Let’s face it: if OP can’t beat the other schools to the well-known, quality HS players, then he has no choice but to uncover and sign the unknown, quality HS recruits. Enter Chris Spears and Jeff Bro-Grebe.
— Based on what respected recruiting analyst Mike Sullivan of TSN said about Jeff…
“He played in Orlando this past summer for the Atlanta All Stars. RivalsHoops.com saw him play and he showed the ability to block shots, grab rebounds and out-battle people inside. So give plenty of credit to the Dayton coaching staff for doing their research and finding a talented player who will likely make a major impact in their program down the road.”
…I roll the dice on a kid like Bro-Grebe every time.
— Speaking of Bro-Grebe, several posters on the Message Board have questioned Jeff’s strength and musculature, as he’s listed at 6’8″ and 200 lbs. I was watching game 5 of the 1987 NBA Playoffs between the Celts and the Pistons on ESPN Classic the other night. Dennis Rodman, then a quiet, unassuming, un-tatooed rookie was listed at 6’8″ and 210. I’m not saying Bro-Grebe is the second coming of “The Worm” but I’d settle for anything close to DR’s numbers.
— Rodman didn’t earn the nickname “The Worm” because of any personality deficiency (although he has plenty), but rather for video game proficiency. Dennis would really get into it and writhe like a worm when he played vids. Supposedly, when he was in his prime (and before he met Madonna), if you checked any video game in the airport of any NBA city, the name of the high scorer was usually “Worm”.
— Also on the Message Board, Joe Sutherland got me started on nicknames for this year’s edition of the Flyers. His particular fave was Warren “Don’t Freeze Me Like They Did Ted” Williams. Already got one for each for the 2 signees: Chris “No Relation to Britney” Spears and Jeff “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My” Bro-Grebe.
— Whatever happened to Steve Pittman?
— Well, that didn’t take too long: Alex Carmona has left prep school for parts unknown. Guess the nightlife in Winchendon, MA was too hot for him to handle.
— Matt Schwade at FlyerHoops.net was the first one to discover that the Flyer’s open scrimmage is on Saturday, October 19th from 9am-12 noon. Hmmmm…perhaps Mrs. Swampy and I will come down for Parents Weekend after all!
— I got my UDPride.com T-shirt, how about you?
— The younger Swampette got to play Powder Puff Football during Spirit Week at her HS. She lined up at MLB, was the defensive captain and got to call all of the blitzes. Let me tell you, it was more like Rowdy Ruff Football. Her junior team beat the seniors 12-0 and the vanquished Class of ’03 is still wondering what hit ’em.
— Great piece of writing by Tom Archdeacon in the DDN on former Flyer great Chuck Grigsby. I never got to see Chuck play, only as a color guy on UD TV games for Channel 7 and to look at him, you’d never guess he was the enforcer-type. Get better soon, Chuck!
— Posters on the Message Board wondered who is the current Flyers’ version of Chuck Grigsby? Look no further than Nate Green.
— The upcoming season will no doubt have a weird feeling to it for Big Nate. For the first time in 8 years (4 at St. Vincent Paolotti HS in MD and 4 at UD) he won’t be lacin’ ’em up with his buddy David Morris.
