A Little of Dis, a Liitle of Dat

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Here’s something to pass the time while we all wait to find out when the Flyers will face-off against the Bearcats in Cincy:

-- A recent feature story on ESPN cites the first known instance of college fans rushing the basketball court to be -- can I have a drum roll please? -- the University of Dayton Flyer Faithful after the 1968 NIT Championship Game at MSG in NYC!

I want to know who the kid was hanging on the rim. He’s in his 60s now. A tip of the "FTS" cap to the Elder Swampette for finding this vid.

-- Nice piece in the latest edition of the University of Dayton Magazine on sports moments thru the eyes of UD alums. Contributors include former DDN UD beat writer Bucky Albers, Billy Mayo, former UD TV analyst Margaret Brosko, Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald and UD Pride’s very own “The Fly” alias Allan Walton of Pittsburgh.

-- If you have HBO, there are a couple of sports-related stories that are worth seeking out:

The first is “Bird and Magic” a 90 minute look at Larry and Earvin and their unique friendship. Towards the end, Bryant Gumbel puts the impact the diametrically-opposed duo had on professional basketball in perspective. He matter-of-factly proclaims that “people say Michael Jordan saved the NBA. Bullsh*t. Larry and Magic saved the NBA.”

The second is a piece contained in HBO’s “Real Sports” on Steve Mariucci and Tom Izzo, who grew up joined at the hip in Iron Mountain, MI. Mariucci admits that some people thought the two were a little ‘too friendly’ since they lived together for 7 years and always brought each other as a date to their respective sports banquets at Northern Michigan U. “Hey, it was a free meal” Mariucci exclaimed.

-- Arch in the DDN with a piece from earlier in the month on the best names in college basketball:

-- We have a motion to expand the NCAA Tournament from 65 to 96 teams.

All those in favor:

Opposed?

-- A nice game summary from earlier in the HS season from OHSH.com on Class of 2013 sensation Jaaron Simmons of Alter:

-- Like I’ve told the Swampettes, there is nothing ‘free’ about FreeCreditReport.com:

Step 1: Produce catchy commercials.

Step 2: Charge people for something that they can get elsewhere for nothing.

Step 3: Profit.

-- An in-depth look from The Atlantic on “The Sports Guy”:

-- Good news: get your income taxes done for free. Bad news: you have to attend a New Jersey Nets game to collect:

-- Hey look, it’s a movie featuring “That Guy.” Here’s a handy compendium (with pictures) of every “That Guy” in films and television:

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
