Vegas Baby, Vegas Chapter II

LAS VEGAS (NV) -- “From the Swamp” is reporting to you once again from Lost Wages, this time to attend the HR Tech Show at Mandalay Bay. Those of you with better-than-average memories may recall the first “FTS” installment of “Vegas Baby, Vegas” originated from here three years ago:

http://www.udpride.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7260

The featured item in the SkyMall magazine on the plane out here was an RC car equipped with an RC squirt gun. Because if you are a grownup who is going to play with a toy intended for an 11 year old, you might as well go all in, am I right?

The line at the taxi stand at McCarren Airport was not unlike those found at “It’s a Small World After All” at Disney World. I told the woman in front of me there better be a killer amusement park ride at the end of this maze. My cabbie informed me that they were expecting 10,000 people to arrive today for a State Farm Insurance convention, which goes a long way in explaining the wait. When the State Farm Actuary Department hits the blackjack tables Las Vegas will never be the same!

On with the links!

-- Great profile of Devon Scott, the Columbus Northland PF prospect who is seriously considering UD and would thus join his HS teammate Jalen Robinson and (hopefully) AAU buddy Teddy Hawkins:

-- The Flyer News checks in with a piece on the growing trend of UD signing transfers from BCS schools:

-- Got a really nice note from Nick Charles’ widow about the mini-tribute to her husband that I penned a few months back:

Hi

Your article is so touching. This is Nick's widow and I can tell you Nick was 5'11” for the record. I have several medical documents – he was 6 feet as a kid though. All the best to you and thanks for keeping his memory alive in such a touching story. You captured him!

Best,

Cory Charles

Okay, so after 10+ years my memory of Nick’s height wasn’t so great. The point I was trying to make was that Nick was shorter in stature than he appeared to be on CNN Sports Tonight.

Here is a link to that piece on Nick:

-- Former Flyer Brandon Spearman has some pretty good schools looking at him, according to HoopsJuco.com:

-- More than a few similarities in the departure of the skippers of my two favorite sports teams, BG from UD and the surprising exit of Terry “Tito” Francona from the Red Sox. Both guys left after eight years on the job; BG and Tito both did so of their own volition and the lack of locker room chemistry played a large part in their respective decisions. The coverage in the Boston papers has been just brutal, especially the hack jobs being turned in by Dan “Curly Headed Boyfriend” Shaughnessy of The Boston Globe. Shank is reveling once again in Sox fans’ misery like he did foisting his “Curse of the Bambino” BS on us for so many years prior to 2004. The one voice of reason has been Lunenburg, MA native Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston.com.

Here is Gordon’s explanation of what went down:

-- This year marks the 40th anniversary of Spencer Haywood signing with the NBA as an underclassman. YouTube provides the video goodness:

-- I’m shocked, shocked I tell you to learn that Kris Humphries of “Keeping up with the Kardashians” fame is a flaming jagoff:

http://beyondthearc.nbcsports.com/20...sas-knew-that/

You know the kid must really be a total toolbox when the guys on the Kansas team actually went to then-Jayhawks coach Roy Williams and told him not to sign Kris.

-- Andy Katz with a law school primer for college coaches (in any sport) on why you don’t want to grow up to be Bruce Pearl:

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bask...nessee-fallout

Katz’s take to Point #1, “Coaches have for years taken what appears to be a minor violation and turned it into something major by the way they have handled themselves upon being interviewed” seems to have Jim Tressel’s fingerprints all over it.

-- The following is one of the scariest things I have ever seen: actual eyewitness film from the tsunami in Japan. Fortunately, the driver of the car, equipped with a dashboard camera, can be seen early-on, wisely abandoning the vehicle and scrambling to safety. Police were able to locate his car later and a video expert retrieved the footage:

Those semi-trucks going down the street are not driving on it—they are being swept down it by the awesome power of the rising waters of the tsunami. Unbelievable!

-- This is the dearly departed Heidi the German possum. Click on the link and you get three guesses: what she was most famous for?

Looks like Kim Kardashian agrees with the UK team's assessment of Kris Humphries, as she is divorcing him after 72 days of marital bliss:

Supposedly, their wedding cost $3 million but Kim made $18 mil off of it. That works out to $250K/day. Nice work if you can find it!
