Chase Johnson on the way back?

First him and Elijah Weaver followed each other on Instagram yesterday during the day.

Then Coach Farrell followed him last night as well (Chase followed him back)

If he is healthy and right frame of mind, yes please... That my friends is the athletic 4-man we need... Hopefully it's true.

In a lot of Jablonski's recent stories he includes the number of open scholarships; once with Chase's counted and one without. He started doing it after the season ended. Assuming Jablonski has legit sources, that seems to be a kind of hint; likely that the door wasn't completely closed.

I wish someone would nail this down already. I know it's likely touch-n-go, and there hasn't been a concrete decision yet, but it seems there's been enough chatter to send someone out to track it down. I'm also really bored and overly invested in Flyers roster intrigue.

There would likely be hurdles to cross first before it can be official. Since he missed out last semester, he may need to complete summer class work before he can officially be allowed to re-join the team. Just spit balling, not sure how that officially works.

First and foremost, I hope he's medically/psychologically doing well. If he's good there you could really see his basketball game blossom under CAG who's had a ton of success developing PF type players.

The door was never closed. He took a medical withdrawal from school. He is still enrolled as a student. He is probably a semester behind where he would have been, but is still in good standing. Chase was never removed from the roster.

I would love to have Chase join the team again. I watched him at the Arena in every game he played there and you could see him blossoming. The last game he played, he scored 18 points and was a real force in the paint.

Even the possibility that Chase might return excites me. Loved what I saw from him last year and he would complete the roster for next year in the best way possible in my opinion.

Please. Please. Please. Please.

Having him with Jordy and Sissoko would make me feel way better about the athlete we lost in Obi, and the "man among boys" in Trey.

Wasn’t he a red shirt somewhere between FL and UD? That would have put him ahead academically. Based on the FL bio and his withdrawal after one semester this year, he’s been in school 2.5 years. He might come in as a RS Soph the first semester this year and in January flip forward to a RS Jr??? I’ve never seen that before, but maybe? Also, I think it’s possible he took a couple online classes in the spring. That’s a guess. And most of the athletes are encouraged to take a couple summer classes to stay ahead and not have to overload during the season.

He was a red shirt the second semester 18-19 at UD then received a waiver to start first semester 19-20 at UD. However his medical withdrawal began before exams in the first semester last year. He probably took incompletes and may or may not have completed those courses by now. So he has likely completed at least 4 semesters, maybe 5.

Seems like there's something going on with Chase. Several pieces of activity all at once. I'd absolutely welcome him back. A healthy Chase is the missing piece of the roster right now. He's not Obi, no one is, but he is talented, has size, is athletic and knows and fits the system without structural changes. Chase and Zimi should be a nice tandem at the 4.

Obviously the staff and Chase know best. Still can't forget about his injury history. If I'm AG I'm still looking for someone with some size that can at least play D and rebound as an insurance policy with that last scholarship.

We absolutely need a 4 next year. Chase would be perfect for that role, since all he is missing is the ability to be big and physical, and that is all we can be sure that Jordy and Sissoko can do at this point.

Are you sure he is still in good standing, academically?

My daughter, and her friends at UD said he was struggling in class.

All things considered, we should be so lucky as to find a player who, if healthy, would check all the blocks more than any other recruit we are chasing at this point in time. Hope you are well Chase.

If Chase comes back maybe they will turn down the music a little! I'm half deaf and it's too loud.

To the best of my knowledge.
I would imagine he was having trouble concentrating, studying, perhaps even going to class becuase of post concussion issues. If he had been able to continue in the classroom, he could have continued in school and stepped aside from basketball. I don't think that was the case which is why the university allowed a medical withdrawal.

I've been sitting on this for awhile since my source is a high school sophomore that I can't even trust to take out the garbage... About a month ago, I was telling my son that we need another big that can play immediately and my son replied, "Why? Chase Johnson is probably coming back." I asked him what he meant. He is friends with one of the coach's sons on Snapchat and was part of a group snap (my snapchat terminology is not up to speed, so I might have that part wrong) where somebody asked the coach's son if Chase Johnson was coming back. The reply was "probably". I blew it off at the time and just said, "You can't believe everything you read on Snapchat." But maybe there is some merit to it based on recent rumblings on here.

Your story is identical to what I heard from my high school sophomore son. Like yourself, I have been sitting on this one for quite awhile. The last time that I shared information from the same source, I was proven wrong when Posh Alexander signed with St. John’s instead of Dayton. However, I’m starting to think Chase coming back is a real possibility. If healthy, his return would be a huge boost for the team.

Good morning, Devil's Advocate here - I'm not sure that CJ coming back is the best move for UD or Chase. I only have what I have read here and some minor insights off this board to work with. First, I don't think there was ever 100% verification as to the reason Chase withdrew in the first place. It could have been physical, due to concussion, mental, due to concussion, or academic, due to whatever, or a combination of things -or- something completely different. What has happened to put him in a position to return? All of the things I listed above IMHO don't just cure themselves with a year off. So, now Chase is another year removed from bball and possibly farther behind academically. I'm suggesting that he will not automatically be the chase we want him to be. He'd have to ramp back up physically, and adapt to another combination of teammates, etc. and be in a position to mentally devote 100% to basketball with out any other distractions to hold him back. So, is an 80% - 90% - whatever% Chase better than other options? That said, I 100% believe that AG will put Chase's long term well being first. I'd love to see Chase play for the Flyers and give this team 100%, but I also want Chase to live a long, healthy, happy life.

double Devil's Advocate: only Chase can know what is best for
Chase.. and he has a very fine medical staff here to monitor
him..

The reason he withdrew could be physical, mental or academic.. all of which could be related to the concussion. Depending on the severity, time off can absolutely be beneficial. It all depends on the person and the situation...

we all want wants best for Chase, and if he feels ready to to
and is cleared that would be fantastic. but I am absolutely
100% sure everyone here wants the same thing for Chase..

does that include coming back?
I hope so, and believe it is a real possibility

Go Flyers!

For about 11 months, from Chase enrolling second semester (Jan 2019) and participating everyday as far as we know in practice from Jan- Mar 2019, and in workouts that summer, thru November games, Chase appeared to be ok playing basketball. The DDN did reported he got mono in August 2019, which probably limited him at least for awhile.

He averaged 12 minutes in the first 7 games. But sometime shortly after the Dec 3rd game, his health changed or his recovery from the mono wasn’t progressing, resulted in a medical withdrawal later that month.

The positive here is it appears he can go 100% all in at the D1 level for an extended period of time if healthy. Unfortunately we don’t really know what caused the setback and as much as we’d like to have that info, we aren’t entitled to it.

We also don’t know what he was like before the mono...he may have been a starter before that. We just don’t know if those first 7 games were him trying to get healthy after the mono and back to a high level of play or if he was struggling to recover???

The second positive is he remained on the roster. That tells me the coaching staff believed in his talent and all parties hoped he could return to the team at a healthy level to play.

However this plays out, I too am confident Chase’s current and long term health will be the most important factor in any decision.

I certainly agree with the consensus here that the health of Chase Johnson will be the paramount concern as it should be. That being said, I cannot think of much that would come as better news in this off season than the return of Chase to the Flyer lineup.

I was present in Chicago for our heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Colorado last December, and left the arena that night believing that with a healthy Chase Johnson available off the bench, we would have been more competitive on the boards, and likely would have left town with a W.

No decision needs to be made as long as scholarships available...keep door open which is what I expect of UD. If he has recruitable brothers why damage a relationship before all the facts are known. We will know soon enough...

Youngest brother Luke is a 6'9" high school freshman. Who knows what the future holds for Chase or Luke, but you are correct do not damage a relationship.

I honestly think Chase can be a consistent 12pt.+ ppg, 7 rpg. player if healthy, and playing to his potential. People forget that he started the first game of the season, FWIW.

If he comes back and stays healthy (and Crutcher stays), I really think we are a top 15-20 team, no question. Sadly, the bracket people have already forgetting the name Dayton.

That is spot-on his Per40 stats when prorated to 30 minutes.

Chase's advanced stats are impressive. His offensive rating was the best on the team among scholarship players last year. His PER was second (behind Obi) among scholarship players. His rebound percentage was tops on the team (tied with Jordy).

However, he has only managed to register a grand total of 134 minutes in his college career; three seasons, 14 total games, 8.5 mpg.

it's gotta be UD or bust at this point? I'd think if he was looking to move on somewhere else he'd be in the portal

That's an excellent point. If he is going to play college basketball next year, it looks like it would have to be for UD.

Maybe he's just waiting to see what basketball will look like/ whether it will happen at all, before he makes decisions, just like the rest of us.

He is long and athletic. But lacking the AG-ish intensity on defense, which most players also lack in their first year with Grant. Totally fixable.

I think Chase was still shying away from contact at that point. He just never looked 100% comfortable last year outside of the HBU game.

In that game, though he was a monster. I think the physicality would come with confidence that his head is okay.

Would it be possible for him to take another year on medical red shirt and still be available in 21-22? I know it's an odd thought, but I've heard concussions sometimes take more than a year to overcome. Would the ncaa allow that?

Our staff had plenty of input regarding Chase's potential and his health challenges at Florida.
They loved the player and loved the man. Stats were inconclusive. But insiders saw a very good player. They did not want him to leave. His lack of numbers/opportunities did not scare off Florida or Dayton. They know now a lot more about his off-the-ball game than we have been privy to.

You don't need stats to see his skill. Even in his limited minutes and role he showed flashes of greatness... the kid can play.

They clearly took it easy with Chase to get him back from being rusty for over a year plus the concerns with his concussions.

He was just regaining his confidence and his form back not to mention getting in basketball shape. I have no doubt his stats and minutes per game would have increased nicely throughout the year. Getting him back this year as a basketball player, a Big and an athlete would be very very key for this team.

I just recalled back when Chase was practicing but not eligible to play, a UD reserve player said in an interview that Chase was as athletic as Obi. Not as skilled in basketball, but similar in hops and quickness. Both players are 6'9' and 219 lbs. Obi playing A10 defense was like a Varsity player playing against the JV. He has a lot to hone at the next level when it comes to defense. But with the natural skills to get it done.

Of course offense is a different story.

With injuries he essentially missed most of his first two years of college. He may have been a redshirt sophomore last year but I'm sure he had some significant rust

In addition to the documented challenges facing him, I am guessing that Chase was guarding OBI during practice on a regular basis while he was here....that would injure anyone's psyche.....made him a better player I am sure but may not do much for the confidence level...

Would love to have him back with that obstacle removed....

Just caught the replay of UD/Georgia at Maui. Chase was active for his 12 minutes. Note worthy stuff of Anthony Edwards trying to shake and bake. A steal, 4 rebounds, 3 fouls, and several to's. Lots of energy but a bit puppy-ish due to lack of playing time IMO. I would expect his progression to be a bit like Mikesell's.

Chase has good athleticism for his size and moves well for a big guy. Good starting point defensively

This is great news. Whatever we can get from him I'll take. I hope the Arena operators tone down the music and the lightshows for his sake (and mine!)

I agree, I want Dayton to be GREAT and I want this kid to have fun doing something he loves. I also don't want him to be akin to NFL players who can't walk at age 40.

Be safe Chase. Wear a helmet. Wear a special colored jersey in practice like a quarterback.

right there... there is a professional wrestler who has come back
from a career threatening injury... Josh Alexander suffered a
severe neck injury and now wears one of those wrestling
head gears that collegiate wrestlers wear...

perhaps Chase can wear one of those,
if the NCAA allows it for basketball...

Question Chase back as a player?

So everyone is speculating about Chase coming back as a player.
Maybe he is coming back as a student and a special assistant or manager or the like.
His scholarship was never filled by another recruit. Maybe UD is honoring their commitment and welcoming him back to the family in a non-player capacity.
I'd like him to be able to play, but if he's on the bench in a suit or polo as an advisor or #1 cheerleader, I'll be fine with that as well.

I'm guessing Chase was having some lingering issues and AG sat down with him and said look: it would be great to have you for this title run, but we don't necessarily have to have you. So if you want to take some more time off and give it another go next season when we really do need you, you have my blessing.

Some have speculated that those issues could have been academic, or mental health, or lingering concussion symptoms. Who knows, who cares. All that matters is that he appears to be back and ready to give it another shot. As I've stated elsewhere on this board he is the spitting image of what this team is missing. If he's 100% and ready to contribute this could be another extremely special season.

Let there be no doubt: Chase’s long-term well-being must be the most important consideration. But if he can play significant minutes (about 20/game or so), given that the 4 is probably our weakest spot on the 2020-21 roster, that could mean the difference between a 23-8 regular season and a 26-5 regular season. And I base that “weakest” assessment on our perimeter strength and depth, and the muscle that Jordy and Mo should provide at the 5. Nothing against Zimi, but unless he’s Obi 2.0, we can use some help at the 4.

Nice, Hopefully at some point down the line he will be willing to share his experiences and struggles with everyone to help everyone get a better understanding of the hell he went thru as well as others who have experienced similar post concussion issues.

Here's to great health moving forward and fulfilling your dreams Chase.

So that leaves one scholly open.

Most focus on Chase's concussion, which is huge, but he also went through mono. Trying to fight off the two had to be overwhelming. Having his full strength back will be huge for him in dealing with the concussion aftermaths.

We only saw Chase in limited minutes but I always felt like he did well when he was on the court. Long, athletic, can run the floor. The guy shot 19-24 from the field...thats almost 80%. Defense probably still needs some work but here's an older guy with experience, a college body, and high-bar ability. If healthy, he'll get all the playing time he wants in my opinion.

I think you have to credit Grant, Sullivan, and the entire UD support system on this one. That loyalty even at a distance may have weighed heavily in his decision to return.

I think you have to credit Grant, Sullivan, and the entire UD support system on this one. That loyalty even at a distance may have weighed heavily in his decision to return.
Agree 100%. Hopefully, the way this situation was handled will become common knowledge in recruiting circles an pay dividends in recruiting in the future.

Chase did pretty well in the 8 or so games he played in, and considering that he was far from 100% at the time, I think he could be a major factor this year if he is truly healthy. Mono on top of concussions - wow, we must have only saw him at about 50% in his short season. If that.

Having him at 100% would put us back in the top tier nationally. But I am holding my breath. Anything he can give us will be a welcome bonus.

Just imagine if he has some Obi in him...

A 10-40 breakaway for a dunk looked good last year.

so, since we don't know, we will trust Coach Grant
if he will be used that way, yes?

if he shows an outside shot, that would be great

if not, that is fine too

I'll take a 6'9 dude that can run the floor and be productive in the paint, especially with the range of shooters we have. I don't expect every 6'9 guy we get to be Obi. In fact, I'm relatively young with hopefully many years to go, but I doubt I'll ever see another "Obi" in my lifetime. And, that's alright. Most teams don't.

Welcome back, Chase! I'm thrilled he's back on the roster.

I went back to Chase's high school stats...
his 3 pt shooting was maybe, 25% but he
did not shoot many, that was not what he did..

in the state championship game, he had
25+ points, over 15 rebounds something like that...

if I recall, in his senior year he only had maybe
less than 30 3 pt attempts all season long, more like
26, something like that...

if he can develop a shot great, but we do not
need him for that....

welcome back Chase!
show us what we have been missing, and please
PA system keep the noise down please??

Go Flyers!

Welcome back, Chase! I'm thrilled he's back on the roster.
I think you are shortchanging to some degree the influence that Coach Grant and his staff had on Obi's development. No doubt he had a world of natural talent, but Coach Grant and the staff capitalized on and developed that talent to the maximum. I do not expect Chase to be Obi...but after two more years of Coach Grant's teaching and coaching, I think Chase has a very good chance of being first-team all-conference. Obi would not have developed as he did with any of the Flyers' coaches in recent years.

If I can figure out how to post a picture, I can deliver this. It’s my busy time of the year and I’m out of town, so give us a couple weeks.
