After Thursday’s disappointing loss to the Temple Owls at the UD Arena, Flyer fans were hoping for a little redemption on the road, where Dayton was an outstanding 5-1. But instead, fans were served a cold cup of traditional Dayton Flyer road hoops, this time against St. Joseph’s in front of 3,200. Dayton goes to 10-6 on the season with an 84-71 defeat to the Hawks. Many things looked all too familiar on Sunday in Philadelphia, but not in the beginning. Dayton, now 1-2 in conference play, opened up the contest with some solid shooting, leading 24-20 at one point in the opening period.

The game see-sawed back and forth in the first half, but two scoring droughts put Dayton in comeback mode and back on their heels. St. Joe’s had the advantage at halftime 40-32. In general, Dayton just didn’t match St. Joseph’s intensity level, especially on the defensive end of the floor. The Flyers became lazy at times on defense, especially around the perimeter. St. Joe’s moved the ball very well, creating numerous open looks from 3-point territory.

The Hawks tallied 7-16 from beyond the arc for 44%, and shot an outstanding 60% for the game. The Hawks got another strong performance from Rookie of the Year candidate Jameer Nelson, who added 10 point and 10 assists. Nelson was questionable for Sunday’s game after an ankle sprain earlier in the week, but you wouldn’t have guessed he was playing on a hobbled wheel. The St. Joe’s deep bench thoroughly outscored Dayton’s, with Na’im Crenshaw contributing 16 points on the night. Mr. Reliable Keith Waleskowski only managed 3 rebounds and 4 points on the afternoon.Tony Stanley shot fairly well back in his hometown — going 5-12 — and finished up with 18 points. However, Brooks Hall and Ramod Marshall had subpar nights, combining for 4-17 from the field. The Flyers had trouble creating medium-range shots, often relying on the 3-ball or an out-of control drive to the basket. To make matters worse, poor free throw shooting often negated a solid attempt at the hoop.

The Dayton Flyers look to regroup after dropping its second decision in a row. The Flyers face Massachusettes on Thursday in Amherst.
