It was August 22, 1901, and Orville and Wilbur Wright were on a train from Kitty Hawk, NC, back to their home on 7 Hawthorn Street in Dayton. The brothers were dejected after further glider testing on the dunes produced more questions than answers. Nothing was making sense and even gracious insight from French-American engineer and aviation authority Octave Chanute -- considered by many the world's foremost authority on aeronautics -- led to few revelations and more bouts of failure. The Wrights were at an impasse: either the challenge of conquering powered flight was beyond their wisdom and they didn't…
A history lesson and A-10 tourney prescription for success — all rolled into one. Where else but UD Pride? Well done, Chris, well done.
Great article. I went to Warped Wing last week and explained to my wife what wing warping actually is. This team has its warts but can make a run. Will they?
The atmospheric conditions may be right. The bracket sets up well for our Flyers. Our temperature has been rising the last 3 halves, which may lead to a hot 3 days.
I do like that AG has used his roster better this year and tinkered with line ups. He knows what his top 10 guys bring, and he’s not afraid to play any of them when necessary. If Jack is healthy, we’ll see 10 guys log minutes. The wins against SLU and VCU were not mere happenstance. This team may now be poised to make a run.
Go Flyers!!
Great read. Chris and I have a running private message about all the crazy things that have happened this year that we did not see coming. The latest is Gene Hackman’s wife passed away first. That never crossed my mind when I first heard of their deaths. And that was just the latest on a long list of surprises in 2025. So I’m not betting against the Flyers winning the tournament. Way too many surprises have happened already that I did not see coming… and it’s only early March. So what the heck…Go Flyers. Shock everyone and win it all.
Loved every bit of this breakdown.
“Play fast but don’t be in a hurry.”
One of THE BEST articles written by anyone ... Flyers were born in Dayton Ohio...
Chris you have been able to weave those brothers histories along with the UD Flyers season so far ... can the UD Flyers capture the imagination of the city and state like the Wrights ...
We will soon find out ... on a wing and a prayer
Go Flyers!
This piece gives Arch a run for his money in the story telling department. Well done, Chris!
Outstanding work!!
A great article, Chris! Equating the improbability of 2 bicycle mechanics from Dayton inventing powered flight to the improbability of a dozen or so basketball players from Dayton winning the A-10 Championship was sheer genius. Kudos, Chris!
If that don’t make ya wanna explode, I don’t know what will. GO FLYERS!
