Rush Limbaugh announces he has advanced lung cancer

He just went public on the radio. I'm not a huge Rush fan but have listened to him a lot the past couple of months. Sad news.

I've been listening to him off and on since I lived in LA back in the mid 1980's. WHIO is the only one I can get at work or I would have on Bill Cunningham at least half of the time. Anyway, good luck with your treatment Rush.

Very sad for anyone. I too rarely listen to him, as I do not care for his style, but I am saddened by his situation.

I've always enjoyed Rush. His time slot is during working hours, so I rarely hear him much. He goes a bit extreme with his theories from time to time, but I have to credit him with being a free-thinking pioneer in the media.

Before Rush, there was nearly no answer to the growing leftist leanings of the media in the early 90's. He was calling out the MSM decades before it became so extreme that we all could clearly see it. There are many things that he saw early on in the strategic movement of the Democratic platform that have been proven true, IMO. "Climate Change" and the lunacy around it is one of those good calls on his part.

Never been a Rush fan. He drinks too much GOP bath water. When the Libs spend like drunken sailors he does ape. When the GOP goes it, nothing to see here move along. A GOP candidate could be down 269 electoral votes to 1 and he'd still be talking about how the race isnt over. He's apparently deaf, but his blindness too often got in the way of his objectivity. If the person was a conservative (in name or in actuality), they crapped thunder in his world. He could also excuse just about anything a GOP'r did.

I looked at Rush like I did Alan Colmes or any progressive talking head. Their job is mostly propaganda. You have to accept that going in. They are so entrenched in their own team their head is little more than an echo chamber. I remember turning on Rush quite a bit while in the car driving from UD to work every day. It just always sounded like a Goebbels-style filibuster.

That said I would never wish ill health on anybody. Whether its Rush or Ginsburg or...

He also denied the links between smoking and cancer as recently as 2015. Hopefully he will change that thought and become a champion for smoking/cancer education going forward.

I have listened to more than my share of Rush. I like him fine however at this point I tend to enjoy his guest hosts more. Itís not really anything against him itís mostly that you canít listen to anyone for that many hours without it becoming a little repetitive. The guy virtually invented conservative talk radio and almost singlehandedly saved AM radio. The man is the Babe Ruth of talk radio. It was very cool seeing him at the SOTU speech getting the medal of freedom.

I value the Presidential Medal of Freedom a lot more than the Time Person of the Year. I'm hoping the President it not trying to sell magazines.

Also, if I was going to give a Metal of Freedom it would go to Iron Maiden.

Rush is one of the few people that has had an effect on the entire country and possible the world. Like him or not he has been one of the most influential people on the face of the earth for the past 30+ years. Chris R mentioned he drinks too much GOP bath water. I disagree. Rush creates the bath water and the conservatives follow his lead.

May God be with Rush and anyone else suffering from a terrible disease.

I just checked the list of recipients. I am now more than fine with Rush receiving it. It really isn't as prestigious as I thought it was.

As I stated before, I do not listen to his show, but based on what he has accomplished over 30 years for millions of people, the accolades are well deserved.

Glad Trump was smart enough and kind enough to do it while he is still alive.

The stuff said about Rush after receiving the Medal of Freedom is beyond the pale. The ones making the ignorant comments have obviously never listened to him. Rush is a positive, America first, let each and every citizen regardless of race religion.... thrive and succeed on their own. This means get the government out of the way!!

I remember when Rush had a 30 minute tv show for a short while on network tv, it was entertaining and informative and different, sort of a precursor to some of the FNC shows.

Produced by Roger Ailes...ran from 1992 to 1996...seems like a direct precursor to FNC.

I didn't think that show was very good, As awesome as Rush is on Radio he wasn't nearly as good on TV. While we are reminiscing do you remember his short stint as a NFL analyst?

I do not have the patience to listen to talk radio, so I have never listened much. That is why I like FNC, they get right to the point, talk radio is much more long-winded and meandering. I liked Rush's tv show, the tv format forces you to get right to the point, especially when you only have 30 minutes, really more like around 20 minutes due to commercials, to work with.

I do not really remember Rush as a nfl tv commentator/analyst.

He was fired from ESPN pretty quickly (~4 weeks) for saying the media gave Donovan McNabb credit he didn't deserve because he was black.

I dunno. Many said that Rush was right, McNabb was not good enough according to many. Is that racism?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_Limbaugh#2000s:

In 2003, Limbaugh had a brief stint as a professional football commentator with ESPN. He resigned a few weeks into the 2003 NFL season after making comments about the press coverage for quarterback Donovan McNabb that caused controversy and accusations of racism on the part of Limbaugh. His comment about McNabb was:

I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve. The defense carried this team.[34]

The sportwriter Peter King construed the comment as "boneheaded".[35] The sports analyst Allen Barra wrote Limbaugh's viewpoint was shared by "many football fans and analysts" and "it is ... absurd to say that the sports media haven't overrated Donovan McNabb because he's black".[36]

I am not condoning how Limbaugh said it, but keep in mind we are talking about the #26 rated quarterback in the NFL for the 2002 season.

For non NFL fans, only 32 teams in the league.

Except he had been to three straight Pro Bowls and two consecutive NFC championship games, and was runner-up for NFL MVP in his first full season as a starter at that point and itís not like things have changed because you hear the same things about Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott and a number of other black QBs today.

He said “from the get go”. McNabb’s first 4 full seasons (2000-2003) he had a combined 41-17 record, 2 NFC Championship games and an MVP runner up.

Not sure about that. All I've heard is how good Mahomes is and how bad Garroppolo is. Jackson is still young, but has been impressive. Prescott, thus far, hasn't been good enough.

I think that QB's in the NFL, regardless of race, are judged pretty quickly and harshly. Doesn't mean it is racism just because some of them happen to be African American.

What was his qb rating all those years and where did it rank compared to the rest of the league?

Tim Tebow got 3+ chances to play QB in the NFL and he sucked (4 different teams), Lamar Jackson, this year's MVP, was asked if he would switch to WR in the NFL. I follow the NFL closely, white QBs get WAY more chances than black QBs. Of course you will be able to find individual cases that go against the trend, that doesn't mean that the trend doesn't exist.

Not a great comparison, it was a different league then. Bottom line is he QB'd a team to 2 straight conference title games and was the MVP runner up at the time of the comment and he ultimately ended up the 4th QB in history to throw for 30,000 yards, 200 TDs while running for 3000 yards and another 20 TDs along with Fran Tarkenton, John Elway and Steve Young. He was also the Eagles' all time leader in pass attempts, completions, yards and passing TDs. The dude was good.

Heck, the fact that it's 17 years later and we are rehashing this after the career he had should give you your answer.

You have to admire Trump. He just made the Democrats attend Rush's award ceremony. LOL.

He had a good career, I knew he had a good career, but I guess he had a down year when the comment was made.

The part of Rush's comment concerning NcNabb's ability was wrong, I suppose that the part of the comment about social concern in the NFL could have been true, I am not sure.

If Iím reading the Pro Football Reference website correctly, hereís where McNabbís QB ratings ranked in the years he made the Pro Bowl:
2000 - 18th
2001 - 7th
2002 - 8th
2003 - 16th
2004 - 4th
2009 - 12th

Again, if Iím reading the stats correctly, in 3 of the 6 years he was a mid-tier QB, who probably was selected on the basis of his teamís performance and his name recognition. But in 2001, 2002, & 2004, he was a top-tier QB.
