clemson loses

Poor Olivier Purnell , he has never won a game in the NCAA Tournement.

Does anyone want Purnell back as a coach ? not me.

The 10 Worst Active NCAA Tournament Coaches (prior to this year's games)

Purnell has the worst PASE {Performance Against Seed Expectations} of any active coach, at -0.770. Given his dubious ability to turn any NCAA seed into a losing seed, Clemson's an upset special waiting to happen in the NCAAs.

I'm not really a big fan of BG, but he is definitely a better coach than Purnell is. OP is a choker on the biggest stage and really the only stage that matters. Dunphy is also notoriously bad come tournament time. I would take Gregory over either one of those guys any day. Nothing would be more painful than for us to go to the NCAA tournament every year only to lose in the first round. In that sense, I am happy we have Gregory and are not cursed with a Purnell or Dunphy as our coach. Winning in the regular season is nice, but isn't worth very much if you can't get it done in March.

I can find a more recent list, but two years ago, these were the others (besides OP) who were in the bottom 10 of the PACE

Fran Dunphy - Temple
Bobby Lutz - Charlotte
Mike Montgomery - California
Rick Stansbury - Mississippi State
Bob Huggins - West Virginia
Lorenzo Romar - Washington
Greg McDermott - Iowa State
Dana Altman - Creighton
Brad Brownell - Wright State

I will forever be a fan of OP and will root for him. Maybe others could have done it better, but he is the one who took the shot at the UD job when we were really down and brought us back from the brink. I was hoping Clemson won today.

Another way to look at it...
Fran Dunphy has a 1-12 lifetime record in the NCAA tournament and has lost his last 10 in a row. Purnell is 0-6 lifetime.

I agree for the most part (though I do feel he let UD down with his last couple of recruiting classes) and I do think OP's biggest strength is in rebuilding programs - however, he does seem to have trouble getting programs over the hump to get to another level

I think this sums up how I feel. I like the fact that we are winning in March(although the NIT). Until we can prove otherwise(like X has) I want to enjoy the postseason victories in the NIT. When we prove we can make it to the NCAA and win, then I will be upset at a season like this, no matter how great the expectations are.

Oliver did a great job rebuilding the UD program, but after his 2000 NCAA tournament appearance he spent a lot more time looking for a better job than he did recruiting. Take a look at UD's recruits for 2001, 2002, and 2003 and you'll see what I mean. He played all his cards for a great 2003 season (we were 24-6) and a better job which worked for him, but left UD with a weak and untalented roster. Many at UD, were very happy to see him leave when he did.
