NCAA Field Update

I went though the Division I conferences and determined who won the automatic bids to the NCAA. Several Conference do not have a Conference Championship. They do this because their conference is so strong that they feel to have a conference championship wuld reduce the total number of bids their conference might receive. The list below is sorted by Conference winner by RPI ranking. The following set is teams that have not won there Conference title however they place in the Top 25 in RPI or in the AVCA poll. Next on the list is those teams that are in the hunt for there conference championship this weekend. Finally, rounding out the list is those teams that Might be on the bubble for a bid.

Miami or Ohio (won't be both), Cleveland State, perhaps Louisville, and Dayton would make a nice sub-regional here in town. My concern is that the ladies keep their focus for these last two matches. They had to be at the top of their game for the last 2 weeks - which were the last regular season Xavier match and the A-10 tournament. Can they keep that edge for this weekend - knowing they are already in the dance? Last year I believe they went to California for a couple of matches after the A-10 tournament and really played poorly - when a pair of wins might have garnered an at-large berth (although a long shot). They actually went 3-6 in their last nine matches last year. All that being said, this is a different team and a different year. Let's finish it out in style.

3 From A-10?

I just spent the last hour doing the same thing. (My turkey dinner isn't ready until 6 pm EST - so what else do I have to do?) Anyway, here's my list by conference champions (I don't think I missed one, but might have). I'd like to see TH's last school - Robert Morris - make a trip down to play us. That would be fun.

1. American East – Albany
2. Atlantic 10 - Dayton
3. Atlantic Coast - Clemson
4. Atlantic Sun - Lipscomb
5. Big 12 - Nebraska
6. Big East – St John’s
7. Big South - Liberty
8. Big Sky – TBD Nov 24 (Sacramento St)
9. Big Ten – Penn State
10. Big West – Cal Poly
11. Colonial - Delaware
12. Conference USA - Tulsa
13. Horizon – Cleveland State
14. Ivy League - Princeton
15. Metro Atlantic - Siena
16. Mid-American – Miami OH
17. Mid-Eastern – Florida A&M
18. Missouri Valley – TBD Nov 24 ( MO St or Wichita St) both getting in
19. Mountain West – TBD Nov 24 (UNLV-BYU-CO St)* all three getting in
20. Northeast – Robert Morris
21. OVC – Tennessee State
22. Pacific 10 – Stanford or Washington
23. Patriot - American
24. Southeastern - Florida
25. Southern – Col. of Charleston
26. Southland – Texas State
27. Southwestern – Alabama A&M
28. Sun Belt – Middle Tennessee
29. The Summit League – South Dakota State
30. West Coast – San Diego or Santa Clara (tied - Santa Clara's RPI is high, but I think they both get in)
31. Western Athletic - Hawaii

AT LARGE POOL (based on Nov 16 RPIs)
32. Stanford or Washington
33. Texas
34. USC
35. Wisconsin
36. UCLA
37. Kansas State
38. UNLV (lost to BYU)*
39. San Diego or Santa Clara
40. Colorado State*
41. Oklahoma
42. California
43. BYU*
44. Michigan
45. Purdue
46. Ohio (lost to Miami OH - RPI will drop, but they get in)
47. Mississippi
48. Louisville
49. Duke
50. Minnesota
51. LSU
52. Long Beach State
53. Michigan State
54. Xavier (lost to Dayton – might drop RPI, but could also go up like last time)
55. Western KY
56. Oregon
57. Wichita State or Missouri State
58. Alabama
59. Pepperdine
60. Kentucky
61. New Mexico State
62. Missouri
63. Indiana
64. St Louis
65. Iowa – (UNLV-BYU-CO ST will win conf tourney – so this is the “64” cut line)
66. Marshall
67. Illinois
68. Loyola Marymount
69. Arizona State
70. Northwestern
71. Creighton
72. Utah
73. New Mexico
74. Oregon State
75. UNI
76. Santa Clara
77. Georgia Tech
78. Florida Int’l
79. Villanova
80. Bowling Green

I see BOTH Miami, OH (auto bid) and Ohio U (rankings/RPI) getting in. Plus I can see THREE A-10 schools getting in. Wouldn't that be something for a conference who has never had an At-Large entry to have TWO this year + Dayton as the auto-bid. Although, I can also see them not including St Louis -- they are really "on-the-bubble" if their RPI holds. But their RPI could also go up. Xavier's RPI went up from 38 to 34 after they lost to Dayton in the 2nd match of the regular season. So THREE FROM THE A-10 is a real possibility.

Anyway this goes, watching ESPNU on Sunday night is going to be exciting. Dayton will certainly be talked about - especially if we win out -- and the A-10 should also make some waves. It will help if Xavier and Dayton win-out at the MAC tourney this weekend. Sunday could be a really great day for A-10 volleyball.
