VCU chatter

There is a ton of chatter on the VCU board about a possible Big East invite. I have no idea if their fans really know something or if it’s just wild speculation. But if it happens, that’s a disaster for the A-10, not to mention a punch in the gut for UD.

They’re also thinking Richard Pitino is a real possibility to sign on as their next coach.

VCU would be a solid get for the Big East. It’s been discussed before as a concern for UD. We better hope they take us, too.

I’m curious why they think Pitino would leave SJU. They might be able to grab his son. I wonder if that is possible.

He must mean Richard. Ain't no way Rick would go to VCU. New Mexico to VCU is the definition of "lateral move." Unless VCU has some serious coin to offer.

VCU getting in the Big East would be an even more absurd outcome than Creighton or Butler was.

Yes, Richard. Thought I’d typed Rich. Fixed it above.

With the trend of conferences getting bigger and bigger, they should add VCU, St Louis, and Dayton. FoxSports might want more content when the new contract is negotiated.

If UConn leaves, correct? With UConn the additions above would make 13 teams.

There's 11 now with UConn, so with UConn 14, without UConn 13.

The BE signed a new 6 year $80 million/yr contract with Fox, TNT, and NBC just last year. I doubt any of the teams would want to split that pie any further with House v. NCAA soon to be settled.

A question: Lets say the ask goes to VCU, UD and SLU.  Would those three add anything extra that Fox, TNT and NBC might pony over a little more?  Could UD afford to pull an SMU and move for free (would only be for 3 or 4 years)?

Contracts can be amended. More inventory gives them something to offer. The biggest issue is going to an imbalanced schedule. The nice thing about 11 teams is playing 20 games with home and home games with all conference members.

yeah 11 is a sweet spot in todays scheduling world. Although 13 gives you a clean 18 game Schedule???

The magic number has moved around. It was 16 teams with 2 - 8 team divisions just a couple of years ago. I have been a fan of 11 teams because it’s balanced. I thought at one point the push was for 18 rather than 20 game conference schedules. If that’s the case, 13 teams is the best approach. If I were the Big East, I go with UD and VCU. Bring in teams within the foot print and have a preexisting rivalry. In the streaming world, it’s eyes watching at home that takes on huge significance. I don’t think SLU does much in that regard.

Conference realignment would be about the only positive going into this off-season.

With that said, would the guys have entered the portal if they knew that was on the horizon?  If we get passed up again for VCU, what does that say about the status of our program?  Passed over for a Xavier equivalent peer.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enough already about the wishin' and hopin' about that golden invite from the B Easy!

We haven't punched above our weight class in how many years?

As far as VCU I would be very surprised they get an invite. The fans over there must have picked up the virus of the B Easy bug from some UD fans when they came to play at the Arena this season.

And I don't want to hear about the up-tick in recruits that would bring us. Anyone know where Butler has been lately? AND the long term malaise that is DePaul?

And what about St John's? If they didn't get the coaching change where would they have been this year? It wasn't the players/recruits it was the arrive of dirty Pitino that turned them around.

I'd be more bent about others vacating the A10 that we actually need in the A10 versus us not getting an ask.

I simply don't want UD to be the last man standing in a dead a*s A10.

This would be a great time for the A10 to start introducing some NIL funding rules: you will either spend X amount of NIL $'s on men's basketball, or you will be asked to leave the conference.

I get it, it's the ACC, but I would question if VCU was getting an invite to the BE, would Odom have left? BE for basketball would be an upgrade over A10 and from all the talk, money for NIL/players wouldn't be an issue. Not saying he wouldn't leave anyway, but just makes it seem like there's nothing imminent for BE for anyone.
