21-22 OOC Schedule
The announcement about the exempt tournament inspired me to get this thread going. So far, we know about the return games with Ole Miss and SMU, plus the tournament. So:
Orlando Tourney (N)
Orlando Tourney (N)
Orlando Tourney (N)
@Southern Methodist
@Mississippi
7-8 games left to schedule and/or announce. Unless I'm forgetting something?

https://www.btischeduling.com/
There are a lot of schools on the above scheduling board with ads looking for a game.
And BTW, they are not even validating the required .edu email address anymore required to register on the site and view the scheduling board, anybody can sign up with a fake .edu email address. They recently did a site change and required everybody to re-register, under the old system, the .edu email addresses were being validated iinm. So now, you can just use John.Doe@udayton.edu or something similar as your email, and it will let you in to view the scheduling board as long as you input a .edu email address as your email address.

Ohio State basketball will face Xavier in regular season for first time
https://scarletandgame.com/2021/06/2...5cCOYZNjEkjhpA
"Ohio State basketball fans have wanted more in-state matchups, especially with the premier teams in the state of Ohio. Fans have wanted the Buckeyes to play Dayton, Xavier, and Cincinnati. Ohio State played the Bearcats recently and will now play the Muskateers."
"This is the type of matchup that should happen more often. Ohio State needs to schedule more in-state opponents that are close to their level in terms of skill. It’s good for basketball in Ohio and it’s good for the fans to watch. The players will love it too."

I noticed that Andy Kennedy…former Ol Miss coach is now at UAB. In just his second year, he appears to have built the program back up. They are expected to be a top tier program in C-USA for the next few years.
I always liked Kennedy both at UC and Ol Miss. I think he did us a solid by scheduling UD when at Miss. IIRC the programs played four years when he was there.
I’d like to see UD return the favor and schedule UAB. Not just because Kennedy scheduled UD in years past but also because I think it would be a quality win both on the road and at home.
I’m sure others will disagree by saying we should only play Power 5 + BE schools but sometimes those games are hard to come by and this could be a good match.

Updated with Ole Miss date. SMU could be out of order as there are over 15 days between the opener and Orlando. Could just as easily be played before Orlando as after.

But I am sure people will say we shouldn't schedule UAB because they may not be an at large bid candidate. Q1 and Q2 potential wins only matter if the opponent is also an at large bid candidate per posters on here.
We will see if any more good ooc games are added, it might not happen. The p5/be/aac will not play us in Dayton. That leaves Saint Mary's and BYU and the MW teams and maybe Belmont/Murray State as the only consistent at large candidates that might play us.
So, the question is, are we better off backfilling with buy games or scheduling teams like UAB?

This is my understanding of this whole UD-WSU situation. UIC is a buy game. We will play WSU as long as it is at the UD Arena, same deal as UIC. However, WSU will not agree to that. They want a home and home with the Flyers. UD values its away non conference games and wants to "reserve" them for higher profile teams where national TV is involved. X will not play us PERIOD. I could be wrong, just ask my wife.

Thank you Bill for posting that. Piqua, you should already know this. It has been stated 100 times and I know you are here enough to know that.
As soon as WSU realizes they are at a different level than UD they will be given an opportunity to beat us but it will happen on our floor.

If and when we admit to XU that we are at a "different level" (Power 5/Big East vs. Atlantic 10) XU will allow us to play them at the Cintas Center........is that included your scolding of me John C.?
Yes, I've agreed forever that WSU should play UD on UD's terms to give them their opportunity to validate their program.
John C., I enjoy your input but PLEASE eliminate the scolding!

Totally disagree. X sees NO reason to schedule us. They don't need us. For them The optics of losing to UD are not good. A win doesn't help them either. Maybe things will change if and when we become the Gonzaga of the Midwest, but not before.

If you have agreed all along that the Raiders should accept UD's proposal, why keep addressing UD?. Wouldn't your efforts be better spent addressing WSU? There are really only a couple fans, yourself and ud2, proposing this game on a somewhat regular basis, little interest for it elsewhere. Your proposal for WSU to play at UD is a good one, maybe you can convince the Raiders to do it.

We've come to a point where literally every single thread turns into UD vs. WSU.
I "committed" to UD in 2004. Since that time I have always wondered why we don't play Wright State. I find it incredibly odd that we don't play a school 10 miles away. That's it. That's the extent of my thoughts on the topic after 17 years.

Kind of true, seems like it is hit and miss though as to if they will play us, besides Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and SMU, who else from the SEC and AAC will play us? 3 teams is not enough.
If the Wright State game only is valuable if they are a potential at large/bubble candidate, which they have never been, then do not play at their place, do a buy game only with them.
I just do not like all these extra buy games, call BYU, Belmont, and some of the MW teams, I bet they will play us in Dayton.

The key to becoming the "Gonzaga of the Midwest" is consistency. Over the last basketball generation or so UD has had some good teams, a few very good teams, at least one great team. But we have never demonstrated the consistency that has made Gonzaga "Gonzaga".

Since there was a claim that hardly anyone wants us to play Wright State, I will identify myself as someone who wants us to play Wright State.
We live in a metro area of 800,000 people with exactly two D1 college basketball teams, and they don't play each other. I dislike that.

Myself, as someone who went to both schools, I couldn't care less. When they last played, the series started out highly attended, but was attended like a buy game by the end. Its a big ole "meh" from me.

I am not interested in a home and home series unless it is mutually beneficial for both sides, that is what real rivalries are made of, otherwise it is forced and artificial.
Unless some of the schools from the OVC, HL, and MVC all join the same league, such as the MVC adding WSU, NKU, Murray State, and Belmont, in order to try to become a multi-bid league, thus possibly elevating WSU to an at large contender, I do not see a h/h happening any time soon. Even putting Belmont and MSU into the HL might not be enough to create a multi-bid league.
The HL is too weak to create an at large team, and this isn't 10 years ago where you could try to schedule a tough ooc slate like Butler and then dominate the HL on your way to an at large. 20 game league schedules seem to have closed off that route: can not land enough good ooc games now.

The selection committee/NET calculator people need to place a bigger premium on neutral wins and road wins, that would help ooc scheduling a lot imo. The p5 has a stranglehold on all the at large bids.

Oh boy!
It must be almost halfway through the off season.
That's when the "we should play WSU" themes come out.
From all I have read, they want to be on equal footing as UD and play a H &H series.
Conference opponents get to do H&H rarely does that happen outside Conference.
Unless each has something to gain. Which doesn't seem to be the case for UD.
If WSU can't even get an NIT bid when they miss out on the NCAA tells you ALL U NEED TO KNOW about that match up being on the same playing level.

if NCAA rules permit such a thing,
I would of liked for a UD Wright St
exhibition game each year, with the
proceeds going to a local charity or
cause...
one year, the tornado families affected..
another year, families of the shootings,
things like that... make it for a greater
cause.
something like that, if allowed,
could be a good thing.

I know I shouldn't respond, but it's 2 am so here goes.
1) My base argument is that UD should play WSU in some form no matter what, on principle. All at UD? Cool. ... Alternating years hosting? Cool. ... Charity game on a temporary court floating in the river? Cool. ... Most of you disagree? Cool.
2) Re: WSU "can't even get an NIT bid" and that's all you need to know ... Look, UD's a stronger program than WSU. But it's not like Grant's UD and Nagy's WSU have been in different stratospheres on the court (other than 19-20).
If you include the "what would have happened in 2020" data, both schools have qualified for 1 NCAA and 2 NITs in the past four years.
WSU would actually be ahead if NIT bids were all about quality. UD got an NIT bid this past year and WSU didn't despite the fact that WSU was higher in both NET (75-90) and KenPom (73-87).
You think I should stop responding to internet arguments at 2 am? Cool. ... Me too.

I like this yearly thread with the schedule updates.
Is it too late to suggest a separate Wright State thread, so as to not pollute this one anymore than it already has been?

Slightly OT, Richmond just inked a home and home with Drake. Big series, especially this year as I believe Drake returns almost every single player from last year.

Drake is also playing St Louis in Las Vegas on 12/22.
Richmond also going to Northern Iowa in Dec. Which is a return game of a home and home.
The Valley is going to be very strong this year with returning players and some big transfers. Valpo got 3 from Wisc and 1 from Mich St.
Drake, Loyola, UNI and Missouri St could all be top 25 teams at some point. SIU, Bradley, Indiana St and Valpo all have some good pieces as well.
We have a chance to play Drake in Orlando.
Dayton needs to see if they can get in on the home and home action with a Loyola, Mo St or UNI -- maybe even Bradley who should be pretty good.

Richmond ooc schedule highlights, I'd take it in a heartbeat, 7 pretty good games, 16 away/neutral:
Utah State neutral site
Maryland neutral
Louisville neutral
Mississippi State neutral
At Northern Iowa
NC State neutral
At Drake

The arena has the latest technology in HVAC now, henceforth other non-sport income streams are booked and continue to be booked. With the venue being a true b-ball venue and not multi-purposed, does limit some marketing efforts. Soooooo, going forward men’s b-ball scheduling philosophy due to having to carry the financial burden of all UD athletics will be interesting. It’s all on the marketing of the arena.

That's only 2 more than what we have now, might be the only way to get a good number of ooc games going forward, we will see if any good games get added to our ooc schedule...seems there is definitely a limit on how many good teams are willing to play in Dayton or at any A10 school for that matter, might have to be more willing to be more flexible with the scheduling philosophy

Yes, my mistake, 4 team event in the Bahamas, 2 games, vs. Maryland and then either Louisville or Mississippi State.

Everybody else in the A10 is in the same boat, basketball pays for everything, yet they make it work with less home games.

Not true. I want to say I read where VCU gets between 50-70% of their money from student fees. All the other state schools in the A10 also take a large percentage of their budget from student fees. Also, nobody in the A10 has the budget UD does. I believe even VCU is 1mil less than UD.

Only 2 games?? We have been over this before. If you are willing to step up and donate the $250,000 to take the place of these two games, then propose it.
That is very inaccurate. Outside of UD, VCU, and St Louis no team has a yearly attendance average over 6,000. If you only average 6,000 or less, the $75-100,000 for a road game becomes a wash or better.

Securing a home and home with a team that finished 3rd in the ACC that again looks poised to make the tourney is quite the accomplishment. Kudos.
Here's a quick preview from https://howtheyplay.com/team-sports/...etball-Preview
VIRGINIA TECH
2020-2021: 15-7, 9-4 in the ACC (3rd); lost to Florida in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament
Expected Departures: Tyrece Radford (12.2 ppg., 5.9 rpg.) entered the transfer portal; Joe Bamisile transferred to George Washington and Jalen Cone (9.2 ppg., 34.9% 3pt.) transferred to Northern Arizona; Wabissa Bede is a senior that is not expected to return; Cartier Diarra (7.5 ppg.), and Cordell Pemsl are seniors that will not return
Major Additions: 6-0 Wofford transfer Storm Murphy and 6-10 Clemson transfer Lynn Kidd
Current Outlook: A second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance
Mike Young’s Hokies exceeded expectations once again in his second season, finishing third in the ACC and winning Coach of the Year honors for Young along the way. While the season did end in disappointment with a first round loss in the NCAA Tournament, Virginia Tech appeared to be in position to contend for a conference title before Tyrece Radford's shocking last minute transfer decision significantly impacted their outlook for the upcoming season.

The key is to find “cupcakes” that Neil expects to over-perform. Perennial doormats hurt the NCAA resume.

Then make some budget cuts...the word on here is always that men's basketball gets all the resources it needs, it sounds like we are taking needed $ away from men's basketball, so our ooc schedule suffers as a result.
Even if we do not get $ from student fees, we are still averaging double the attendance than everybody else in the A10 is averaging, that should more than make up for getting no student fees.

Or just increase ticket prices slightly to cover the shortfall, phase it in over 1-3 years, and nobody even notices.
And they aren't getting $75-$100k for a road game, those are h/h series, they get $0.

Sullivan discussed scheduling on a recent zoom call. He stated that he hopes to schedule another game or two with p5 schools, late based on something falling through on their schedule and needing to pick up a game.

That's easy for you to say. You're not a season ticket holder. It's easy for you to spend other people's money. The Seat License Fees went up quite a bit just a couple years ago.

So make budget cuts to other sports and other areas of the athletic department because you and pretty much only you is unhappy with our Non-Conference schedule and UD's philosophy? For like the 100th time, our Non-con is not what has kept us out of the NCAA tourney, it has always been our mediocre play in the A10. Name 1 year when our non-conference schedule was the reason we didn't make it into the tournament?
EDIT: Don't get me wrong there has definitely been years I have thought our schedule was weak, but even in those years it didn't keep us from making the tournament. Some of those years were not UD's fault, other teams did not perform as expected for various reasons. but there have definitely been years UD's schedule has been a dud. After learning everything that goes into scheduling from Neil's interview on UDPride, I understand that it is harder than people like you want to admit it is to schedule.

I have a crazy wild hunch (my gut- no inside info) we will still start one more home and home with a decent opponent, at home of course. Yes, I know what our scheduling model has been in the past.
Then bring on the strategically picked cupcakes.

We just spent $72,000,000 on MBB/WBB. They don't need to take additional money from UD Rowing.

Another example of Dayton's fan base influence. SLU is a peer school by every measure. Same ballpark in terms of facilities, reach, expectations etc. But barring some unforeseen scheduling calamity, Dayton would never play in the Cancun exempt tournament with that type of field. Nevvah. We see ourselves as a Tier-1 tourney exclusive just like Michigan State or Villanova and are treated as such. There aint that many programs swimming in this pond. Even some large Power-5 state schools gotta sometimes play in these Pago Pago Shootouts.

It's pretty simple, actually. In addition to our on court performance/history, which is almost always competitive and quality (Top 75ish and better), our fans travel and show up. This is the biggest component that SLU is lacking, in addition to any NCAAt run(s) in the last 30+ years.

UD playing Miami in the 1st Game in Orlando
Based off this, we would either play Kansas or North Texas in Game 2

UD vs. Miami would get much more interesting if they land Jalen Duren. I'm not enough of a recruiting follower to know where that stands at the moment.

He’s a 2022 recruit so it really doesn’t matter for this upcoming season.

So, it appears UD is considered the 4th or 5th seed? Unless Alabama is 1st seed which would make Drake/Belmont 4/5?
Drake is probably 3rd, Miami 4th, UD 5th, Belmont 6th if I were to guess.
Always important to win that first game. I’d be happy with win over Miami, loss (close) to Kansas, and win over Drake. Obviously, want to win the whole enchilada…

Miami's been poor in the ACC the past two years, but they look like an interesting team for 21-22. Wong and McGusty are back, plus Charlie Moore (DePaul) and Jordan Miller (GMason) transferred in, giving them players who averaged 17-16-14-13 ppg last year (granted, all for mediocre or worse teams). They've got seven contributors who will be in at least their third college season, and their incoming freshman class was ranked roughly the same as ours. It's hard to know how quickly teams will gel in the transfer era, but this could be an interesting matchup.

This is probably the best possible pairing we could imagine. Win or lose we are guaranteed a game with Kansas or a very good North Texas team. Needing to win the first one doesn't necessarily apply here. Winning 2/3 is what matters in these tournaments and more importantly 2/3 against quality foes. We are guaranteed two of them now and if we do our part will see a third.
No idea what ends up happening with this young squad but whatever negative outcomes await will not be blamed on OOC SOS.

I think the Non-Con is perfect… Team gets 4 games (5 if you include the exhibition game) to gel and figure out the rotation before Orlando.
Tough Tourney
Then 3 very good OOC opponents right before we open A10 play
The “buy” games are fine

I hope you're right. We would be in really, really good shape heading into A10 play.
