Former Centerville team mates enter portal

Guard Gabe Cupps Indiana

Forward Jonathan Powell WVU... WVU coach just took IU job.

Could Powell follow to IU?

Or does UD have a chance with both guys?

My guess is, Powell follows the money, whatever the source. He switched high schools. He’ll switch colleges.

Powell to UNC...didn't see that coming!

I’m guessing they saw a need to get more size on the wings…and had the pockets to make that happen.

We recruited Powell, but he didn’t show a lot of interest. He signed initially with Xavier but then decommitted and went to WVU. I’m not sure Cupp had much interest in Dayton, either, but I wouldn’t mind seeing both end up as Flyers. I suspect both will attract P4 offers, so it’s a long shot.

This kid from Dayton, Juan Cranford Jr. - watching him now for St. Francis...that one got away from the staff. I'd take him in a heartbeat

St Francis just announced they're going D3 in all sports next season so he may be available.

Do we want Cupp and Powell because they are good, or local youth?

Maybe because they’re both over 6’0.

Cupps is only 6'2", so more of the same.  He also had knee surgery in Dec.

Powell could be a good replacement for Santos.  Similar size and skill set.

Powell is 6-4. He's not replacing Santos at Forward.

Might be hyped up, but the WVU roster lists Powell as 6-6. At any rate, he’s a guard, not a power forward.

We will need a 3 with Cheeks graduating. I think T-Bone pointed out that we now have a real need on the wing. He makes a great point. AG ge we rally went 9 deep playing Mali (1), Posh (1), Bennett (2), Cheeks (3), Conner (4,3), Simon (4), Nate (4), Jack (5), Key (5), and Frenchie (5). I don’t include Mousa as he played the 2 and some 3, but he only played in 20 games compared to Simon’s 30.

Powell could fill a big need at the 3, with size that’s similar to Brea’s at the same age.

Powell would be more of a replacement for Cheeks than for Santos.

How are Powell and Cupp here this weekend. Are they just visiting tomorrow? I can’t imagine that there are many players on the current roster who would be great to spend time with.

I’ll check my source, but to add to the drama, supposedly OSU has offered Cupps $600k…which is only a rumor because only an idiot would offer that kind of money to a backup PG coming off knee surgery.

FWIW, I commented 3+ years ago that I felt Cupps would be a backup at best for UD due to size…I reffed a couple of his games and have seen better. Regardless, Ohio POY winners are typically studs so maybe I was being too hard…but I’m pretty sure I was on target with his abilities.

It's no longer 'supposedly'...OSU has made an offer that I believe Cupps cannot refuse. Stay tuned.

UD has plenty of idiots in the administration (and plenty of doctors) so where can we find MORE of these guys coming off knee/ankle/shoulder surgery because, they're probably low risk bargins...

There are plenty of folks at Indiana who thought he could contribute. That means something. I wonder how much we paid Posh this year. Cupp is worth more. It would be great if our 3 guard offense didn’t rely on one guy to pound the ball out top. Can you imagine what Cupp, Allen, and Bennett could do if the ball and players moved? Of course, we learned this year that reality is far from what we imagined.

No UD players are in the portal so far AFAIK.

I am not savvy enough to know where to find the latest tranfer portal entrants, but this site tracks the entries, not sure if this site does a good job of staying current.

Apparently the school must enter the entries into the portal within 2 days of notification.

You can just filter for Dayton.

From the link:

Transfer Portal Info

The 247Sports Transfer Portal includes players who have either announced their intent to enter or have officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. Under the college transfer policy, when a student-athlete informs a school that he wishes to transfer, that institution has two business days to enter that athlete's name into a national transfer portal. Once the student-athlete's name is in the database, other coaches from any school can contact that individual.

Yeah, I guess, or maybe the 247 website hasn't been updated yet because there is a backlog of entries for them to enter if there was a glut of entries that showed up last night at midnight.

GW III is back in the portal. He lasted 1 year at Richmond. He had an injury this year, which limited his playing time. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Did he go to Chaminade Julienne High School in Dayton?

Yes. IIRC, he was a teammate of Evan Dickey and Makai Grant.

He played in 22 games  as a freshman at Michigan and transferred to Richmond. Fwiw, Mousa had more baskets (7) this year than GWIII did and a freshman (5).

I think it’s going to be another wild portal season. I wonder if it will ever get to a reasonable level? I think the law would allow a contract to be upheld if it contained multiple years unless the school lets you out of it. So a school could hold a player under contract until say the last 2-3 days of the portal season and then release him if they haven’t landed a replacement? That would make players think twice about declaring they wanted out of their contract and to enter the portal. With the probable pay the player anyway you want environment coming down the pipeline, it would be no problem to be out of scholarships. And you can hold one until the last minute - or January anyway.

I wish Mali well. He will forever be a Flyer. That said, I hope whoever we have playing PG next year has a signature move that doesn’t include having a guy 8” taller block his shot on a drive to the hoop.

Don’t feel that way at all about Malachi. I must be honest and admit I’m glad he’s moving on, but I wish him well. I believe he played hard and tried his best unlike another guard on this year’s team. I believe Malachi’s shortcomings this season were a result of not being as talented as he was projected to be. I don’t know if his injuries took a toll on him and his abilities, but he obviously couldn’t finish at the rim, was not a good outside shooter and made some horrible turnovers at the end of a couple games. In his defense his ice water free throws at the end of our last regular season game at VCU, iced that victory for us.

I felt AG had way too much confidence in him as so many close games ended with having Smith drive to the basket, almost always to have his shot rejected. Remember, Amzil’s thrilling bucket to beat Kansas at the buzzer came after Malachi’s drive to the bucket was easily swatted away to the corner where Amzil retrieved it and the rest is history.

I’ll miss Mali. While I think he gave us all he could, he really wasn’t quite the same after that injury in the A-10 semifinals his freshman year. He’s battled through so many health issues and finally got to enjoy an injury-free senior season. Yes, there were ups and downs, but he always had a smile and seemed to enjoy his time at UD. I wish him luck wherever he lands.

I’m surprised that Jack hit the portal. I can’t see him being anything but a back-up in even the lesser conferences. He was the only 5 backing up Frenchie. He would have been in a spot to see 12-15 minutes per game. I wonder if he knows someone else is going to be committing. Could it be that he wasn’t going to see an increase in playing time? It’s an interesting decision.

What strikes me about all this is the speed of the portal decisions. I mean, the team played its last game Saturday. I doubt Grant even had a chance to have his postseason one-on-one player meetings. No doubt Smith and Jack — maybe others to come — had their minds made up long before the final buzzer. Could be portal greed, could be playing time, could be just wanting a new environment. Whatever, it’s hard to fault these guys testing the waters in this new compensatory era.

It's simply being first.  These guys know more about what is going on inside the walls than we will ever know and that's telling. Jack isn't going to be that guy on a team better than a dayton. Mali... wish him luck. Had some good interactions with him, but he's not the PG to get this program where it needs to be.

I don't see anyone on this roster leaving for portal greed. I assume Smith will get something but I don't think anyone is backing up the Brinks truck for anyone here. I wish both Smith and Jack well. I think they are both effort guys. Not sure either of them had the basketball IQ to overcome their limitations.

I think you'd be shocked at how much a 10 ppg player can get in the transfer portal.

I have no doubt... I fully admit to the money being shocking.  But I would be much more shocked if it went to 4 year players than to players with upside. But  best of luck to them if someone is offering it.
