22-5, 13-2 in Conference

Without RIP Big Steve, without KP for early games, without Josh for 3 months, without KD for games, they simply march forward. On to Davidson!
It's another Great Day to be a Flyer!

I want to finish 16-2 in conference. Time to dominate this thing like a certain team from down south used to.

This game has been my biggest fear all season. Davidson is a very difficult place to play and if the Flyers don't jump to a big lead early, I think they lose.

With less than a minute left in Richmond vs Davidson, Gibbs had a nasty collision with a Richmond player and had to leave the game w/ at least a bloody nose. Not sure his condition but he was already wearing a mask to protect a previous injury.

Also, Davidson played without 6-foot-11 Will Magarity (9.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg), a starter bothered by concussion symptoms.

What I like about this team is that they all appear to have defined roles and rarely try to do something outside of what is expected of them. The fact that former starter Mikesell and KDavis now come off the bench and play with a starter's mentality isn't something you see often.

Davidson played a non-conference schedule with a lot of big named schools on it. I referenced this fact earlier in a comment. Maybe, before the season, i misinterpreted the impact. Before the season, i thought that this non- conference schedule would harden them and prepare them to excel in the A10 conference schedule. Davidson has the inside-outside presence going for them with Aldridge and Gibbs.

This harks the question of whether one should schedule the most difficult non-conference schedule that you can or strategically pick a schedule tough enough but with hand-picked games that you can win. I generally believe that Davidson picked a very difficult non-conference schedule. If they had won some of those games, they might have been sitting well.

I'll try to answer that by pointing to what Neil Sullivan, our AD, stated when asked about scheduling. He said the Flyers look to schedule teams from mid major conferences who are likely to be in the top two of their conference, i.e., Winthrop and E. Tenn St. they then look for home and home games against mid P5 conf teams such as Vandy and Alabama. As you can see, they have been very successful as the non con SOS is 35. It's amazing that even in a down year for the A10 the Flyers can have a RPI of 24 at this point.

Anytime you can get NC and Kansas on your schedule, you do it. It might not have worked well for them this season, but if they continue to schedule like this, it could help with recruitment of stronger minded players who don't have their confidence shattered by such a tough schedule.

No, no, i'm not saying that Dayton strategically picked a few big named schools to play and filled in the rest with winnable games thus padding the record. I am just saying that it appears that Davidson played a more difficult non- onference schedule than Dayton. Also, if you compare Dayton's non- conference schedule to someone like Kansas. Dayton played a less vigorous schedule than Kansas in the non-conference.

And I'm saying I would've preferred Davidson's schedule to ours normally. The thing is a .500 record vs top OOC teams is kind of a replacement for playing in a P5 conference and the success rate is usually better. When UD plays a top ranked P5 team early, they tend to be successful because P5 teams don't tend to strategize for us like the A10 would. P5 teams aren't going to decide to go with a zone D because UD has trouble with it. They are going to go in to the game thinking our best vs their best and we probably will win. No need to change for them.

Due to the above, is why we can go to Maui and knock off a Gonzaga, almost beat a Baylor and destroy a Cal. Then lose to SLU, RI, VCU, Richmond and SJU to start our A10 schedule. While that's an extreme situation we had in 2013-2014, there are going to be bad losses in the A10 every season and we need to load up in OOC prior. I don't think teams lose in the A10 because they scheduled too difficult in OOC, I think it's that the A10 bottomfeeder teams do a great job finding the weaknesses of the top teams.

Post Conference History

Since I'm not superstitious :-/ ... *IF* we win out, this senior class will deliver our most successful regular season in the conference era (since 1988). Winning the tourney in Pittsburgh would be the exclamation point.

Looking back, can't overstate Purnell's role in turning the program around, or how Gregory under-performed in conference. Maybe tougher in those days (Xavier, Temple, Charlotte) ... and maybe easier for Archie, swapping those elites and Butler for VCU, Richmond, Mason, and Davidson? Before and after the transition, A-10 conference RPI has consistently hovered ~#8.

All-time UD history, by year:
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/dayton/

2006 A-10 as example, Dayton was 6-10:

Maybe a bit tougher in those days, but, it was never the tough games that caused us to tank in conference. It was highly beatable teams that always tanked our conference record.

The math says Dayton has a non-con SOS of 60 and Davidson has a non-con SOS of 151. Not even close.

Kansas non-con SOS 52. About the same as the Flyers.

I hope everyone appreciates how great it is to be a Flyer fan right now. For those of us that are old enough to have experienced the end of JOB and the beginning of Purnell, these last few years have been so sweet.

Consider these two stats:
In February, Dayton won 3 road conference games (3-0).
From '92-'93 to '96-'97 (5 seasons), Dayton won 2 conference road games (2-33).

Whatever happens the rest of the way, enjoy the ride.
