season just got under way but Obi Toppin

is averaging a double/double... not only that....

he is tied for 14th in the nation in scoring
he is tied for 24th in the nation in rebounding

and his combination of 25ppg/11.5 rebounds per game

is number 1 in the nation, in terms of combined points/rebounds per game....

I've looked, and I can't find anyone better, on any team in Div 1...

not sure how to do a link, but I copied the address to it:

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketbal...individual/137

Jalen Crutcher assist/turnover ratio of 4.33 has him tied for 35th in the nation

Obi is also 22nd in the nation in FG% at 69%

go Flyers!

I don't know if the NCAA keeps track of dunks per game but he's got to be among the leaders in that. What does he have right now, 12 so far?

Obi is the uber Flyer !! And he has put up some awesome stats. But let's be honest, we haven't played anyone yet. If those numbers are sustained aft Maui, Obi will have passed the litmus test IMO.

Go Obi ! Go Flyers!

Concur. We really really really need to beat Georgia and get into the winners bracket at Maui.

He's certainly putting on clinics thus far, but yeah, against some very weak talent.

One thing I don't like to see if that it seems abundantly obvious other players are more determined to feeding him the ball than doing their part of make the play unfold the most efficient way possible. I get it - his dunks are awesome and all, but if you have a clear look at the rim on a break, just get the points instead of going out of your way to try to get him the ball.

We've already missed out on a few points because of that very scenario - and those are points we have to get against real competition.

Obi will have a couple “Toppin-Triple Doubles” before the year is over...

10+ points
10+ rebounds
10+ dunks

In a game. It’s going to happen.

They do keep track. It may be too early. Last year he finished second to the big kid from TX, who went to Moeller.

one thing I noticed, is that some coaches apparently give
players the green light on 3 pointers after they cross
half court....

coach Donoher always said Smitty had the green light,
but he had a deadly outside shot.... but this blows my mind:

tied for 1st in nation if 3 pointer ATTEMPTS, is
Andrew Robinson of Coppin St...

for the year, he has made 14 3 pointers.... wait for it...
in 51 attempts... so he has made 14, and missed 37...

in 5 games.... how is this possible? what is this, 28%
or something like that....

just noticed this, thought it was a strange stat...
I'll keep updating our Flyers national stats
through the season...)

No doubt Smitty would be our all-time scoring leader if he’d had the three-point shot back then.

I already know that.....)

there was a quote by Coach Donoher when asked what his range was,
and he said "after he crosses half court"...

I think it was at a Baldwin Wallace game perhaps,
Smitty shot the ball, and sank it,
I recall between 5 - 10 feet after crossing the half court
line... that's why I wrote that...)

the Baldwin Wallace coach walked around the outside of the floor,
up to Coach Donoher, shook his head and said something that made
Donoher laugh....

the next day, when asked what the other coach said he replied:

he shook my hand and asked me if I taught Smitty that shot...
I said I wish I did!...)

Well yeah, but if you did that, you'd have to give Don May and Henry Finkel a 4th year also, then it might be close.

Right. The three point line alone wouldn't have given him the 579 points he would have needed to be ahead of Chapman. Velvet had 2233 points in four years while Smith had 1655 in three years. The most amazing totals go to May and Finkel, with 1980 and 1968 points in three years. Finkel has the highest per game career average at 23.7 while May is second at 22.0. Smith is third at 20.4 Chapman's is 18.9, behind Monk Meineke (19.4) and Johnny Davis (19.3). Obviously, if May and Finkel had played four years, they both would be well ahead of Chapman, as would Meineke.

I would prefer Obi stick to "quiet" dunks early in the game because he is going to clank a few of those windmill types. I hope to see the look on AG's face if that happens in the first half of a close game.

I'll just use this thread I think,
and update Obi and any other
Flyers who have national ranked statistics...

it will be easier for me just to use this one...)

Xeyrius never really shot an inordinate number of threes until that URI game when he was the hero for hitting two huge last-minute triples...

Obi is off to a great start. He has some key matchups in the future - Bey of Colorado, the St Mary's big Aussies, etc. I expect him to eat the A10 alive.

I will restate what I have previously posted on Pride. Obi has a very good shot at being UD's first All-American since Jim Paxson. I mentioned to a friend of mine who is an MSU graduate that if they meet, it is possible that Obi will be the most talented player they face all year.

Let’s hope they meet in the semifinals in Maui. But I think you would have a hard time convincing MSU that Obi is better than the performance they saw from Powell (Seton Hall). He put up 37 against Spartans while playing through a high ankle sprain. Izzo said something to the effect that God couldn’t have stopped him on a couple of his buckets.

there was initial concern it was a high ankle sprain, which would of kept him out for a prolonged time... turned out it wasn't a high ankle sprain, it was a turned ankle, still painful, but he was able to shoot Tues and Wed in practice before their game... he looked good in practice, good but not 100% by any means..

https://nypost.com/2019/11/13/seton-...-state-battle/

not demeaning his performance, still on a tender ankle, he was clearly the best player on the court... but let's see how Obi does against them, hope they play each other....
you take 27 shots, you should hit for 30+.... still a very good player, will make it in the NBA, good quickness....

Last 2 games
Myles Powel vs Mich State 37 points...12 for 27 - 6 for 14 3 pointers, 6 for 13 2 pointer, 7 for 9 FT
2 assist 2 turnover....

last game vs St Louis
26 points 6 for 18 FG% 4 for 11 3 pointer, 2 for 6 2 pointer... 3 assist 2 turnover.. he excelled on FT - 10 for 12....
he made 6 shots, he missed 12....

they play different positions of course, but by gum with a cayenne twist, I'll do it... if they play Mich St,
I'll come back here and post Obi's stats...

Thanks for additional info. Spartans and Billikens are traditionally pretty tough defensive teams as well, no?

Anyway, Obi is a stud no doubt. Nice to have a player from UD in the conversation for top players.
