon) athletic hall of fame a few years back. Here's a blurb from the DDN which suggests he is a teacher in Helena, Alabama, which is a suburb of Birmingham.

Which store was that? The old convenience store that was located behind the current Speedway? I can't remember what that place was called, it is a pet store now.

UD2, I don't remember the name. It is in the complex where Urban Suburban was. I'll look next time I drive by. It was a convenience store if I recall correctly. Not like a grocery, as Russ's Market is, near the old White-Allen dealership on N Main. I think you can still buy them there.

Thanks guys. Yeah, he seemed like a good dude. Surprised I never saw him as a bouncer. Used to go there. Before I left Dayton

I was thinking of the Stop-N-Go convenience store, I could not remember what that store was called. It is a pet store now.
SNG is no longer in this area IINM, I think their business model ran into trouble after a while, since they did not sell fuel initially, and then all the gas stations started building attached convenience stores, which hurt SNG.
And I imagine that the Dayton racino on Wagner Ford Road has to sell the Daily Racing Form.

Wasn't the "much not beloved" Chris Mack who delivered the basketball facials to Wes?

Yes it was, I think twice. For those who may not have seen it, Mack was trying to throw the ball inbounds and Coffee was guarding him. Mack bounced the ball off Coffee's head to avoid the 5-second count.

I am not much of a gambler, but I know that the old River Downs, which has been renamed Belterra Park, sells the Daily Racing Form, both in person and from a machine.
The Dayton racino most likely does the same thing.
I had never seen a machine like the one at Belterra Park, so I thought that I would post a picture of it:

Use to be aggravating trying to find a form when you were going to the track or even for online betting. I don't know how many times I went into Russ' Market and they were sold out or had a version that contained tracks I wasn't interested in. Now all you need is a printer and to go to drf.com and get your form. Personally I use the Brisnet form that's free as long as I bet the track I download on Twinspires. But if you want all the stories that DRF contains, download it from drf.com(they never run out).
