Nine Weeks

WEST BLOOMFIELD (MI) -- The kickoff of the NFL season last night means that NCAA basketball cannot be far behind—there will be hoops exactly nine weeks from today, according to the daily countdown by Jon Rothstein at CBS Sports.

Let’s open up the old “FTS” favorites file and see what falls out, shall we?

-- As I write this, primo PG Dwayne Cohill of Cleveland Holy Name HS is on an official visit to the UD campus. Zagsblog breaks down the seven schools that are working the hardest to secure his services:

-- The last edition of “FTS” was entitled “Five Names You Need to Know” and it listed Cohill and the other four prime 2018 UD men’s basketball recruits. Well, now there are six, as you can add Omar Silverio, a 6-foot-3 guard from St. Raymond High School for Boys to the mix. David Jablonski of The DDN with the details:

Omar Silverio Highlight tape:

-- Get out your calendars, kids, be they electronic or old school! Here is a PDF of the entire Atlantic 10 schedule with notations as to which tilts are televised and on which networks:

-- Lotsa chatter recently about the NCAA possibly changing the transfer rules and perhaps eliminating the requirement that players sit out a year. Here are a few opposing viewpoints:

Rob Dauster from NBC Sports:

TSN Mike from TSN:

-- Isaiah Thomas says so long Boston, hello Cleveland in a piece from The Player’s Tribune:

-- Here comes the science! Ken Pomeroy explains how to measure site-specific home-court advantage, in two easy parts:

Part two: https://kenpom.com/blog/how-to-measu...tage-part-two/

-- How Doris Burke became the best **** basketball broadcaster there is:

-- Sad to learn that former WKU great Jim McDaniels had died:

My freshman year was the last season that the Flyers played in the Fieldhouse. I lived way out on West Campus, so I had to pick and choose which games I wanted to attend because it normally entailed staying up overnight outside the ticket office. I went for star quality: Louisville, Niagara (with Calvin Murphy) and WKU with Big Mac, who won 70-65.

-- Really and truly bummed to hear of the passing of Walter Becker, one half of the musical genius that is Steely Dan. Got to see them perform live and they did not disappoint. Rolling Stone memorialized Becker by producing this list of the "Top Ten Steely Dan Songs":

Really cool video series on YouTube of the making of Aja, my all-time favorite Dan disc. To say these two guys were meticulously OCD in the studio is an understatement:

For his part, Donald Fagen intends “to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band.” Good on you, Donald.

-- For those of you who have not been here recently, Detroit is really undergoing a major revival and JP Morgan has provided a lot of the muscle behind it:

-- Stop me if you’ve heard this one, okay? So, a bat flies into an Irishman’s house…
