Flyers Rumble Past Ramblers 4-0

DAYTON (OH) -- A pair of Dayton goals in each half ruined Loyola-Chicago's Friday night as the Flyers improved to 7-2-0 with a decisive 4-0 win under perfect soccer weather at Baujan Field. Loyola falls to 2-7-0.

The Flyers wasted no time cranking up the jets as Head Coach Mike Tucker's squad put pressure on the Rambler defense soon after kickoff. Just five minutes in, senior Jerica DeWolfe called her own number from 25 yards out and blasted a ball over the out-stretched hands of Rambler goalkeeper Katie Groesch for the 1-0 lead.

Over the next 15 minutes, UD continued to dominate in all phases against a team that, quite frankly, had few skills both offensively and defensively. The Flyers pinned Loyola's ears back for an extended stretch, maintaining pressure in the offensive third. The foot of Colleen Williams was responsible for much of the domination as she continually muscled her way past defenders on the left baseline and served terrific crosses in the box. Unfortunately, finishing inside the box by UD teammates was once again a shortcoming, allowing Loyola to milk the first half clock and cling to just a one-goal deficit.

Over the last 15 minutes of the first half, the run of play deteriorated significantly. Dayton fell victim to happy feet syndrome and lost their speed and quickness advantage by taking too many touches of the ball. The slower play allowed the Ramblers to recover in time to poke balls away and prevent Dayton from moving forward on offense. With finishing issues inside the box and poor first touches in the midfield, the first half looked like it would end with UD asking themselves why the match wasn't put away by intermission.

Williams erased some of that sentiment in the final five seconds with the proverbial midfield Hail Mary blast to beat the halftime whistle. She tattooed the ball from 40 yards out at 44:55 and found the back of the net four seconds later and just one second before the referee blew his whistle for halftime orange slices and Gatorade. The impressive piece of individual brilliance put the Flyers up 2-0 in what had to be the latest first half goal in Flyer history.

Dayton out-shot Loyola 10-5 in the first half and attempted the only corner kick.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was Dayton's best effort since the opening minutes of the match. Senior Kelly Blumenschein rocketed a low-driven ball to the far left post in the 52nd minute to put UD up 3-0 and basically stick a fork in Loyola's back side. The well-struck ball had the goalkeeper beat all the way and was Blumenschein's first goal of the year.

The Ramblers started to wear down after Blumenschein's goal, unable to compete physically with UD's stronger players. Kelsey Owen found the net on a cross at the near post from 7 yards out just four minutes later to make the score 4-0.

Loyola's best scoring chance came mid-way through the second half when a Rambler striker exploited a speed advantage on the left side and attacked goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers in the goal mouth. Dayton's defense held and turned the scoring chance away.

Over the last 25 minutes, Dayton called off the hit squad and emptied the bench, or the score might have been 6-0 or 7-0 with more chances and better finishing. Loyola also flooded the pitch with subs -- including a new goalkeeper. As the benches battled it out, the run of play turned -- predictably -- more disjointed, but each side continued to play the match out with a decent effort.

Overall stats: Dayton out-shot Loyola 22-7 and dominated corner kicks 6-1.

Williams was a one-woman bully on the pitch, shaking off defenders like flies. Time and again she got around the back line by pushing her way through like a football halfback. There was no question mark as to who the most talented offensive player on the field was, and Williams continues to back it up every week. Friday's effort earned her a goal and two assists, keeping her at the top of the A10 scoring race. In the back line, Kathleen Beljan swept up problem balls left, right, and center in routine fashion and operated at a pace others have trouble matching.

It's hard to make too much of the match considering Loyola was anemic talent-wise, but Dayton cashed in for four goals and the best players played like the best players again. Against a more talented goalkeeper the first two goals (mortar rounds from another zip code) probably don't find the back of the net, but UD created enough scoring opportunities at other times to have pocketed a few more goals with better finishing. The final score was a fair account of the match.

What Dayton continues to lack are others around Williams and Beljan to step up and ease their work-load -- more so Williams. As terrific as she plays, it's not a problem against the Loyolas of the world. Against A10 tournament and NCAA teams however, others in the Flyer offense must step up and polish off Williams' dinner plate when she sets the table for near-gimmes inside the box. While she had two assists Friday evening, it could have been four or five.

What fans can't take away from UD is their ability to beat teams they should thus far in the 2010 season. There are no bad losses and the Flyers must continue to pad the win column as the season continues. The next opportunity is Sunday evening at cross-town rival Wright State.
