Weaver would have been the 4th best guard with the top three guards from last year being the three senior guards. I'd have to agree that guard play is still a question mark at this point.

Lynn Greer III interview, discusses the
team, the coaches the other players
coming to Dayton. During the interview,
he said he was pitching UD to Efton Reid
at that time he had not decided...
played 1 prep season at IMG Academy
after high school to keep working on
his game...
the freshman have not had 1 minute
of practice yet... but I am still
a half full glass, think we are in good hands

Right and I am optimistic that he and the other freshman will have great careers here as well. The question is at what level they will be able to contribute as freshman.

"Lunardi: If you made a list of programs outside the Power 5/Big East that have the most going for them, I'm not sure second place behind Gonzaga wouldn't be the Dayton Flyers. There's a reason the NCAA continues to hold its First Four event in Dayton. It is a genuine major program in every respect: facilities, access to players, fan base, history and (with one giant asterisk) recent success.
Imagine if the 2020 NCAA tournament had been played. Imagine the No. 1 seed Flyers winning it all with Obi Toppin & Co. Dayton was more than good enough, but with an infrastructure and institutional commitment to sustain that success at a level greater than, say, Loyola Chicago or Butler (each of whom lost their version of Mark Few).
The Flyers get players and, with alum Anthony Grant in charge after flaming out in the SEC, have a likely long-term jockey. Even without an Obi Toppin, I'd buy low on Dayton."

David Jablonski
Brian Roberts watched Dayton practice today. As far as I know, this is the first report of any kind about how the 2021-22 Flyers look this summer.

(Have to read the tweet to see Brian's comments, I couldn't copy them)
Speaking of Brian Roberts, another tweet with link to a story with a video of Brian talking about the 29-2 season

I don’t know much about these guys, but they do a pretty in depth analysis of each team and have the Flyers projected as the most talented team in the league with the most upside.

Weaver - Smith - Elvis - Brea - Greer
Amzil - Blakney - Washington
Zimi - Holmes - Camara
Sissoko - Amaefule
Who from this group will step up on the defense side of the ball?
As of now, I can only see Weaver and Camara as the only possibilities - maybe guys like Holmes and Blakney will step up?

Biggest question for me, is who is going to step up and be the reliable outside threat that this offense needs. 2 seasons ago, UD had 3 players (Crutch, Watson and Obi) all around the 40% mark on a fairly solid number of attempts. PG, Wing, Post really allowed that offense to spread out the defense and prevent teams from packing things inside.
Last year, Ibi remained fairly consistent (though he ran hot/cold thru the course of multiple games IIRC), while Crutch dipped a bit and they lost the contributions that Rodney was able to add on the perimeter for much of the year. Of course, Obi wasn't there either.
amzil, Weaver, Blankney, Zimi and Brea all shot a semi-decent % from 3 land, but all came on relatively low volume attempts. Who is going to step up and become a high volume, high % 3 point threat that the opposing team has to keep a body on to open up lanes for drives (and dishes)?

In watching video of complete games with Holmes, I was impressed with his defense. He is not a super-athletic leaper, but he has great timing and instincts on defense.

You are right that the sample size was too small for all of the players to make a good statistical conclusion. I think we can only go by what we saw last year which makes it much more subjective.
My take based on shooting form is Amzil and Brea were more pure shooters. Blakney seemed middle of the road. Weaver and Zimi were the least solid in their mechanics. I’m sure others will have a different opinion.

Completely forgot about Kobe Elvis transferring in. Sample size on 3 pointers is small, but the % of makes was very good (42%). Throw in Greer, Washington, Holmes and Smith (though I don't like to count on true frosh to be a reliable threat of perimeter scoring) and UD has a lot of different potential players, of varying size that can help keep the lanes open.
If someone had disappeared under a rock in 2020 (and frankly, who wouldn't have liked to have done that?) this roster is completely unrecognizable. I have to imagine the spread between their floor and their ceiling is amongst the largest in college basketball.

Definitely agree about the ceiling; not as much on the floor. With Amzil, Zimi and Camara, I think the floor is a little easier to project. I can't see us being below .500 as a floor even if the pieces don't quite fit this year or if they take a while to gel.
The ceiling is crazy to project. I always base my confidence in the "if" quantity. The more ifs the lower my projection. This team flies in the face of that. There are a ton of ifs... especially in the backcourt. It just seems like the talent level of those ifs is higher than ever and that the probability that all of them not working out is low. Which is a pragmatic way of saying that even if multiple ifs don't work, I still think enough will that we are going to be good. It is more a matter of are we good with several disappointments or are we really good with a ton of depth.

This might not be as profound but it is on point. Weaver and Elvis also played 20 mins/game (like Zimi did). Amzil and Camara averaged 30.
We are extremely young on paper, 11/13 classified as freshman if I count correctly, but this is misleading when you look at raw minutes returning.
30+30+20+20+20 = 120/200 minutes returning (when you include incoming transfers)
Makes you think.

Bucketnight: Did you just say, “multiple ifs”. I love ya’ man! But you go back and read your own post; you have to admit that this post is one of the most zen-like, analytical and almost spiritual blog post of all-time. We, as a group, are clearly showing signs of significant withdrawal pains from lack of college hoops.
I think, I will go back and re-watch the NCAA final four games that I have recorded.

He sure does, Bill. When I interviewed him two years ago Mark told me that unfortunately his busy ESPN schedule keeps him on the road and unable to make it to the Arena to see the Flyers in person.

Mobile Phone/Tickets Training
I look forward to the training sessions UD will have on use of the mobile phone for tickets this year. Hopefully it will be done virtually.

That is a fun read, but I'm uncomfortable with those gushing adjectives throughout the analysis. Our roster heads are big enough without having proved anything. We better hit the ground running because a lot of our seasonal hopes are to be tested early in the slate.
I would hope Maddog would be kind after reading the article.

Will UD Empty Their Own Arena?
by requiring masks at basketball games? I hope not. I do believe UD leadership is bright enough to follow the science.

For tonight's TBT final masks are encouraged for everyone, but not required. Campus, as of yesterday. is requiring masks in classes and communal spaces.
I am happy to wear a mask (and am fully vaccinated) if it means I can attend Dayton BB games.

I got the shot so I wouldn't have to wear the mask. If masks are required, count me out.

How are you going to prove that you got the shot? How do I know that your vax card is not a fake? The UD Arena ticket taker can't be expected to call the local Kroger or Walgreens to verify that you really did get the shot before letting you in.

If you stay away from games because you have to wear a mask, you are NOT a fan. Deal with it for 3 hours. I don't care what the science says either way.

Rollo, I think we have different definitions of what being a fan is. You don't have to have money to be a fan. Just be involved.
I am sorry, I just can't believe that after a year of not being able to see UD play, people would stay home because of a mask. This has nothing to do with my beliefs about masking or not. This is about the experience at UD Arena and what we add as fans.
My fear is that this next round of covid could almost be as bad as the last and they start shutting things down. I know things are better in Ohio right now than they are in Arizona but we have increased our infection rate by 5 times over the last month. UD cannot afford to not have fans in attendance.

So because of the the three people who will bring a fake vax card, we will not believe anyone.

If a woman should be free to have an abortion because it's her body, shouldn't a person be free to refuse a vaccination because it's their body?
But of greater concern (for everyone) should be the seemingly prudent request to limit one's freedom in the public interest. This precedent sets us up
for limitations on our freedoms ad infinitum...all in the public interest.
Marxism, here we come!

When you hear comments about "knowing what the science says," please remember that science is not a set of static facts, especially in the case of a novel virus that we started studying less than two years ago and that keeps changing. I actually kind of like the phrase "follow the science," because it gives you the imagery that our knowledge is a moving, evolving thing. Science is messy. It's about hypothesizing and experimenting and always trying to learn more ... even when that means proving that, oops, what I said last week was wrong. Too many people want immediate answers where they don't exist, and want to call others out for not having them. I hope we let our scientists do what they do -- chase facts, make mistakes, advance our knowledge -- in our effort to solve this problem.

Assuming Delta continues to spread into the season, UD should either require proof of vax at the door or masks for all.

Completely Disagree
Please get sources of information other than liberal Demoncrat. Cases are way up and deaths are way down. Mandated masks will reduce attendance at Flyer games and reduce noise levels. Follow the science and disregard the politics of Demoncrat control of American lives.

Deaths are way down because they lag cases. Hospitalizations are currently rising in many places with increase spread and deaths will likely follow. There are also long term complications many get who survive - long Covid is no joke, I know somebody struggling with it and his ordeal is terrifying.
Look, if it turns out that Delta is "just the flu" that is highly transmissible, then I would be ecstatic to change my tune. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case. I talked to my Dr. who is a specialist in this field yesterday and his take was very different. He said Delta is a "beast" and that prohibiting mask mandates is "just prolonging the pandemic and going to hurt a lot of people." His words as somebody who has spent a ton of time reading the studies and talking with other peer experts, not mine.
This isn't about "liberal Democrats." Look at Arkansas, where the GOP governor just said "oops" on prohibiting mask mandates in schools. Stop getting your information from social media and Google (and God forbid a college basketball message board) and actually talk to your doctors. I don't understand why anybody would trust their doctor to prescribe medicine when they're sick but not trust them on what actions to take during a global pandemic.

FWIW... the school came out today and said vaccinated students will also have to wear masks indoors now.
Many people are still getting the virus, regardless if they have been vaccinated.
Every patient at my daughters work has been vaccinated, yet last week 3 of them caught Covid-19 and died.
NJ just came out and said 49 fully vaccinated residents have died from Covid-19.
So presenting a card at the door is useless... as fully vaccinated people are getting the virus and passing it on as well.
I would also suggest doing some heavy reading on the vaccine and myocarditis, especially if there is a young teen male thinking about getting the vaccine (particularly the mRNA one)... making young male college athletes get the vaccine is really bothersome to me.

Here is the article that Runnin' Rebel referenced.
https://thehill.com/homenews/state-w...ents-have-died
All were over 50 and many had serious pre existing conditions. The deaths are contrary to most of the data that has been previously published. We were always told a certain percentage would get it but most of the reports that I have seen is that 99% of those hospitalized were non vaccinated.
Lots of facts out there. They can't all be correct. Frustrating, no matter what.

2021-22 Non-Conference Schedule
The University of Dayton announced its men's basketball non-conference schedule today, featuring eight home games, three games at the ESPN Events Invitational, and two difficult road games.
The Flyers’ home slate includes Saturday night games on three of the first four weekends of the season.
Not counting the potential opponents in the ESPN Events Invitational (which has an impressive field of Alabama, Belmont, Dayton, Drake, Kansas, Iona, Miami and North Texas), six of the 10 non-conference opponents have at least three starters back from last season. That includes UD’s first three opponents of the year. Northern Illinois and Virginia Tech return all five starters.
Dayton opens the regular season at home against Illinois Chicago on Tuesday, Nov. 9. The Flyers will play three more home games – UMass-Lowell on Saturday, Nov. 13, Lipscomb on Wednesday, Nov. 17 and Austin Peay on Saturday, Nov. 20 – before playing in the ESPN Events Invitational in the HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando.

The problem with anecdotal evidence is it is no better than the anecdotal evidence that runs rampant on the internet that someone’s cousin’s brother got ill from the vaccination. And your NJ reference has no denominator nor time window nor accounts for any age or comorbidities. It’s a number not steeped in any context. Meaningless. There are facts readily available as to the death rate of those who are vaccinated who have either died or gotten seriously ill from Covid. And those facts clearly point out that the vaccinated are statistically very safe from Covid. Not zero, but life never has zero risk.

Yesterday, I noticed on DaytonFlyers.com that the roster page had been altered. The web master had deleted all of the non-active players. Today, I see that the web master has inserted all of the new players. Upon first view, I see that they have listed Daron Holmes at 6’10”, not 6’8”. I found that most interesting. Also, there is no weight for Kobe Elvis.
Personally, I know that I will have to make an effort to remember the spelling of our two guys with the same sounding name. One is Koby and the other is Kobe.

Since you brought up spelling, you might want to check on the correct spelling of DaRon Holmes.

DaRon goes from the 6-8 / 185 they listed him at in the November signing announcement to 6-10 / 220. Just a wee bit of a difference. Greer goes from 6-3 to 6-2. Mali goes from 165 pounds to 170. You always wonder which high schools and colleges are telling the truth about their guys' size.

Well I noticed in one of the videos that I saw earlier that Holmes looked taller than Obi Toppin. I was explaining this away in my mind by thinking that Obi was hunched up and not standing up straight. So, maybe it is true that Homes is 6’10” instead of the advertised 6’8”.

He's taller than Obi but he's not ripped like Obi. A little more time in a professional weight training program and he will be though.

it all depends on how quickly the team can gel
and work together.... with the talent coming in,
the ceiling is quite high.
all of the team is intriguing, I am excited to
hear how Mali and Lynn III are doing through
the practices and as the season progresses..

I have been thinking about the last two years. I remember the ease that Obi had in catching the pass and his success once he had the ball. Then I think about Jordy who was always fighting mightily to get position. Then his struggles to catch the pass. And then his ineffective attempts to do something with the ball once he did get possession. These memories are like day and night in their differences.

Next to his obvious athletic ability, I always thought that Obi had some of best hands I have ever seen in a big man. Jordy indeed struggled with that. In watching some of his video, it seemed like Jordy had a tendency to start his move prior to catching the ball. Obi, on the other hand, would catch anything near him or the rim!

Obi was a forward really, Jordy was a big tank. His ball handling was atrocious except for that one moment where he laid on ground dribbling like a globetrotter. But if you ever find yourself missing Jordy, Sissoko had the same issues.
I really do have faith that Sissoko will improve in that area though as he obviously lacked the experience Jordy had so there's more room for improvement. He also seems more athletic so maybe a hybrid between Obi and Jordy.

My bad -- the past week has just been crazy-busy. Work, travel, family, etc. There will be a Sissoko post, but it might be a couple days still.

No worries. No pressure. You’ve done a marvelous effort on these bios and you’ve only got one more scholarship player left to develop a bio. That is, unless you are going to do a bio on our walk-on who actually got more playing time early in the season last year than some of our scholarship players.

Not to take this thread off the rails, but that is one of the things I love about CAG. He’ll play the guys who’ve gotten with the program over guys with more ability who have yet to buy-in. Sure, it might cost you a few games in the short run. But in the long run, that’s how you build A Program,

I remember Jordy having a great run in the last ten games or so of his career. He was getting it done inside, but the team was struggling.

Yes, he was still a valuable player that seemed to give us better play as his career wound down. However...
1. Nothing he did in those last 10 games reminded anyone of Obi which is kind of what I responding to.
2. Let's hope it doesn't take Sissoko until he has 10 games left in his career before he gets rid of his fumbe-itis.

Athlon Basketball Magazine
Athlon Basketball Magazine
Saw the Athlon basketball magazine today out in Meijers. They are predicting Dayton to finish 6th in the A-10 - too many unknowns.

Projected 6th in A-10 because of "too many unknowns."
Okay so there is no target on our back, which I think is great for a young team. But I know that, no matter what some magazine predicts, none of the coaches of teams supposedly projected ahead of us will take us for granted.
AG will have our young players juiced up (well, maybe not the right word!!!) and ready to play and looking to upset the supposed 5 above.

Yeah, the Flyers have a great recruiting class and great potential from the sophomores on top of that. But there are a lot of unknowns. More so for experts who don't follow the Flyers like we do.
I would bet a huge amount that we finish above 6th. We just have too many players with potential that tells me the only excuse we have is youth and I expect we'll get the most out of what we have because the right combination is there somewhere and CAG will find it through trial and error.
I expect that we will probably be one of the 3 best teams by the time the conference tournament rolls around. We might not be top 3 in standings but we will be playing like such when toward the end of the season.
No matter how it plays out, this is going to be a season like no other and will be fun to watch the players progress.

Smitty, I could not agree with you more.
There is a difference between a player, who is the one and done player, looking out for his own self interest and pro prospects (Power 5 conference players) and the player who loves the game, may have the raw talent eventually for the next level but wants to win, contribute to a winning team and be on a winning team. Maybe Steff Curry is the best example of that.
I think that, through CAG, Dayton gets the second type of player. That's why showing up the magazines and winning conference titles etc., is more fun that having a losing record but the star has a great year and becomes a high draft choice. The star with the big contract is never going to remember Dayton or credit Dayton for his standing but the kids, who contributed on winning teams showing up the "experts," and helped each other, whether they play pro in US or overseas, do remember their contributions, team success and UD.
