wow, wonder what he's looking for. This past season would've been his senior year had he not transferred. And he's got 2 years of eligibility left. Wonder if he's looking to move up or down when it comes to programs/conference.

I hope he succeeds, wherever he winds-up. He was a good soldier for us for 2 seasons, with some definite skills to succeed at the right level, in the right situation.

Jordan had a really strong freshman year. I thought he was really going to have a great four years as a Flyer. He tailed off his sophomore year in a pretty big way. These multiple transfers generally do not work out well. I wish him the best.

He led the Blue Raiders with 10 ppg, but he only shot 37% from the field and 27% from beyond the arc. It's too bad he's leaving as he was a major contributor.

I don't think anyone is lamenting his transfer. Instead, to me, it's surprising to see him transfer at this point. His numbers don't seem to suggest that he'll go up the food chain. Maybe he wants to be closer to home or he has academic interests that can't be met at Middle Tennessee. Regardless, I would think that Flyers Fans would wish him well.

He sounds like some of the AAU basketball parents. Thus the reason many good women and men no longer coach, or referee, AAU ball.
Pathetic the way people can act.

I wonder if the extra year of eligibility is going to increase the number of transfers. Makes me think the extra year should have been contingent on staying at current school.

Word on the street is that assistant coach Tony Bergeron, who goes out with Tre's mom and has been like his personal handler, is getting fired, so that's probably why he is leaving.

Talk to Hyde Park Flyer- he noted Davis’ “leadership”. I merely commented on the quality of said leadership.

You reap what you sow at UMass. Half of the roster is comprised of the Woodstock Academy pipeline developed under Bergeron...then Bergeron gets hired by McCall to the UMass staff (or is it vice versa???). Remember when Bergeron got into the verbal altercation last year with Jacob Toppin (then at URI) because he felt Jacob pivoted on a commitment to Bergeron. What IS interesting is that Mitchell also came from Woodstock. It's doubtful the story is over at UMass. Five more on the roster from Woodstock if in fact Bergeron is fired.

He didn't talk about Davis' "leadership." He simply mentioned that he led the team in scoring. You then felt compelled to trash the kid - again.

In Maddog's world, if you lead your team in scoring, and your team loses, it's your fault. I guess in his world, if leading your team in scoring isn't enough to win, you should try to score less.

I used the exact same word he used — led. Now led and leadership are separate? Perhaps in your mind. Seems you also equate scoring with winning. Perhaps if Davis took better shots and didn't shoot a dismal 27% from three and had the lowest fg % among starters they might have won a few games.

he did lead the Flyers in 3pt shooting on year,
right? just sayin..... in fact, he did win a couple
games for us...
so the bottom line here is,
wish him well,
he is no longer here
that is what maddog is unable to do,
that's the main point here as I can tell.

"Led in scoring" and "leadership" can and usually are mutually exclusive. Leadership is normally provided by Coaches, who score zero. Led in scoring is one statistic and isn't necessarily any more important than "Led in rebouding" or "Led in assists".
"Leadership" is a noun. "Led" is a verb.
"The horse led the race from start to finish. This means the horse showed great leadership." Now do you see how ridiculous you sound? Don't answer that, I already know the answer.

Four Penn State players in the transfer portal this morning:
- Myreon Jones: 15.3 PPG
- Izaiah Brockington: 12.6 PPG
- John Harrar: 8.8 PPG, 8.8 RPG
- Trent Buttrick: 3.0 PPG
@OnwardState
·

@PennStateMBB
guard Jamari Wheeler has also reportedly entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports.
Wheeler and Jones were guys recruited out of high school. Wheeler was a Duquesne commit under Ferry who got released when he got fired. Had a nice career at State Penn

I am convinced that transfers will become even more prolific. Players today jump High Schools and AAU teams regularly. I expect 2 to 3 translates a year even from our beloved Flyers.

Possibly. But then, the only players who’ve transferred out since CAG became Head Coach 4 years ago were recruited during the Miller era, so it’s also possible that no one leaves (as unlikely as that may be).

If players aren't going to have to sit out a year we need to quit calling them transfers and call them what they really are, mercenaries.

If a senior comes back for an additional year, that may impact a transfer's decision. Hopefully our four soon say they are leaving. Or I should say three, as Crutcher is a foregone conclusion.

This has to be the case. It would be pretty weird to announce your intention to transfer prior to your final game.
I wouldn't surprised to see a few leave. Although given the fact that this is essentially a free year for everybody maybe nobody leaves.

The fact that we’re still making offers to 2021 kids leads me to believe we have a couple who will transfer out. It’s just the way of the world now.

Indeed and keep in mind the parents/mentors of the ones who are thinking of transferring have been and continue to speak with other teams in search of a "better" fit/opportunity. Time will tell.

a program is really a bad offseason or a coach change now from potentially a major rebuild
Seems like stability and a coach who can build a good relationship with his players is at a premium
Brannen at UC unless he does major work on the recruiting front this spring is probably finished off this offseason. UC is back into a full fledged rebuild

6’6” 215 is just 10lbs more than Weaver who is lanky. By way of comparison Charles Little was 6’6 and beefy at 247.
This guy would seem to fall into competition with Amzil, Zim, Blakney Holmes and Washington for minutes at forward. Not a good shooter 32% from 3, 38.5 overall. Wouldn’t we be better served with guards that can score or a post player?

Would love to get Kolek. The kid can shoot the rock. Probably can’t transfer to an A10 school.

Lhsgolf19: If Fatts Russell joined the transfer portal that would be very weird. Why would he want to play another year in college? I considered him destined to make good money in Europe. At his size, I don’t think another year in college would make him an NBA prospect no matter how well he has played.

Lhsgolf19: Wow, if he wants another year in school, can he join the Dayton team? I remember that Dayton got a transfer from Richmond a few years ago. Fatts would be a great mentor to Malachi Smith.

Now this would be a Donald Smith and Johnny Davis scenario. But, why does he want to leave Rhode Island? I guess that is his own personal reasons. Grant will clearly ask that question.

Andres Sandoval left Richmond and attended a junior college I believe before coming to Dayton. He was unable to transfer directly.

That rule may or may not be in place still, but I don't see why CAG would want Fatts for 1 year. He plays hard and is a good defender, but his shooting is lousy. Doesn't seem like a good fit for 1 season. I want Malachi to play like Scooch, not Fatts.

I don't consider it leaving RI. This is a weird situation. This was to be Fats last season with RI without the COVID free year added. He looks at it as a free year to hopefully wind up on a P5 team that needs him for one season. I look at it kind of same way as Crutcher. He cold stay at Dayton but wants to move up to the next level which is pro. Fats could stay at RI but wants to move up to next level which could be the Big Ten or some conference like that.
Of course the way I look at it, he would never wind up at Dayton and will only go to a conference that is considered above the A10.

I totally agree. What's crazy is Fatts is easily fixable, but he and his coaches have never made it happen. If he just stopped shooting so much, he could be a great asset.
He's a very good perimeter defender, and on offense, he can beat his man into the lane regularly and draw fouls (where he shoots 80% FT). His turnover rate isn't bad either. If he was a pass-first, drive-and-dish point guard, he'd be excellent.
Instead, he takes 12-15 shots a game (a bunch of them 3s). And he was a bad shooter before, but 33% FG and 23% from 3 this year were just awful.

Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio thinks that Fatts would be a very good fit at UK. Jacob Toppin, who is coming back, would be a good resource for recommending UK to Fatts. Devin Askew and Davion Mintz are probably returning so Fatts will probably pick a program that needs a starting PG so that he can play the majority of the minutes!

They have had a morale issue at URI for Fatt's whole tenure. There definitely is a correlation there for all the reasons mentioned. He is not a team guy. He rarely has ever seen a shot he didn't like.

I agree they have had cohesion issues and Fatts was probably the reason for most of it, but he has stayed loyal to David Cox, and that probably led to the many transfers they have had over the last few years.
My guess is Fatts is looking for a blue blood that may want him, if there aren't any than he will probably go to Europe. UConn (although I don't consider them a blue blood, but some do because of the four titles) is probably a strong possibility because of Hurley.

Fatts got his degree from URI and fulfilled every sensible obligation asked of him. I have no problem with him moving on even with the mulligan in his back pocket.
Fatts was an enigma at times. As he went, URI usually followed and his one major crutch was inconsistency -- he was either hot as tamales or cold as ice and those streaks would usually last 6-8 games. He could play like the best player in the league...or pretty F'n far from it. For an undersized guard lacking great physical strength however, he was a good player that probably played beyond his physical footprint. Most guards his size are playing in the MAAC or Patriot. As for URI being better without him however, not convinced. Be careful what you wish for. URI was not uber talented to begin with.

He’s more than overrated. He shot 30% from the field and 20% from the three. He wouldn’t play a lick on the Flyers team.

predictable under achievement
From the start, URI had to overcome the inconsistency of Fatts and the melding of all these transfers. It was a psychological nightmare for team unity, with the player who is expected to lead it being the most unstable of all. Who does this?
Key Returning Players:
Fatts Russell, Senior, Guard, 18.8 ppg
Jermaine Harris, Junior, Forward, 5.3 ppg
Antwan Walker, Junior, Forward, 5.3 ppg
Key New Players:
Tres Berry, Freshman, Guard
Allen Betrand, Junior, Guard, Transfer from Towson, pending waiver
Jalen Carey, Sophomore, Guard, Transfer from Syracuse, pending waiver
D.J. Johnson, Junior, Forward, Transfer from Junior College
Ishmael Leggett, Freshman, Guard
Malik Martin, Junior, Guard, Transfer from Charlotte, pending waiver
Makhel Mitchell, Sophomore, Center, Transfer from Maryland, pending waiver
Makhi Mitchell, Sophomore, Center, Transfer from Maryland, pending waiver
Jeremy Sheppard, Senior, Guard, Transfer from Junior College

Thought at first he was big 2 guard. I see hes listedxas a forward. Yeah missed the poor shooting numbers.
Still 10 and 5 as a sophomore isnt shabby. Not sure AG coaching can get his shooting numbers up.
Sure there are plenty options out there. Weird he shoots 80% from line!

He shot 39% as a freshman from 3. Not sure what happened this year. Did have 31 against Maryland at the end of the year

I make fun of Fatts as much as the next guy, but this is a silly take. The guy plays great defense and is good at drawing fouls. He'd play for Dayton. I still think he's hugely overrated given that he's a volume shooter who can't shoot and gets a lot of his points when the game is out of hand.

6’8, 190 and does almost all his work near the basket. That might work against the little sisters of the poor — which are the only teams he’s played against but it is highly unlikely to work at our level. He is a poor shooter from 3 and takes few. He is a bad ft shooter at just 54%. I can’t see him
Beating out Zimi, Blakney, Amzil or either of the new kids despite his age and experience and the fact that our kids are hardly superstars yet. This looks like a hard pass to me.

5th year?
Wasn’t there talk of him being drafted by the NBA after his freshman year?

Davidson, a Liberal Arts school just north of Charlotte, doesn’t have graduate programs and Grady is on schedule to graduate this spring. It would be a complicated process for him to return to Davidson next season.

At the risk of asking something stupid about eligibility, if he wanted to stay at Davidson can he just add more undergrad classes working toward a double major?

Call me crazy, lord knows I have been called much worse just today.
I would not be surprised to see Jalen Crutcher enter the transfer portal, at least to test the waters a bit.
Still a lot of Covid uncertainty oversees as to who will or will not be allowed to travel and what might be opened up by October when basketball starts to ramp back up again if Jalen wanted to play overseas.
What will Jalens NBA chances be come draft time?
Does any elite level program who is a yearly guarantee to be dancing need a top level point guard for next year? Does Jalen forego going overseas if the NBA is not in the cards in order to pursue every kids dream of playing in a final 4?

I would expect that Jalen is at least a prime candidate for NBA's developmental league. But lord, my biggest fear is that he does go into the portal, then 3 years from now finds himself on an NBA roster as "Jalen Crutcher out of Duke University". That would suck.

Crutches can make very good money in Europe. I would be very surprised if he does not go pro.

I believe we had some debate in a thread that went on too long about the possibility of having all 3 Flyer guards being drafted. Talk about hallucinating. wow.

I don't recall anybody suggesting that all three could be drafted. There was plenty of momentum for Crutch and then there was a lot of people expecting Ibi to make a major splash in the A10 this year. Didn't happen. Too many holes in his game (defense, physical play, loose handle).

I agree with all 3 of your negatives.
But his numbers were very good:
37 minutes a game.
46% fg
42% 3's
76% fts
4 rbds
That's a least a small splash. Before the season started, I would have taken those numbers.
It's the physical part of the game we needed from Ibi, and a few others, where everyone fell short.

I doubt he’s looking to make ~$24k per yearning the d league, but some will take it hoping to get call up to the NBA. Jalen probably knows he is not an NBA level
Player. His best option would seem to be internationally. He can probably get a $100k opportunity, have few expenses and after 10 years have a million dollar nest egg to support himself while he gets into coaching or some other line of work. Why waste a year in school and burn one of his earning years?
