Smile MSOC: Dayton Blanks Oakland 3-0

The Dayton Flyers men’s soccer team stepped out of A10 play on Tuesday night for a rare October non-con matchup as UD hosted Horizon League foe Oakland. The Flyers defeated the Golden Grizzlies 3-0 to bounce back to .500 on the season at 7-7-0 (2-2-0). Two first half goals and an insurance goal late in the match were the difference as Oakland falls to 6-5-2 (4-0-1).

Cool temperatures and a slight breeze made for typical autumn conditions as both sides kicked off under the lights. Oakland opened the match with a couple strong minutes as they pushed forward with numbers through the midfield, but it was UD that struck first on a terrific counter-attack in the 6th minute along the right flank. Elias Harryson fed Jonas Fjeldberg running free into open space behind the Grizz back line. His cross to the center of the box found Toluwalese Oladeinbo filling in centrally without a mark and nothing but an open net for the easy tap-in. Up 1-0 early, the Flyers were exactly where they wanted to be to start the match.

Fjeldberg almost made it 2-0 just moments later with a one-time half-volley at the far post, but the ball was blocked on the goal line and resulted in a Flyer corner kick that was eventually turned away.

Oladeinbo almost finished a header at the far right post later in the first half on an excellent Dayton cross from the left baseline. The header was saved at the post by Grizz GK Liam McQueenie to keep the score 1-0, but the Flyers were applying consistent pressure in the offensive half of the field that forced Oakland to defend with numbers in the box.

Another great sequence led to Dayton’s second goal of the half in the 42nd minute as Adjei pressured along the right touch line and fed a cross to Oladeinbo inside the box. Oladeinbo dummied the ball and let it pass behind him to Andy Sanchez unmarked in the box for the slotted shot into the net for the 2-0 lead that Dayton would protect into intermission. It was Sanchez’ first goal of the season.

The Flyers dominated the run of play in the first 45 minutes by a 60/40 margin and were much better at utilizing the full width of the field, oftentimes playing long weak-side balls out of the back to forwards lurking with excess space to collect and dribble-drive thereafter.

Halftime stats favored UD in shots 11-3 while corner kicks were 7-3. More importantly, shots on goal were 7-0 as GK Federico Barrios didn’t have a lot to do in his goal box other than play balls from his feet for distribution out wide.

The second half restart lacked some of the wide open play that dominated the first 45 minutes. Oakland tightened up on their marks and gave the Flyers less space to complete consecutive passes to move the ball forward with consistency. The pressure led to some better Oakland offense as well – not necessarily quality shots on goal but more possession to turn the run of play around and counter with numbers.

The match turned more physical as well, much of that a result of less room for either team to make progress into the opposing goal boxes. Oakland paid the price for this in the 69th minute when Adam Giorgio earned his second yellow card of the match and got sent off the field to put the Golden Grizzlies down a man for the last 20 minutes.

Dayton took advantage in the 80th minute when Adjei slotted a perfectly-weighted pass through the OU back line as Fjeldberg timed his run and got beyond the last defender. From there, Fjeldberg dribbled into the box, showed patience by allowing the Grizz goalkeeper to open up the goal mouth, then slotted a ball to the open net for the 3-0 lead. Dayton salted the remaining 10 minutes away to preserve the well-earned shutout.

Overalls shots were 18-9 while shots on goal were 10-3. Corner kicks were 8-7 in favor of Oakland. The last 45 minutes were much more competitive, but most of the damage occurred before halftime and Oakland looked and felt like they reconciled the writing on the wall even with their improved play in the latter stages.

Adjei, Oladeinbo, and Fjeldberg have turned into a dangerous threesome in the Flyer offense, oftentimes sharing goals and assists among themselves as the mids and fullbacks take care of the rest to keep the score down. Even in the recent three-game losing streak, Dayton showed good form and outplayed their opponents for much of those contests. Back to winning ways in the last two games, UD is playing well at the right time and could prove dangerous in the A10 tournament if they take care of business over the last two weeks of the regular season.

Dayton jumps back in A10 play with a road match at league-leading Saint Louis (5-0-0 in conference play) on Saturday night. Kickoff is 8pm EDT. It’s a huge match and good measuring stick for the Flyers to gauge their progress over the last few weeks. UD has been unlucky in a few matches this year and deserves some friendly bounces. While Dayton is 7-7-0, they could easily be 10-4-0. At times of late, they have been playing like a team capable of beating anyone in the league.
