Former Centerville team mates enter portal

Guard Gabe Cupps Indiana

Forward Jonathan Powell WVU... WVU coach just took IU job.

Could Powell follow to IU?

Or does UD have a chance with both guys?

My guess is, Powell follows the money, whatever the source. He switched high schools. He’ll switch colleges.

I’m guessing they saw a need to get more size on the wings…and had the pockets to make that happen.

I agree, I think the money will always be the motivating factor.  Program culture and coach and things like that are probably a tie breaker.  But, if everyone's dollars spend the same, it is potentially a very important tie breaker.

Too late for Melvin Council.  He transfers from St. Bonaventure to Kansas.

Too late for Luke Bamgboye.  He transfers from VCU to Texas Tech.

Too late for Wes Enis.  He transfers from Lincoln Memorial to USF (South Florida).

Too late for Gavin Griffiths.  He transfers from Nebraska to Temple.

I don't understand what this post is trying to say.  Is it your contention that Coach Grant is not doing his job because none of these transfers ended up at UD?  Is it your contention that these players are better than the transfers that have committed to UD?  Is it your point that instead of the hundreds of players in the portal, there are now four fewer players in the portal?

Gerald Kaminski: To answer your question,  there was a published list from the Dayton Daily News of players that Dayton basketball had contacted.  I took this list plus a few names mentioned on this blog and I have been tracking them.  I was curious if the published list would lead to visits and then how many visits would turn into commitments.  So far, there has not been a single match.  What does this mean? Does it mean that the list from the Dayton Daily News was worthless?  Does it mean that the names mentioned on this blog are worthless?  Does it mean that Grant has missed on all of his original targets?  It does seem to show that the guys on this combined list are all division 1 coveted players because these guys are transferring to what seems to be very interesting places.  There are only a few names left on this combined list.  Does it mean that those players left on the list have been picked over?

I am having fun tracking the list.  So, I’ll watch to the last guy is picked. There are only a couple guys left on the original list.

Names left from original list are: Pettway, Forrest, Henry, McClenden. Names mentioned on this blog or other places: Okojie, Griffith, Amzil, Miller, Gardner, Potter.

Now that I know Griffiths is going elsewhere, I can post this version of a “separated at birth” photo. Seriously, I hope he can overcome his injury (as long as they don’t play us), but seeing those goggles reminded me of this…

I was referring to Rayvon Griffith from Cincinnati above as still available; not Gavin Griffiths now at Temple.

And because I know Gavin Griffiths isn’t coming here, I felt more comfortable in sharing that photo of Jon Cryer from the movie Hot Shots. I wouldn’t have done it if he was going to be one of our guys.

You assume that AG was interested in these players. AG has been very clear about doing a better job of recruiting in the portal. That would seem to include not finalizing a deal with someone that doesn’t check the necessary boxes. There may be initial interest that ebbs due to a red flag. The interest may wane if a player is looking for guaranteed minutes. The interest may go away because the player has an over inflated sense of self. Of course, it’s also possible that another school swoops in with significantly more money. There are certainly players you have named who would be getting back up minutes. Perhaps that player can get more back up minutes on another team. Perhaps the player can get significantly more money as a back up elsewhere. There is more to it than you seem to be acknowledging.

Here is the old catch-22.  Do you recruit the best player available or pick strictly by position?  Dayton has 5 guards on the team, now.  I guess a 6th guard wouldn’t hurt.  You never seem to have enough guards.

My opinion is to take the best players you can get and then figure out a way to make it work.

If the reports are true and this person has 3 years left, you can recruit saying. "Listen we have 2 guards graduating.... you earn your minutes and there will be no one in front of you"  UD is not Kentucky - meaning they can recruit optimistically for a "long-career at Dayton"... AND you can never have too many guards.

With a little digging outside of Flyerhoops (I don’t have a subscription), it’s not hard to figure out who this mystery guard is. Out of deference to LHS and Matt Schwade, I won’t reveal the name. But I will say he’s a former top 100 four-star recruit at a P4 school that didn’t get much playing time as a freshman. He would be an excellent get (as always, on paper) for AG and staff. Fingers crossed.

I just had a, never going to happen, thought.  Both Amzil and Sissoko are in the portal.  I am assuming that they have one year of eligibility left.  If Grant just inserted these two experienced guys back into the roster, this team would be most interesting.

I'd welcome both back with open arms. Grant seems to struggle to get teams ready to play. His best teams have been the most experienced/played together the longest. Anyone we can add who has already gone through the AG experience would be a boost IMO.

More transfers from the Dayton Daily News list of players contacted by Dayton or mentioned on this blog.

Too late for Baraka Okojie from George Mason and Memphis.  He transfers to Mercer.

Too late for Rayvon Griffith from Cincinnati.  He transfers to Kent State.

Too late for Will McClendon from San Jose State.  He transfers to North Texas.

What makes you think it’s too late? You still seem to be under the impression that every player UD contacts or mentioned in connection with UD is an actual target of AG. I would think it’s obvious to all that AG could move on past a player for an incalculable number of reasons. It has been mentioned many times that AG is focused on the player’s “why.” Does this just ring hollow with you?

If he wants to keep posting this stuff he should just drop the "too late for." Like you said, that implies that AG wanted the guy.

Pope was a pretty decent post player in his day, so maybe Potter will develop at UK. It was almost a given that he could have developed here. Oh, well. NEXT!!

Off the original Dayton Daily News list of Dayton basketball contacts, Christian Henry from Eastern Michigan transfers to Fordham.  So, he will be an opponent.

Double thinking about this:  I double checked the web site.  This guy on the original Dayton Flyer contact list (Christian Henry) is transferring to Fordham.  In fact, I see 6 guys from the portal transferring to Fordham.  Why would anyone transfer to Fordham?  I am reading that Fordham is on probation.

Montgomery and Heard have higher ratings. They were better gets. At this point, AG is most likely pursuing a 4. The stable is full with guards.

If I recall AG has gotten some players in early June over the years. With it being very very quite I don't believe he is done, just that they are working the portal and HS recruit areas for the final player(s) roster.

AM I wrong? AH! Don't answer that!?  Woe

I think, more than likely, they are working their international connections to find the last piece.

I looked at the 247 site last night while I was watching the Pacer's game and it seemed like there are some relatively highly rated bigs still available.  I don't know anything about their rating system but it seems like the well is not completely dry.

Not portal or international news, but Dayton has offered a scholarship to Jordan Derkack’s brother, Aidan. He’s a 2026 recruit and a consensus four-star (though three-star on Rivals, ranked 127) 6-5 shooting guard with offers from Villanova, Rutgers, Xavier and Miami (FL), among others. ESPN has him ranked 53 in their Top 100 and 247Sports has him at 68. Don’t know if he has interest in playing alongside his brother.

Baba Miller from Florida Atlantic transfers to Cincinnati.  This is the 6’11” guy that Dayton played against in the NIT.  Florida Atlantic had 4 big guys that I was impressed with.  7’00” Vokietaitis went to Texas, 6’7” Tre Carroll went to Xavier and 6’7” Kaleb Glenn went to Michigan State.  That Florida Atlantic team was loaded with good big guys and they left.

Here is some old news that I just read.

Shawn Phillips, who Dayton offered back on September 14, 2020 at 7’00” 245 has transferred in the portal from Arizona State to Missouri.

He originally committed to North Carolina State then decommitted and went to LSU then to Arizona State and now to Missouri.

If I remember correctly, he attended high school in the Dayton area and then his family moved to Ypsilanti Michigan where he graduated.

He started his high school career at Belmont, then transferred to a school in Michigan, then finished high school in Arizona. He started his college career at LSU, then transferred to Arizona State, and now Missouri - three high schools and three colleges. I guess that's par for the course these days.

You and me both. We need a big man in the worst way. I was hoping we'd get that big guy from Miami. I guess he went to Kentucky. I'd love to know how much they're paying him.

I'm new here and this is my first reply, so please bear with me fellow UD fans! Please tell me we are not done yet in the portal. As others have said, we really need another big and preferably someone who is strong in the paint and showed it last year. I know the portal is pretty picked over, but surely there must still be a few good options. Hopefully?? LHSgolf mentioned that we're still looking for a 4/5 and we should chill. Any updates on that at all?? I like the players we've gotten so far this spring, but one more would be great. Thanks everyone for all the good info on this thread!
